- This place can really be feast or famine, just like a lot of dams around the country. BUT, when it's good, it can be REALLY good!

I live in Pella and I’m glad you had a great time down at Lake Red Rock
DUDE SWEEEEET ROD!!! ITS GOT A GREAT BEND TO IT AND BACKBONE!!! NICE JOB!!!
It was a fun rig to build😁
WHAT'S UP DUDE?? FOUND THE VIDEO WITH THE ROD I WAS TALKING ABOUT THAT I MESSAGED YOU ABOUT YESTERDAY... I LOVE THAT ROD!!! ALSO I FOUND THOSE HOOK PULLER OUTERS... THE TOOTHPICK!!! THANKS A BUNCH!!!! 🤙🤙🤙
Looks like the neighbors are tired of netting your fish if you're just going to release them, but in my opinion we need more fishermen like you.
I understand haha. Thank you for the kind words!
Thsts pretty badass catching fish on lures and rods you built yourself. That rod is sick!..awesome wipers dude!
I've built a couple of my rods. It is very rewarding to catch fish on a rod you built yourself.
Thanks man. It definitely makes the whole experience feel a lot cooler!
"I built it this winter specifically for this". Whelp if this was your first build, welcome to a new addiction.
Its probably around #50. You're right about it being an addiction!
People build fishing poles themselves?
Oh yeah, I started with fly rods !
Dude! You caught Nessie with that Drastic Plastic!!
They seem to work perty good😁
Good time right there👍
I can't complain sir!
Love it!
Dude you kind of sound like Paul Rudd lol
That had to have been at least 30 plus. The pole you made is very similar to my river pole for big striper. 9 foot penn with a fierce 3 6000 reel. I call it my winch on a stick. Love your videos!!
I dont know if she went 30, but she was definitely fun. Yeah your rig sounds like the big brother of mine haha
Absolute freakin hammer man!
Thanks Gary!
Is that the new Whiskers Seeker medium action prototype Rod? 🤔
Negative, just one I built this winter for hybrids and float fishing for channel cats.
River Certified got it thank you for the response
Judging from the scenery, trees having no leaves, this seems to be like late Falls or early Spring.
When's flathead season? Great fish bud!
Long story, I had a shot at one on Tues, but he never got the hook sadly. Editing that video today!
I love watching you knock em dead out there in central iowa. I live in the same area and rarely get a chance to get out and fish like you do, with even half the luck!
Fishing a lot helps ya stay on the bite for sure. Good luck when you get out there!
The The big fish tell the other fish what lure is safe to bite so they can be released 🤣
Thats a solid evolutionary strategy 😆
Do you know if it’s open.. last I knew dnr closed all recreational areas.
Yeah, they never closed it.
jerry kernes campgrounds are going to be open by Friday May 8. But only for rv’s that have their own bathrooms.
River Certified thank you!! Went to saylorville spillway and the road to the parking was closed. Keep the videos coming and can’t hardly wait for some more flatheads vids
Do you live in Iowa then?
Try cat fishing art below the dam at red rock
Good idea
There is a lot of catfish there
I bet them guys was pissed you sending them Mondo's back to the wild
I hope not, considering I gave him one of my jigs.
What dam is that
I see ur in Pella
Yo I want ur rod bad ass lol
It does the job, and does it well😁
@@RiverCertified I bet if u made more an sold them u can make profit cuz I sure in the hell would buy one lol hell of a sandbass rod
You are like the 6th person I’ve heard breaking cherry rods I have broke two.. odd
Man you tour those hybrids up! I really like that spot you were fishing at! Great video as always keep on doing your thing big dog!
It was a fun day! Glad you enjoyed the video!
my asian buddies hate when i throw them back lol
Asians overfish Iowa
SPF 50 is my life now. I always forget I'm a redhead the first time
Haha at least I'm not the only one!
Is this a God dam?
