ep 2 literally mentions Gyokuyou as "bright and gentle, but also wise and cautious", what appears to be scheming probably just her being cautious. She is that cautious to the point she only has a few ladies-in-waiting that she really trusts. Compare to other high concubines that we have seen (Lihua, Lishu, Ah Duo), Gyokuyo has too few ladies-in-waiting. For her, Mao Mao is like an outsider and she knew poisons, who knew if she can be a threat. They tried to poison Gyokuyo before, the rear palace is full of enemies, like all the jealous women around, esp Gyokuyo is being favored by current emperor.
I think what makes me see she being "evil" as impossible is the ladies-in-waiting she carefully chose to have around her. I don't think she would be able to have schemes behind even their back so they would have to be the best actresses in the land 😭
Back then they hadn't figured out what allergies were yet, maomao said "can't eat" because during that time period people really did just think that people were being picky eaters. Lishu's ladies in waiting thought she was being picky and intentionally gave her fish to bully her, not knowing that she was actually allergic to it. That's why her (Lishu's) food taster got so pale when maomao said it's the same as poisoning her because if they kept doing it could/would become deadly and she would die.
The palace cooks ARE aware of Lishu's problem with fish. Her version of the dish replaced the mackarel with jellyfish strips. The problem is her poison tester switched her dish with Lady Gyokuyou's to bully her, so Lishu got Gyokuyou's dish instead. And Gyokuyou got Lishu's. Which turned out to be a good thing, because Maomao detected the poison on "Gyokuyou's" soup bowl. Bullying her ended up saving Lishu's life. Had her poison tester not bullied her? ~12:50 I think Lishu's attendants think she's a picky eater. She's younger than them, and they seem to think she's just a spoiled princess. So seem to mess with her because of a bit of power, and also the fact that her getting upset seems to reinforce them thinking she's being a brat rather than getting sick. Her taster probably swapped things in thinking she hates it since she refused to have it and told the cooks not to prepare it. And once its in front of her, she can't do anything since the Emperor is right there. Which is trash. Her ladies in waiting suck, but they are probably in a weird position that they get the prestige of their job along with probably an ability to push-around the source of that job. Which ain't great for Lishu in this siutation. Kind of an extra on her issue is since she's one of the prior Emperor's consorts she's legally a widow, so apparently that also means she's not as valued about. Which I dunno, says something the Emperor keeps her as high a status of she is still even if he ain't going to do anything with her. Which, mind probably also feeds into her ladies in waiting being pissed as it means they're kind of in a position of having no chance of serving an Empress.
There’s also a third reason for their resentment that’s shown in the manga; the fact that she wasn’t able to “fulfill her duties” as a wife both with the previous emperor (who died before he could….ugh) and with the current emperor (because he’s not trash and likes big bosomed ladies)….so in the court’s eyes consort Lishu has the least pull with the emperor and therefore the least political pull. She KNEW that they were bulling the child and the child is afraid to say anything...****edit** I see you got there @12:53....yes....lady in waiting did not know the child was allergic to fish....people being allergic to things didn't seem like common knowledge to me. Which is why they just thought she was being picky. They literally said, "it's not poison, it not gonna kill you" earlier in that last episode when they were feeding her something else, not sure if y'all missed that or not
I'm glad they brought us back around to the switched bowls cuz not me not even realizing someone tried to poison Lishu 😭 this girl has been through too much. Like, bad enough being some old man's concubine at 9, her own maids think she's spoiled and someone's tryna kill her
To sum up: Last episode right at the start the Lishu's ladies-in-waiting were gossiping about how she was 'picky' about food. The dish prepared for her at the garden party specifically didn't have any fish. The taster swapped it because she figures Lishu is just being a picky child and doesn't like fish, and knows that once a dish is served in the presence of the Emperor, it cannot be refused. Lishu's expression on seeing there was fish clearly shows that she knows it makes her sick. Allergies aren't really known of as a specific thing at this time, which is why Maomao explains it like she does. She knows the taster was messing around figuring the 'no fish' thing was just Lishu being a picky child, just like all her ladies-in-waiting have said last episode and this. Maomao made sure the taster knew that it was a deadly serious thing and what to be careful of in future. The only effect on the poison was that Gyokuyou got the meal items intended for Lishu. A minister tried the poisoned soup after Maomao left and collapsed, and there was the sound of a dish breaking which might have been the poisoned soup bowl (to hide evidence) but the bowl was silver, so wouldn't have broken.
