I'm from central Minnesota, USA. Our winters can be brutal. Usually we experience a couple of weeks of -25 f or even -40 f. Wind-chill is extremely cold. Our winter lasts from November-March. We don't leave the house during the coldest most dangerous times. We make sure to have a few days of food on hand ahead of time. Vehicles won't start unless they are in a garage plugged in to a block heater. It's dangerous to go out driving. Definitely prepare a winter survival kit to put in your vehicle. Breathing in that kind of weather hurts. It hurts your face. Your nostrils freeze. I love being cozy in a warm home with plenty of good food and having my loved ones close to me during artic freezing weather and blizzards. Minnesota has a huge Swedish community! I'm partly Swedish. We live 8 miles away from a town called Mora! Every winter we have a ski race vasaloppet. Very Swedish!!!

Hi guys! I'm a Florida girl who has been living in Sweden for 12 years now, going on 13 and my absolute BEST winter tip to you both is to visit the second hand stores any time you are in a town that has one or several. Winter gear is EXPENSIVE but also ubiquitous as everybody has to have it. You will find everything you need and for prices from 60 to 200 crowns for stuff that would cost you thousands new. I once bought an icelandic sheerling coat for 60 crowns at my local second hand store. Now WHY the second hand store is your friend besides price is that you are going to need multiples of things because they WILL get wet and take their sweet time drying. Get yourself some snowpants and if you have a Granngården or maybe even an ICA MAXI not too far away have a look for some 'fodrade gumistövlar' in addition to whatever other winter shoes you end up choosing. Wellies with a warm lining are your friend and will be excellent around the property. I'd also recommend a shoe dryer. You'll find that at Claes Olsson or Jula or maybe even ICA Maxi as well. Wet, cold feet are the worst. Keep an eye out at the second hand stores for some winter work overalls (think auto mechanic onesie style) which will be really great when you need to load more wood or take care of things outdoors around the house. Much warmer as the heat circulates round your whole body. The other must have is some good quality long underwear (top and bottom 'underställe' in Swedish) I also live in a red cottage with CRAP insulation and here's my other piece of advice. Keep an eye out at the second hand store for RUGS and get yourself some nice warm slippers. You will be glad you have them. Best of wishes!

Hi Both, If you only plan to be here for one year (Therefore just one winter) I have an absolute load of winter gear (Including boots) That I can probably loan you. I'm normally running a full season of extreme cold weather survival courses here in the North of Sweden, but the Corona situation means this particular winter season is unusually quiet, and therefore all my course equipment is just sat in storage. I'd gladly rather to put it to good use and let you access it for the winter, saving you some money in the process and also being environmentally sensitive along the way (better to recycle/upcycle than buy new) Just drop me a note if this idea is of use/interest. I'm only a couple of hours down the road from you, but also easy to meet up in Skellefteå and bring a bunch of gear with me for you to try on.

I have lived in Alaska for 50 years. In my opinion, a good pair rubber bottom, leather top boots with thick felt liners are the best boots for everyday use in cold climates. They are comfortable and they breathe, which is important. An all rubber boot will build up condensation in side which is not nice when you stop and stand around in the cold. I am sure they have similar foot ware in Sweden. With regard to letting the house get below freezing in the winter, don't!!! Frozen waterlines will split. A broken water line in a cold house can destroy the entire house. It will become like a mushroom cave. I have seen it happen. It is a very ugly situation!! Be careful.

A must for all car owners up here are that the car must have electrical heating of the motor + the passenger compartment. Its normal for cars sold here in Sweden that they are delivered with the heaters installed. I don know how it is with your GB-registered Volvo, but I highly recommend you to install a "blockvärmare" or "motorvärmare" (this will heating the coolant in your motor) plus a "kupevärmare" (compartment heater). Choose a compartment heater that can be switched for low power and high power (600W or 1200W). The heaters are connected by a special set of cables and the connection to the line power (230 V) is med by a special connector mounted in the front of the car. You can by a programmable timer so that you will have a warm and comfy car in the morning! Typically you will have a 10A fuse so that the 1200W heater will work just fine! The block heater is typically 500 W! The block heater is mounted direct into the block (by removing a plug) so that is something you would let a garage do. Also its important to check the level of the antifreeze coolant at least -30 C I would recommend where you live!

