The smell is real. The streets were filled with exceament. Sadly, your understanding of Rome is confused. Also, there is only one contemporary painting of a roman emperor. It was the black one...
paintings are not accurate depictions, there was never a black emperor, but who cares, they use anglosaxon actors in this films and we all know ancient romans were not as pale and in some cases weird to look at as Hechinger and Joseph Quinn that look more like the barbarians romans were fighting and not as romans, romans looked more like Pedro Pascal in any case
the part about the painting is total nonsense. what are you even talking about? there are thousands of contemporary paintings of roman emperors, and who even cares? contemporary paintings tell us nothing

For those who've seen it, what's your favourite line from the new film? I'm sure there must be at least one epic, memorable line, just like the confrontation speech from the original. Right?
Gladiator has been my #1 movie for a LONG time, and I've been sceptical about Gladiator II ever since its first announcement. The first one ends so perfectly, that I suspected that any sequel would at best add nothing, and at worst undermine the original. It's also arrived way too late, just like Sin City 2 (another disappointing/pointless sequel to a fantastic first film)...
Yeah like Grace said, in the first movie we're told that "There was once a dream that was Rome", and we get to see that through following Maximus, who embody that vision - A loving father, a loyal husband, a just leader. Which is yeah, romantic - but so was the dream the Emperor was talking about. It's idealism - it's classic storytelling of good prevailing over evil. The first movie is so smart about this, but now I'm starting to wonder if this was a intentional or just a fluke from Ridley Scott lmao. I'll never forget him for butchering my favourite movie's sequel like this😭
The lead does not have a historical face. He looks from our time. No presence or charisma. Will give this a hard pass. Looks awful with sharks. Do they have laser beams!? I will go if they do.
I just saw "Red One" and liked it a lot. I'd rather ses Red One again than Gladiator II lol. Red One is not the greatest movie but it was better than I thought it'd be. Very entertaining and I laughed multiple times at what I was seeing on screen. It had a good hearted story too. Red One is a good family movie and if ur a fan of Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, you'll dig it. Skip Gladiator II. I loved the original Gladiator and hated the idea they tried to make a sequel especially so many years later.
When historians point out things about "historical movies", the majority brush it off as insignificant. But making an (as accurate as it can be) historical movie is comparable to staying accurate with the source material on a current fantasy show. There was cohesion at the start with both circumstances. They sell us this dream of venturing into Ancient Rome but in reality it's rich out of touch people making ego boosts for "broad societies."
Rich out of touch people in actual Rome, and people that created this film. 110% correct. It makes me so sad that awesome smaller movies from unknown directors get brushed aside for more CGI filled messes... they’ll never learn... they should see it coming... but I guess Rome acted like they didn’t see it coming either. 🤷🏼♀️
@@Persephone_Personified And yet, a rich American filmmaker has nothing in common with a Roman elite. Total lack of class. These kinds of movies are stereotypical, as if Rome is just gladiators and muscles. For the purposes of "entertainment", we accept that and try to enjoy the spectacle. But when you learn that it hasn't any memorable depiction of the spectacle of Rome and it tries to be complex with a bunch of characters and history into one film, no wonder it fails. Unfortunately the protagonist might be a clear copy of Maximus, and the fact that he's his son is what initially gave it away.
@@Persephone_PersonifiedAlso, Rome saw it coming and accepted change. The empire split into western and eastern parts. When the west was falling with Rome, Constantinople in the east was rising. For the last years of the west they even changed cities and Ravenna was the capital city when Rome fell. In due course the western civilization of Rome feel but the eastern part of the empire continued for another thousand years. Very interesting history, worthy of a read. 👌

I thought the trailer did not look good. Mescal was the only one who looked good.
@@CarlotaEmperatriz Dio, claimed otherwise. Severan dynasty were northern africans. At a time wherein the population of Africa was largely dark skinned. Go watch some videos of Egypt prior to the 1950s. Thats when Sudan was created. Similar demographics were visible in Libya.
@@CarlotaEmperatriz Whats your source for there being no Black emperors? Dont you think that if Romans were white they would of shared their ability to write with Slavic and N.Europeans? Why then do we not find a written language from the region until Runic c. 150 CE?
@@samkostos4520 Northern Africans are not Black. Not even today, not back then.
Who cares.
Bring on wicked! My theatre is basically sold out all through thanksgiving for premium screen grace! Gladiator is no where near as popular I think.
Wicked is definitely gonna devour
it’s gonna be so good
84% on rotten tomato
@@Mntguy-nr9vl - It is not at 74%
The other reviews seem pretty good...
Welcome to Beyond the Trailer 😂
do they?
@@johnjungkook2721 Yes.
Still going to watch this over Wicked.
I'll never forget him for butchering my favourite movie's sequel like this😭
Thank you grace you have helped me save some money 😊
The lead does not have a historical face. He looks from our time. No presence or charisma. Will give this a hard pass. Looks awful with sharks. Do they have laser beams!? I will go if they do.
Oh man, I’m still excited to see it this weekend
It's actually an OK time out. Go ahead and see it.
save your money for something better
I just saw "Red One" and liked it a lot. I'd rather ses Red One again than Gladiator II lol. Red One is not the greatest movie but it was better than I thought it'd be. Very entertaining and I laughed multiple times at what I was seeing on screen. It had a good hearted story too.
Red One is a good family movie and if ur a fan of Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, you'll dig it.
Skip Gladiator II. I loved the original Gladiator and hated the idea they tried to make a sequel especially so many years later.
Paul Mescal is ALWAYS good, his filmography is exceptional, so I have to see it for myself, it premieres on the 14th here in Europe.
Usually when Grace doesn't like something, I do. So I'm still very excited! Great cast!
Just saw the film i loved it
When historians point out things about "historical movies", the majority brush it off as insignificant.
I think we all need to be realistic the GLADIATOR was always MASTERPIECE let’s face it 24years later Scott is in a different time in his life , also No Hans Zimmer that’s a BIG LOSS , Russel Crowe in his Prime and Joaquin Phoniex arguably best performance (JOKER) I’m looking for a solid film that is all my expectations are that and that only who know we may see a Directors cut
Can't say I'm surprised. Ridley Scott hasn't been able to direct a movie since the 1990s.
Yeah, I don’t always agree with Grace but I have also seen Ridley Scott’s recent films. Aside from The Last Duel, I was incredibly underwhelmed so I fear she might be right about this one.
I like you Grace but the film has a strong 84% RT score. Also its in bad faith to give out spoilers such as who dies in this review just because you don't like the movie. Given the score many people still will want to see it and not have it ruined.
84% is not a strong score for this type of movie.
@@sharazisspecialyes it is
now at 77% with 6.8/10 avg score.
@@nafischowdhury7375 So basically the same RT score as the original.
As the trailer foreshadowed and your review confirms it seems i can skip this one in cinema. But i can recommend the show domina to satisfy the roman itch.
Yeah I guess I’ll wait for streaming to watch this. Wish they just left it alone with the original
Grace, I stopped watching this mid way as you definitely had several spoilers, I love when you review movies but you really need to rethink what a spoiler is