I went back to check, and it could be a red herring, but I think the shadowy silhouette we saw at the end of episode 5 was Concubine Lishu's taste tester. Again, it's possible they are trying throw us off the trail, but given how the hairstyle seemed too plain compared to the hyper intricate updo Concubine Gyokyuou is wearing at the time it would be inconsistent.
12:49 I don't think the food taster knew about Lady Lishu allergies. Her ladies in wainting bully her, so the food taster switch her food (no fish) with Lady's Gyokyou (with fish) to mess with her, because they think she is spoiled and a picky eater and she couldn't refuse it in front of the emperor.
In general, the food in garden party has fish except Lishu's. Lishu's ladies-in-waiting want to bully Lishu for being like a spoiled kid (also, they don't think highly of her). They want to bully her for being picky eater. Poor girl, she doesn't even realize that she is being bullied but she cannot trust anyone to even say that she can't eat certain food. If they swapped the food with Gyokuyo's food that has fish and it passed the food taster, Lishu has to eat it because in front of the emperor, she cannot be 'picky'. Lucky for Lishu's food taster, she's saved from poison because she swapped the food and Mao Mao is more resistance to it and more knowledgeable to know it is poison (Mao Mao is grateful for that🤣). Lishu's food with no fish is the one with poison so she is the target. Lishu's food taster probably knew Lishu can't eat but they don't know the term 'allergy' (just the term "food she can't eat") or how severe it can be. Knowing that serving "food she can't eat" to Lishu is the same as poisoning and knowing of how severe it can be, it is enough to put terror in Lishu's food taster. What appear to be like 'little prank' in their eyes, can be a very serious matter that may cause their lives. Mao Mao knew how cheap the life of commoner esp food taster. Don't look from Mao Mao's standard because she has built resistance to poison in a way! In general, it is a scary position. You taste food without knowing when you'll taste poison. She kept some info about the food taster. Mao Mao knew about how cheap their life, that's why she kept some info to herself. Her words may cause the life of the food taster. If the higher-ups know, Lishu's food taster will be guilty in either ways: 1. swapping the food with poison, it'll be as if she wants to poison Gyokuyo. 2. swapping the food with no poison, she'll be guilty because knowingly serving food Lishu can't eat is the same as poisoning her. (Either ways the targets will be either Gyokuyo or Lishu, both high rank concubines. It will cause the life of the food taster). Mao Mao does not want to be careless with her words esp if it's still just prediction. Just like in ep 3, if she said something, that lady Fuyou may not have her happy ending with the guy she loves. Mao Mao just saw too many lives were taken when they could be saved. Thanks for the reaction, enjoy your discussion. You are pretty smart with the theories. 😎
14:37 That silhouette back at the end of Episode 5 wasn't of Gyokuyou. It was of Lishu's Food Taster who was switching the food to bully Lishu. I mean, think about it logically. Gyokuyou is a High Rank Concubine, meaning she has to always stay in-focus of people and the Emperor in a public setting like a Garden Party, and there is always someone with her to serve her as she is like a lord. In a situation like this were everyone's eyes are on them, how would they be able to secretly sneak around in public setting like that (with prior preparation) and do sneaky stuff. It would be much easier to get someone else to do the job for you.
3:44 she was bullying Lishu by swapping the dishes so that Lishu was given fish - she just thought she was picky and didnt like fish. This led to the poisoned dish going from Lishu to Gyokuyu. Technically, she unknowingly swapped out a poisoned dish for a fish dish
The reason for the bullying is because of the fact that Lishu was originally the PREVIOUS Emperor's Concubine; the CURRENT Emperor's FATHER; when she was 9 years old. When that Emperor died, she was offered to the CURRENT Emperor as a Concubine. Thankfully; via the Manga; The Current Emperor's sexual tastes are actual ADULT women, not children.
They don't know what allergies are. They don't even have the word for it, that's why MaoMao said "There are food people can't eat" and never used the word allergies. Lishu's lady's in waiting think that she's being a picky eater, probably even the ones in charge of the food think so, but meals are prepared according to each concubine liking. The poison tester changed the meals to bully her because she thought it was just that, being picky, and got scared when she found out about allergies and that it could even be mortal. She had no intention of causing her actual harm, and she found out she could have killed Lishu, so she's scared and feeling guilty.