From the mountains of Colorado... Thrift stores are the best because i find we need two sets of everything! Its great if you get all winterized and dont have to work in the snow but plan for dealing with wood gathering, power outages or frozen/broken pipes and stuck vehicle. Handling any of that in a Blizzard gets your gear all wet and you need a second set thats dry and even a set that stays in the car in case of having to dig the car out ofva snow bank. Also ice melt product for car door handles, winshield and sometimes the front door 😄. You need to keep a storage of water in the house in case pipes freeze as well.

I've seen a several youtubers taking on projects destined to fail, often due to naivety and ignorance. I don't think you guys are among those. Your hard work and most important: the fact that you listen to and ask for advice is what will take you through this winter and more.
With that said, some (mostly car) advice for the winter:
    - Get a snow cover for the wind screen. This will save time when the car is completely covered in snow. And they are cheap: www.biltema.se/bil---mc/biltillbehor/bilkapell/sno--och-solskydd-2000031876
    - If you don't have a block heater, get one! It's worth the installation costs. I'm not sure if your V70 is a petrol or a diesel, but if it's the latter, consider getting an fuel operated engine heater. They are not cheap, but considering how "fun" getting stranded in -30*C is, it might be worth it. And get a interior electric heater for the car. The swedish keywords are block heater:motorvärmare, interior heater:kupévärmare, fuel operated(dieselvärmare) vendors : Webasto and Eberspächer. Also for the diesel heater, check with the dealer if you need a bigger battery for it.
    Interior heater: www.biltema.se/bil---mc/biltillbehor/vinterprodukter/kupevarmare/kupevarmare-1400-w-2000035069?gclid=CjwKCAiAqJn9BRB0EiwAJ1SztfLDkN9EaP-dG0zzdmt-6JZR-5v1Q4WSQBN_Kdtc1K78e4_1gTxn6RoCioYQAvD_BwE
    - Carry a shovel and a tow line in the trunk. If you don't need to be shoveled or pulled out of snow, someone else might need to be by you! (tow line: bogserlina)
    - Also, a few videos ago I think I saw something worrying: a Semko-17 3-phase plug on an extension cord. Check if the cover of that thing is made out of metal, if so they may become live (due to corrosion). A 400V tickle is definitely lethal. Have an electrician change that to CEE-plugs/outlets in the future if the 3-phase is something you use regularly.
    - Consider getting a sun light (solterapilampa/"sun therapy lamp") and stock up on vitamin D (5000 IU or more). Seasonal affective disorder is a thing, but it can be managed!
With all this said, I look forward to seeing more of you 2! Your positive energy is contagious!

@@NaomiandJack Don't worry so much about the cold. If the air is dry -25 is not so bad at all. -10 is actually quite nice. I have had the unfortunate experience of spending a lot of winters in Gothenburg and Stockholm. -5 here with our high humidity is awful. You won't freeze to death, but you sometimes wish that you did. I would trade our humid half hearted cold for the freezing cold of Norrland any day. It is only when the temperature goes well below -25 that things starts to get a bit hairy. But a few layers of clothing and warm socks will see you through that. It is not rocket science. Just keep your feet, hands and head warm. Wool caps, socks and mittens are cheap. So are undergarments and sweaters. You do not need to buy super expensive specialized clothes, as long as you are not planning to stay outdoors all day in extreme temperatures. And why would you do that?

When paint companies were asked in turn why red paint was cheaper than other colors, they responded because we sell more red paint than any other color.

I live in Northern Canada and in January and February the thermometer can go down as low as -50. We prepare for winter in many different ways. We use shrinking plastic on the inside of the windows. I have double layers of curtains. This year, I am going to do the same to my inside "front door". The warmest coats are Canada Goose. They are expensive though! The warmest legging I have owned are made of cashmere. They also cost a lot but they are the warmest and softest (I have lived in the North since 1991!). I wear them under some snow pants. As for boots, I buy my boots one size bigger than my normal boot size and fit them with insulated soles. I wear thick socks and it seems to do the trick. I am watching you scrapping your car... For my car, I buy a cover for my windshield so I do not have to scrape in the morning. I always leave my windshield wipers up when I park my car in my driveway (I don't have a garage): it makes it much easier to clean off the snow in the morning. We (everyone in town who doesn't have a garage) put an electric blanket around the car battery and we plug it in an outside outlet as soon as the temperature goes down to -20. I hope this help. I am sure you will survive! Good luck!

