    5 Things I did right: I said "Yes!" to every event at school or that I was invited to; I called home often; I learned to cook Japanese food; I explored my town in Japan; I didn't speak Japanese at school, and
    7 things I regret: Not making an effort to learn staff and students names; Not introducing yourself to the staff at your school; Using the THUMBS DOWN gesture in class with students; I spoke to fast with students and staff in the beginning; I had a boring self-introduction; I brought clothes that were not a good material choice for Japan; I didn't have a savings plan; I didn't have a study plan.

      You can do it! Just get that 4 year degree, However, if you wanna be a teacher, I recommend getting your masters in something like linguistics or teaching and coming to teach at a univerisity here. Those programs usually include everything jet has, plus free on-campus housing. But you must have an "english" related masters.

    Hey, love the video!
    I'm learning as much Japanese as I can right now, and I hope to apply for the JET program for next year. If I have a conversational level of Japanese when I get there, should I still try to avoid using Japanese in the classroom?

    • @ADreamInJapan
      @ADreamInJapan  Рік тому

      Absolutely. Save your Japanese for your everyday life and conversation with teachers who are not English teachers. If students know you can speak, they are less likely to try their English, ESPECIALLY in the beginning. As time goes on you can use little bits here and there. But I highly recommend that with students and English teachers, you use English, even if Japanese would be easier. You are here to expose them and give them practice. Good luck on the app! You'll have plenty of chances to talk in Japanese outside of work if you try! Joining local clubs, going to bars, and travel are awesome places to improve your Japanese.

      Thanks! Don’t let not being able to do JET stop you from coming to Japan! There are other programs, albeit they don’t have the after career support JET has, that don’t care about age! Not to mention if you have other skills or experience you might be able to teach here ( post corona, everything is a bit of mess now) !

    • @ADreamInJapan
      @ADreamInJapan  2 роки тому

      I’m working on this! It’s hard tho. I’m trying to transfer old data to a new computer without PowerPoint haha. But as for projector, the school computer I had had both VGA pin connector and HDMI connector depending on the projector. In later years my school actually got appleTVs so for some things I could project over wireless using school iPads or my phone. This was really fun as kids could project presentations as well.
      I also had an old MacBook which I bought a VGA/ HDMI adapter for so I could use it at my away schools on the old VGA projectors. But I did invest in that myself.

    For non city Jets how much do you think is possible to save within the four years?

    • @ADreamInJapan
      @ADreamInJapan  2 роки тому

      Hi Night Music! Thanks for watching! If you are a single person, and generally frugal ( meaning like you...cook for yourself most of the time, you don't go crazy buying furnishings after initial set up, and you don't take big trips) you can EASILY save $700 to $1000 USD ( roughly ¥100,000) a month. I know people who managed to save more a month because they had next to nothing for rent and didn't do very much outside work though) I was able to save around that every month and still went out to eat about once a week, bought lunch at school (¥350 a day) and did some decent traveling. I only seriously saved my last 2 years. I did have a car which made travel easier and relatively cheaper if carpooling than trains. If you started saving right from the start, you could easily amass close to $40,000 or more in 4 years! I hope that helps! DO NOTE, that this is highly dependent on your base rent. But besides that, you can do it!!

      Hi! I got married after JET, so answering won't help you, but I knew many married people that came over together on JET. They tend to be placed more rurally (if only one spouse is working on JET which would be my recommended path, if both of you apply and get accepted iand accept placements t is fairly unlikely to be in the same town or even prefecture. ) Please watch my start-up cost videos for more info about bringing spouces!