Why is everyone confusing the fact that it was Lishu who was targeted with the poison, not Gyokuyou. It was the Lishu's Food Tester who switched the food, causing the poisoned dish to go to Gyokuyou.
8:58 The pleasure district being right behind the palace was true to real life. Consorts were given special education to make themselves appealing to the emperor. However, since it was a very conservative and misogynistic society, consorts' education didn't really include anything about sex. At least, they didn't learn anything risque that would actually help them seduce the emperor. Ironic, considering the easiest way to gain power would be to father his children. Because of this most emperors actually found consorts boring and would go to the pleasure district to let off steam. For this reason, when Mao Mao gave consort Lihua the technique on how to please the emperor she was actually providing her with a big advantage over the other consorts!
You have to remember rules are rules. Maomao cannot run. It would get worse and everyone she knows executed. She is under a worked term contract. It does matter if she was an unwilling worker. She gets to keep at least a part of the wage. She gets fed, she has a roof over her heand she is allowed to communicate with the outside. This is why she keeps talking about just keeping her head down doing her time and getting out when it's over. Temporary employment agencies go hard when they get a cut off the top for the duration of the contract.
@12:05, naaaaah......I think she was sweating because she was picking on one of the emperor's women and she can get killed for that shit alone.....which is why Mao didn't say anything...she didn't want her do die just for being petty
The food tester of Lady Lishu knew that she "didn't" like fish and gave it to her to bully her, because Lishu would look bad for not eating one of the emperors favorite food. But the food tester didn't know about the allergy... So when she found out that she gave her mistress food from which she could die and her being picky with her food has a legitimate reason, she understood she made a very big mistake by bullying her... but by swapping the dishes, her food tester accidentally avoided being poisoned by her original dish...
I think the poison tester can say something and have the food switched out. But once it get's to the lady it would be considered a slight to the emperor not to eat.
12:21 Well, the general understanding of people regarding Allergies isn't that high in Asia, and even now people don't really take it that seriously here unlike the West. People usually would laugh at you if you say that you are deadly allergic to something, because they don't consider it a serious issue. This was even worse in the olden days, when it wasn't even considered as a diseases.

Its So obvious neither of you have watch a historical Chinese Drama lol. I'm not the Most familiar but I think I can explain what I've noticed. Respect and politeness are above EVERYTHING. If someone of higher Rank tells you to do something, you have to do it for politeness's sake. Thankfully most of their language revolves around talking around things and if you were clever you could 'politely' argue, distract or cause an 'accident'. But as an example in the drama Ruyi's Love in the Palace, Ruyi is a concubine to the Emperor. The Emperor's 'Mother' the Empress Dowager (ED for brevity) does not like Ruyi for political reasons. At an event for the ED where all the concubines offered various gifts to ED, Ruyi offered a hot homemade soup. ED critiqued the ingredients used and did not accept the hot bowl but neither did she give Ruyi permission to put it down. So to not to be rude Ruyi had to stand there holding the hot bowl, Burning her fingers. I can't remember if ED eventually gave her leave to put it down or if she dropped it but for the sake of hierarchy and politeness, self-preservation is not allowed without extreme cunning to talk your way out or figuring out how to prevent such incidents before they can happen. Lishu was served food infront of the Emperor that made it past the taste tester, she had no polite way to refuse so she Had to eat it.

Gyokuyou isn’t evil she’s a wholesome messy auntie and I love her for it 😊😊
Maomao pulls the "Yo kid, wanna hangout with some hot chicks" to Lihaku.
14:35 that wasnt gyokuyou's sillhouette!! it was the taste tester's! go back and look closely!
12:16
concubine: milord husband im allergic, this meal would kill me.
Emperor: so would an execution 🗿
12:49
I don't think the food taster knew about Lady Lishu allergies.
YEAH! RASHI IS BACK WITH MORE APOTHECARY DIARIES
Old times. People are not aware of what allergy is. Mao Mao explained a bit abut how allergy works but felt like even she wasn't sure about it.
I just love your guys reactions to a show like this.
Sheera had me crying. "So hes a pokemon parent" comedy gold.
I'm excited for your reaction to episode 8!!!!! Especially at the end of the episode!
She was mad casual when she was kidnapped, and mad casual when she returned home. I think she learned it from her father 😂.