One winter I lived in Canada, and what I learned from that is: layering is all.
Multiple layers are far better then a very warm sweater. I therefore like to wear vests, you open them up and voila: cooling down but still warm. You really want to avoid sweating to much, because if you start to sweat, you cool down, which is not what you want.
I really like merino woolen socks(no blisters!), and as base layering.
It’s soft and wool doesn’t hurt when you sweat. You stay warm, but moist will damp out.
    It costs a bit though..
I hope you have enough wood for the winter! Can’t wait for more vid’s, love them.
And you do know that wood needs to dry for a year before it’s practical to use as fire wood? Can’t wait for that video, cutting down wood from your own forest 🌳

Winter is coming yes and there are things you can do to make your firewood last longer. For example, every window I have seen in your videos have been single sheet of glass. In cold climate there needs to be at least double glass in every window (modern windows have 3). Other thing you can check is the amount of isolation you have in the roof and is it possible to put some more (if snow melts on the roof in the winter then you know you have too little). In Finland (where I live) there should be 40cm isolation but the more the better. Heat rises so the roof is the most important place to isolate (investigate how to do it right!). Seals in the doors and windows are also easy to change if needed (if you feel any drag).

For you car, you should also buy extra headlights since it will be mostly dark throughout winter. While you’re at it, buy flash lights, small and big ones, and the kind that you can wear on your head! You’ll be trudging around in the dark most of winter.

You may be home bound for long periods of time. You must stock up on food supplies also. But, be careful where you stock the supplies. Canned goods will explode if allowed to get down to 0. Ask locals what items to consider and plan for a shelf in the kitchen to store it for this winter to save money.

Im from a town near your swedish house but I have been living abroad in the Uk and now Germany for years now. You stayed at a hotel in my hometown and said it was near (ish) to the house.
Anyways, here is a tip regarding winter shoes, from someone who grew up near your current area.
For winter shoes or rather necessary winter attire in the north of sweden, we use a sock that you pull over your normal socks called tjocksockar in swedish. Translated to thick socks. We always use tjocksockar when we are out in nature during winter and in general when it gets really cold. A must at - 30 C. This way you can get nicer looking winter shoes but still be really nice, cozy and warm. Sometimes you can even wear normal tennis shoes and be just fine. Dont underestimate the cozy magic of tjocksockar, im telling you. :)
This is also a common gift that your grandmother would give you in sweden for christmas or just whenever hehe.
About Winter tyres: You can get something called "dubbdäck" in sweden. Dubbdäck are tires with a built in chain, kinda, im just saying that to simplify explaining how they work. Everyone uses dubbdäck, no ones uses tyre chains in that area but its neecessary if you decide to drive over to norway during winter time.
I forgot to say that you can find these kinds of socks in most sdtores that sell socks and clothing. Just ask around for them. Im telling you, THIS WILL BE THE THING FOR YOU! :)

  • @oidipositas
    @oidipositas 3 роки тому +5

If noone has mentioned it: use "Underställ" in the winter when it gets down to -30. ALWAYS stay dry. Nice warm clothes/shoes is key. Another really important thing is to learn how to be cold. Accepting cold is a skill. Beeing a bit cold in the autumn will help you adapt easier to the more extreme temperatures that you will have to deal with in winter.

When painting the house with the Falu Rödfärg you should mix in 5% of Tar in the bucket.
That helps preserve the paint and make it last longer.
Also, the paint will not stain clothes etc. If you accidently rub against the wall.
Next time you paint, in 5-10 years, use the Tar for better end result.
    Free tip from me.
Love your restoration of your rooms
I hope you have someother source of heat than wood, that is allt of work and you easily need about 30 kubic meters of wood fore one winter in the north.

After living your neighbour country finland for 4 years and coming from a tropical country these are my takes
    1. Those big cumbersome jackets do keep you warm but they are not comfortable to wear 😢😢. Better buy some down jacket with feel power more then 750 it will be written on the jacket. pair it with a good wind breaker.
    2. If you are driving a lot please buy a new set of winter tyres it is very important.
    3. Any boots that are by nordic companies would do good in the negative temperature but you have to buy wool socks. If you are working a lot outside you can also buy heated shoe sole pads. Available online
    4. I don’t know have you started taking vitamins, if no start quickly. I have struggled more with the darkness than the cold.
    5. If your car does not have engine heater install one it will help a lot.

