I’ve been running boats offshore, both charter and private tournament boats ,for 36 yrs and I have three suggestions for situations like this. One,always keep track of your compass heading so if you lose your electronics you can still get back. Two,keep a Garmin Inreach on your boat at all times so you can signal for help, let loved ones know where you are and you also have the ability to use the Garmins tracking and charting capabilities if your main plotter goes out.Third, always wear a life jacket when it gets this bad because if the worst happens you won’t have time to dig them out.Great video guys and glad you made it back safe

Capt. Dan when i heard you say the electronics went out, I was hoping you still had a compass on board. I have had a ride like that myself. And yes it feels good to hit land even if you are soaking wet. When i got my Capt. Lic. A old time Captain said if i gave you 500.00 bucks to help you get started, what would you spend it on. I told him 499.00 would go to a compass. He said had ask 30 Captains that and i was the only one that said the right thing. As you said you lost electronic's and a compass doesn't need power to work. And the drag noise you were hearing was static electricity in the air building up to make you guys a lightning rod. When you have weather like that always put the rods down. Don't care how big or small a boat is. Rods are easy to replace but your life is not.

Dan, you need to get a radar so you can see these storms before you get caught in them. They are a little pricy but someone like you with all the fishing you do would get a lot of use out of it. Think about it...Stay safe out there and tight lines.

I am from St. Albert, Alberta Canada.."the Canadian prairies" so naturally I watch deep sea adventures in wonder. I recently watched the first 2 seasons of Bloodline just because it was set in the Florida Keys..Bloodline is an excellent series on several levels but the culture and settings are so exotic to those of us that only dream off living near crystal clear ocean waters and regularly eating fresh fish off the Florida keys. The Florida Fishing Couple bring ocean adventures to the Canadian prairies..thanks for that..

same thing happened to me 3 yrs ago off of big pine key. we were out 8 miles on my 22ft sailfish center console . seas went from glass flat to 6-8ft seas as a nasty storm rolled in. took us 2hrs to get near shore going 3-5 kts and just trying to stay on the back sides of the waves. the was the one of the few times I radioed the coast guard and gave my location so they could check in with us. glad you made it out ok.

You need to get some foul weather gear that you can tie off to the boat with. And get those poles down in the boat whenever there's lightning! I don't know if it would have helped, but you can get a sea anchor - it's like a big canvas bag - that will keep you from getting moved all over by a storm when it's too deep for a regular anchor. I've been caught right offshore in a sailboat in something like that - there was a waterspout that came over and our boom fell. It came on so quickly that we had little time to prepare - we just managed to get the sails down.

Been there done that flat calm to 12 foot sea and 60 knot winds and we were 40 miles off shore. One storm after another hit us and we ran out of gas. People do not understand how bad the ocean can get so fast. We left at 2am and got back at mid night the next day. we were fishing 80 miles offshore. What happened to the poor Jupiter kids. There were some shrimper off Savannah watching a tornado come down the Savannah River. They were taking pictures and posting on facebook and they ended up all dying. The shrimp boat flipped. Not sure why they did not run away from the storm.

I got a garmin with weather after that storm. It shows where the lightning is worst. You can loose the gps signal and weather when it gets really bad. We also have 2 to 3 EPIRBS onboard going way offshore. I been hit by lightning 3 times. twice on a hobie cat 16 and once on a 25 fishing boat where it hit the radar unit came down the wire and knocked me out of the helm. It was a white out storm. They day we got hit 40 miles offshore the lightning was just sizzling over out heads. The out rigger were jammed in the base and we could not lay them down.
University of Miami have concluded that a bad thunderstorm can generate a 40 foot rough wave with a down burst generating 100 mph winds. I read a story in readers digest 40 years ago about guys fishing in the gulf. They looked to the west and all they saw was a black line coming at them. The next thing they knew, they were in 100 mph winds and waves of 80 feet. It was all they could do to keep from sinking. A similar storm took down a big sailboat that they made a movie of White Squall.
The day we got hit, we were tearing the mahi up 80 miles out on a mill pond day. All of a sudden. the coast guard comes scream on the radio. Boats from Charleston to Daytona seek immediate shelter. Severe squall coming. we only made it 40 miles before getting clobbered. There were a lot of boats out there that took a beating with broken arms and busted ribs. I tore my shoulder hanging onto the T-top.
You all should have been able to keep an eye on this storm with your cell phones. 6 miles should be within range. Cell phones do us no good 80 miles offshore.

Another time we were 70 miles out in a 23 proliner and the storms came in to the west to the South and to the North. Harry started running to the East and I said no way, you do not have enough fuel to get to Bermuda. I said see where those water spots are, that is NW. We ran to the North and it was so rough 5-6 I had my knees locked against the console and I was running the throttle ad Harry was steering the boat. Another time in a 23 contender we were 40 miles out and the whole sky turned into a pouring down rain. We ran 30 miles and it just did not let up.
rough waves off Savannah. There was a guy who was young and had a lot of money. He had a fast boat and traded it for a 40 foot Lurhs. He was fishing at the stream and started screaming over the radio, we are sinking. He got hit by a big rogue wave and the boat fell off the wave and it cracked several stringers in the boat and the cockpit was completely full of sea water. He did not sink, but it scared the bloody hell out of him. Years go by and I was told he died. He owned a strip club and got on a Ninja bike and they found him down the road on the side of 17 totally knocked out. I was told he never recovered.
They had a cruise ship off the Georgia coast got hit by a 69 foot rogue wave and it damaged the ship so much, they had to pull into Charleston for repairs.
Norwegian Dawn, (three waves in succession, off the coast of Georgia, 16 April 2005)
"The sea had actually calmed down when the 21-metre (69 ft) wave seemed to come out of thin air… Our captain, who has 20 years on the job, said he never saw anything like it."[30]
"The water exerted enough force to shear off the welds for the aluminum rail supports on the [ninth and tenth level] balconies of two cabins, allowing the teak balcony rails to break loose and crash into the cabin windows. The broken glass filling the drains compounded the water damage by allowing a large amount of water to enter the two cabins and damage the carpets in 61 other cabins. The ship’s operating at reduced speed when the waves hit probably limited the damage."[31]

Frog togs rain gear. Super cheap but high quality and work wonderfully. Blaze orange would probably be the color you want (if they make it in that color). Glad you made it back home. Be careful out there.

Dan, Where did you get the pole for the GoPro, that is cut for rod holders?

    • @FloridaFishingCouple
      @FloridaFishingCouple  4 роки тому +2

Derek Wilkes: D&D makes all of my custom rods and made the GoPro mount you saw in the video out of a fishing rod blank. They also made us a custom gaff with our logo as well. You can reach them at 954-818-9148. Tell them Florida Fishing Couple sent you. They do great work. - Capt Dan

Why didn’t they check the weather before they set out? I’m sure Tstorms were predicted and anyone who knows Florida knows full well that they pop up like clock work in the afternoon. A prudent seaman always keeps track of where he is, with modern GPS plotters, it’s a no brainer. Always wear a horsecollar PFD when you’re offshore. It wouldn’t hurt to have an EPRB onboard as well.

Hey Captain, great video. I thought a similar incident happened to you last year when you and Heiko got caught in a bad storm. This looks like round 2. Anyways I am glad you are both safe. Take care.