Plot getting thick
The food tester of Lady Lishu knew that she "didn't" like fish and gave it to her to bully her, because Lishu would look bad for not eating one of the emperors favorite food.
But the food tester didn't know about the allergy...
So when she found out that she gave her mistress food from which she could die and her being picky with her food has a legitimate reason, she understood she made a very big mistake by bullying her...
but by swapping the dishes, her food tester accidentally avoided being poisoned by her original dish...
Xiaolan, the palace information dealer, all the info you need, for food and sweets hehehe
I think the poison tester can say something and have the food switched out. But once it get's to the lady it would be considered a slight to the emperor not to eat.
Lol i didnt notice the detail that they were thinking about Jinshi… so he sneezed😭it was so random to me when I first watched it
they don't have a concept of allergies back then, so they don't understand that some foods are borderline poisonous to some people.
MaoMao dad did not give a single fuck that she came back, bro said gotta charge it to the game after she didn't turn up for a while.
I still sometimes can't believe that the VA for Gyokuyou is the same VA for Anya and Frieren.
I think whats his name (havent memoried it but purple haired handsome man) was implied in the tea party episode to be the younger brother of the emporer. My wife said he came from the area where the younger brother was supposed to be seated. We will sew i guess!
OMG THE BIGGEST SPOILER RIGHT THERE, Jinshi's other hairpin, the red one, had a dragon on it and the only ones who can wear a dragon are the Imperial family!!!!(this show keep getting better)
They swapped Lishu’s dishes with gyokyos dishes because they have fish in them. Lishu’s dishes are made specially without fish that’s why they think she’s a picky eater. Lishu’s couldn’t refuse to eat it in public because it’s disrespectful to the emperor
Yo? When is The Bear coming to UA-cam? Or is it just Patreon Exclusive? It was a surprise seeing that on one of the cards in this video. Fucking love that show.
Check out Blue Samurai, it's an exceptional show too!
I thought this show was going to be like the Raven of the inner palace but its much better. You guys should also react to the Scott Pilgrim movie and show if you haven't. It's really good!! The movie is very unique and I think as an ex-graphic designer, Roshi would love it.
I don't think Jinshi is a eunuch. I think he is the emperors younger brother. notice that he was wearing a crest on his clothes at the party. only the royals specifically the king (males) tends to wear stuff like that with the crests. other ppl don't dress like that.

Like seriously has Maomao's dad been old his whole life😅
Maomao ain't no snitch
When is black lagoon coming 🫤?
POKÉMON PARENT YEEEAAAAHHHHHH
No, the ladies-in-waiting think the girl is just being picky about her food, she isn't telling them about her previous reactions, I don't think. The food taster just thought she was making the concubine eat something she didn't like.
home
Nah i have to read the manga now that i've caught up with the anime😅. I wanted to wait untill they finished the season before watching it but i heared that it will have 24 eps and i can't wait that long plus the way i keep seeing people talk about this made me unable to resist watching it 😂
Its So obvious neither of you have watch a historical Chinese Drama lol.
So excited!!!¡
Meow Meow Zedong
Hi, it's not relate to this Anime but I would recommend YaBoyRoshi and you guys to have a try The Dark Gathering, it has 23 Eps right now the story about a group of mc catch Ghosts to fight God like Pokemon but Darker super dark and Japanese urban legend and horror story relate. Please give it a try.
Question: Y'all not gonna react to the trailer to "Rebel Moon" even though Sheera is in the movie?😂
wut? really?
@@LuisSierra42 Nah, I'm joking...but it's an actress in the movie looks just like Sheera...she has like Blue make up on her face.
She did write letter home. And, they'd hunt her down and split her from neck to navel, if she ran.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yaboyroshi,it's obviously shown in previous episode about Jinshi identity if focus every hints shown.
My kingdom for a Blue Eye Samurai reaction T-T
patataa

firsttttttttttttttt
Her dad's last words are because HE'S from the rear palace. It was revealed at the end of the previous episode. The emperor's son (back when he was still a prince) died, so they crippled his knee and turned him out.
Lets not spoil people
That is a future episode to where this is.
No need to say all that in this video
This episode me realize how raw Maomao is. Shes literally doing forensic examinations in that era like how smart are you. Shes just absorbing every info she gets to construct a very believable and logical conclusion