I have two sets of boots- larger snow boots for walking around in deep snow and some smaller boots for when you're just running errands and walking in places with less snow. Make sure you get boots that have really good grip, here its called "Arctic Grip," there is nothing worse than slipping on ice hidden under snow!! Also make sure they are water proof, there is nothing worse than wet feet in winter. Brands I recommend are : Sorel, Kamik, Merrell or just something that uses thinsulate, or lined inside. Make sure you have enough room for thick wool socks! Best of luck guys!!

When it comes to snow tires, you should have the pair with the most tread put on the rear axle, not the front. Even on a fwd car! Good tread on your rear tires will keep the car stable on the road and prevent fish tailing. The slightly less tread on the front tires will simply cause you to adapt your speed and driving to the conditions slightly more, which is actually a good thing.

Hmm what does one need to survive swedish winter.. A LOT of blankets!! Growing up in a old cold swedish house thats how you survive cold mornings and nights haha. Wool socks, proper thick ones (when you buy winter shoes, make sure to buy they in a size bigger so your wool socks fit). A shoe heater has saved my family a lot of times when you come home with wet shoes at night and need the shoes to be warm and dry the morning after. Im quite a warm person but when it gets to those crazy degrees I'd say what saves me the most is a nice big thick winter scarf. Wrap it around your neck and you can also pull it over your face when it gets cold. Different sized gloves. Sometimes you want thick gloves when your not gonna use your hands that much, but it's nice to have slimmer gloves aswell when you need to use your hands more. As for the car, get defreeze spray for the windows, get the squared scrapes (i think they work the best) and remember to have a emergency winter kit in the car!! If you somehow get stuck with your car in the snow you want to have blankets (emergency blankets with reflective foil that keeps the heat), a shovel, something to mark up the car with so a plove dont drive into you and a basic emergency medic kit. I know this sounds a bit over the top but getting stuck in the snow is something you probably will experience :) good luck haha!

Just seen the part where you show the box containing the snowplow. Please be smart leave that one in the box. I promise you, you don't want an electric one, you'll run over the cable many many times before the end of winter. If you think having a cable on a lawnmower is a pain, well this will be quadruple. If you're going for economy I'd get a used gasoline powered, it'll cost a bit more than the electric one but it'll do the job better too and throw the snow further, won't look so important at the beginning of winter but if you make a narrow wall in the beginning you'll end up with sides so high that the machine won't be able to throw the snow over it.

Kodiak winter boots ( love from Canada)
Wool socks liner, and thin silk socks under the Woolies. It’s the layers that help and trap the heat . Wool insulates ( merino wool comes in different thickness... for pullovers etc.... try a brand called Icebreaker)....even when wet. Make sure boots are not too tight / loose with extra layers .
I don’t know what they do in Sweden.... in Canada with driving , we use a combination of de-icer and road salt . When I lived in the prairies , I always had a bag in my car.... also, the weight of the bags, 50 pounds, helps to stabilise the vehicle ( more weight in the vehicle, helps to slow or prevent some skidding or slides on the road ice whilst driving.)

I grew up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and lived in Superior, Wisconsin for many years. Winters are harsh (or beautiful for those of us who love that sort of thing). The area was settled by Finnish and Swedish immigrants because of the familiar landscape and rich natural resources. Anyway, winters are cold (the coldest was -48 Farenheit), and I’ve always depended on Sorel boots with felt liners to keep my feet warm. I’ve lived in Buffalo, New York for the past 25 years. We get a lot of snow, but, oddly enough, it’s a quite a bit warmer than where I grew up. Good luck to both of you. Like others, I’d like to see some of the community and the locals.

couple things. the paint shouldn’t be put on in anything under 12’C needs to be warmer so just make sure your bottom section that will be in contact with the snow is sorted and you’ll be ok till next year. boots wise get the ones you would of been recommend are the polyver snow boot. just don’t think of anything else. these are made in sweden for swedish weather. you’ll thank me when you’re out in -25 and your warm. good set of thermals is a must do not go out without them until you know how cold real cold is! also cover your face as much as possible. i can’t stress enough that -25 and below hurts your face if there is any kind of wind. go to engelsons for a cover they a few and good prices along with the thermals and coats etc.

I just want to mention some of the most important things and pick up on what others have recommended
    - wool clothes against your skin, then build on that with multiple layers, this includes socks and underwear of youre going to be outside, as its still warming and breathing if wet
    - take it easy, dont breathe in -20 or colder air heavy and use something to cover your mouth and nose, your facial hair will freeze at some point just saying, icy eyelashes here you come
    - take it slow so you dont sweat much
    - buy a shoe heater
    - make sure your shoes has thick real rubber soles as it still has a grip and doesnt become like a slippery rock when freezing, also buy sheepskin-soles and put in the shoes
    - get some real "raggsockor" and slippers, your floors are going to be cold!!
    - overalls are great, especially with alot of insulation
    - make sure the headlight on your car are good enough, you can buy new bulbs at biltema cheap. Can be a good idea to change the "halvljus" to better bulbs and get some extra lights like a led strip for "helljus"
    - car heater is a MUST, both for the engine and inside, like many have said, you can also put a space heater(can find at biltema or jula for example) in the garage and have it on overnight or for a few hours before you use the car, this is also a game changer for getting rid of ice thats stuck everywhere, including around the weels and under the car. You dont need to have it on all the time but its really helpful to defrost, in a way a "kupevärmare" eller "motorvärmare" never could.
    - also good antifreeze, get that checked out
    - you need to "kit" your car with candles, lighter, rexflexes, warm clothes like a pair of "täckbyxor", blankets and stuff like that incase you get stuck somewhere
    - make sure you have lights outside, i cannot stress this enough, when its dark almost 24/7 you need lights outside, around the shed where you get wood, to the garage, anywhere you need to go basiclly
    - headlamps"pannlampa" is great instead of a "ficklampa", you just strap it to your head and have your hands free
-make sure you get some good gloves, hestra have some good stuff,
    - natural fibers and material is your friends, you can even put sheepskin on your seats in the car and it will never get that freezing leather feel, this works inside too on your couch and so on, i know they sell it at rusta for example but im sure you can find some online or at blocket
    - get yourself a "snösläde" its a great addition to the snowplow and you can also use it to drag firewood from the shed to the house, with very little effort. just drag it behind you instead of pushing it infront of you
    - like earlier comments, make sure you have more than one pair of clothes and stuff you need, things will get wet
    - blocket, facebook marketplace, second hand shops are great for finding stuff you need, not just clothes, anything really so check there first, things dont have to be new to work great. and its alot less expensive
    - try to mentally prepare yourself for the darkness, its really hard when you have never lived in it but it takes a toll on your mental health, it really does. try to go out every day during daylight just for a short time to get some light in you and make sure you have good lights outside and inside, make it cozy. candles helps, Its hard to explain the feeling you get when its dark so many hours in the day and the sun goes down soooo fast. its nothing like now with long beautiful sunsets, its just gone like poof and its completely dark. i can see how much you have been thinking about the temperatures and the snow which is great, youre doing amazing i just want you to think about this also so it doesnt hit you in the face.
    - cute sleepwear can be something fun in all of this cold winter, also cute slippers
    - a warm enough duvet for the bed so youre not cold at night
    - when christmas comes around, check out second hand shops for decorations, they usually have soooo much very cheap.
    - "fodrade gummistövlar" is a winner, also you can always put in an extra warm sole
    - dont run outside when it starts to get real cold, its painful af and your lungs will take a beating, also "reflexväst", there are some cool jackets and hats that are all reflex, check that out
    - winter tights is a thing, like training tights but with warm thick isolation, thats great
    - other than all this just try to enjoy it, its an unique experience to live so far north with all that comes with, and it isnt forever, try to make the best of it.
    - like another comment said, rugs, rugs, rugs, you can layer then on top of each other, really great for the bedroom and bathroom, anywhere really
    - also when the roads starts to get icy and snowy try to be out and testdrive, before it gets real bad, and its going to get real bad, slow and steady wins this race. when your on ice and snow you need to make sure you have alot of space between cars and turn your weels slow when you want to get going and its slippery so the dubs get a chance to grip, maybe try to watch some vidoes on winter driving as it is so different. also try to avoind slamming on the breaks if possible, youre going to slide and maybe get "sladd" and lose control
    - swedish winter brands for clothes (and other stuff) are great, they are made for these conditions and perform very well, a few are fjällräven, helly hansen, haglöfs, hestra, icebug(great shoes and gripstuff), salomon.
Hope this helps, im sure i have forgotten something but there are many other helpful comments too, youre doing great!!

Not sure if you can get them in Sweden, but in Canada, we use Sorel boots a lot. They have various types, but I'm guessing that you'll need ones to -40 at least. Also, don't forget to get tall boots, as shorter ones aren't as warm as you'll have very deep snow. Also, thermals, ski pants and you might also need balaclavas. Outer wear all needs to be waterproof as well as insulated to the extreme temperatures that your region has. Check the historical temperatures online. In Canada, we're preparing for a snowing than usual Winter, so checking these reports is important. I'm a Brit who moved to Canada more than 30 years ago and I found the Winters shockingly cold at first, as in unimaginable. Lots of light layers will be your friend, plus I second the need for a block heater in your car. You'll be lost without one. I wish you all the luck and try to make the most out of the cold weather and get outside as much as possible. With the right gear, you'll be sailing! xox

Wool. Lots of wool and silk. I was a little surprised to think of Timberlines as winter boots. They are great boots and my absolute favorite hiking boots. I just never thought of them as winter boots. Waterproof them and they will probably make a good winter boot. My current winter boot, long may they stay, is a pair of U.S.Army issue Polartec lace up boot. They are subzero Fahrenheit and should be fine. The biggest thing that you need to insure is that you stay dry. A little snow melt that seeps into your boots could cause some serious injury. But this is why I say that you want to get as much wool as you can. Felted wool is about 98% waterproof and is the only fibre that I am aware of that will remain at body temperature when wet. Wool socks, wool jumpers and wool hats. Thermal under garments. If you can get your hands on some silk long johns and pass them by, I will call you crazy. If you find some that you don't want, I will transfer the funds+ immediately so that you can get them for me. Very comfortable and very warm. Not silk blend, not wool blend although I would bet a wool silk blend would be okay. Not sure that they would be water tight, though. North face or Duck boots are good winter boots. But if you waterproof your Timber lines, they should be fine. You can buy a jar of waterproof in a place where you can buy shoes there but you can also buy it on Amazon. Paint the entire boot, making sure that you got every single mm. Pay special attention to the seams and where the shoe is sewn onto the sole. Don't forget about the tongue of the boot, paint it, too. Also, when you put your boots on, make sure that the tongue is pulled all the way up and spread flat to seal the boot and no water trickles in at your laces. With several layers and at least one layer of wool, wool socks and waterproofed boots, closed collars, scarves, hats and good waterproof gloves that seal the wind and wet away from your skin and a good pair of snow shades and you should be fine. Don't wear your cold gear in the house before you go out (sweat means you are wet before you even walk out the door). Snow shades help avoid snow blindness. Always keep extra lanterns, flashlights, beeswax candles (well, paraffin is also fine), extra lantern oil, a water kettle that can heat water on the fire place (vs plastic electric tea kettles), oats, grains, rice, peanut butter and some water on hand. Don't panic about the water, though better to have some. I have known of people thinking they didn't have water when trapped in a snowstorm when snow melts. Just make sure you get snow that hasn't been walked on, or peed on, and don't scoop the snow all the way to the ground. Break off the top inch of ice/snow and scoop the snow under that layer. The first good snow won't pack well but melts just fine.
There are plastic sheets that you can tape over the window frame and windows that completely covers the window drafts. Then you blow dry them and the plastic shrinks tight becoming as transparent as glass and creating an air pocket between the window glass and the room, eliminating the heat sink that windows can be. Toasty! My house is always much warmer when I do that, even with newer housing and double panes. I do it when the winter is expected to be especially cold, like Sweden. We routinely sit at -10 Fahrenheit which is -23 Celsius during the winter which is probably not as cold as Northern Sweden. Let me check. Huh! On average, it doesn't get as cold in Lapland because of the Gulf Stream. Who knew? You get back to us on that but, if it's true then the suggestions above should be fine. Odd! I am having trouble believing that!
Put a couple of bags of kitty litter in the boot of the car. Sprinkle a layer on the ground in front of and behind your tires for traction if you find yourself getting stuck on ice. If you have a bit of an uphill slope on your driveway, you can sprinkle it there, too. But when it snows again you will have to do it again. The snow tires will go a long way in keeping you out of trouble. If you buy chains, put them on a few times before you need them. Just to practice. Nothing worse than needing them and being unable to put them on. Been there, done that. Start your car during the warmest part of the day (garage door open please!) each day when you are at home. Let it run long enough to warm up. Keep an extra can of gas in the garage and fill your tank every time you go into town. Not only do yyou want enough gas on hand but ththe weight of a full tank is better for maintaining good traction. When I was young, my father put a lightbulb plugged into a long power cord to keep the engine from freezing on really cold nights. I don't see people doing that anymore.
I don't know if you are still reading but I can't think of anything else at the moment. This is probably more information than you wanted but I started on wool and found myself yammering on. 🤐