There is giant Flatheads right above the Dam in about 50ft of water
Sorry Spencer, can't finish watching your video...went to Iowa city last week and hooked up on some big ones! And the fight was unbelievable OMG !!!! And I want more 😫 it's keep calling me. Fyi had River Certified hoodie on the whole weekend.
They're awesome dude, definitely one of my favorites! Really appreciate you being all river certified and stuff😁
I live in Des Moines Iowa and have never river fished. I have not fished sense 2001 I just recently started fishing for crappie. Are those fish good eating. I was thinking about fishing the raccoon or Des Moines River
They are alright to eat. I like crappie and walleye quite a bit better, but that's just me. If you want wipers, I'd stick to the des moines river. Seems to have more in it than the raccoon.
Awesome episode!! My grandpa used to always say “heeeeeeeerre they come” when my cousin and I would swarm in to his spot when he was catching and we weren’t haha
That's awesome. Fishing with grandpa was always my favorite. I cherish those memories.
would you call your peen fierce smooth ? i have several and my 3000 size is geery feeling and not near as smooth as my others .thanks for the videos by the way . i realy like the fact you target different species and different methods ov fishing .
So far so good for mine. I have one that is 12 years old. Definitely doesn't feel new, but is still kicking butt. Glad you enjoy the videos! I like fishing for anything that pulls hard.
I found this channel a week ago and I swear I'm addicted to wanting to start catfishing now and hitting up every spillway in America!
" I don't trust these people" Hahaha good one, I wouldn't either with a camera set up that far from me. Looks like a spot where old fat white guys wouldn't be welcome. Lol Nice wiper!
Haha im sure you'd find a spot. Thanks!
That was fun to watch man.
👍👍👍
Me & my wife enjoy all your videos.
So if you see that Fey liked your video that's us in our livingroom usually after dinner.
Any way great job bud.
That's awesome you both enjoy watching them! I really appreciate it!
Glad you weren't a complete ass to those guys like a lot of people would have been sad to say.... selflessness goes a long way....
I do my best. Im not perfect, but I try.
That was pretty funny to see that guy come fish right next to you. I guess you were just doing that good.
He moved so I could chase that fish, so I can't discredit him too much haha
But why kill all them fish. Tell them buddies about catch and release.
I guess its their choice. They are in their legal right.
Why do tail waters and spillways always have a ton of hybrids and strippers? Never understood that.
Lots of shad would be my guess. And more stable water temps
I was just fishing there yesterday it’s a good spot, Nice videos man keep up the good work!!!
Glad ya enjoyed it dude!
Looks like a blast. Can't wait to get back there. Congrats on some great fish. Digging the new rod and homemade tackle.
It was a dang good day. Good luck when you do! I love tackle crafting!
Pandemic is going on is iowa red rock still open we were thinking to go on saturday 2 days near memorial day and we wanted to see if its still open
I think it's still open. Good luck dude!
Catfish tournament on the iowa river by belle plaine July 11 to 12 if you fish tournaments
Appreciate you letting me know!
Man your vids are great! Love how people are happy till they don't get your fish lol!
Glad you like them! Ya can't please everyone I guess haha
Well played putting them all back especially the one where the dude is crowding you and asks if you're keeping it. Nope....kerplunk Freaking funny.
It wasn't meant to be condescending to anyone there, I just don't like to see bigger fish get killed. Just me.
Swear those are my favorite eating fish! They are so damn good and a blast to catch.
I like em, but I'm partial to walleyes personally. They make a fine fish taco though.
@@RiverCertified I've been fishing there a lot but I couldn't catch those kind. When exactly the best time for this kinds if you don't mind.
if you switch to 50 pound power pro line for that surf rod you would get a lot better casting distance ,lust wear a golf glove on the hand you hold the line for casting.you can also add an egg sinker above the swivel that your leader is tied to . we fish this way for stripe bass below pickwick dam ,and catch a bunch fishing the boils below the dam.
Even with only one ounce jigs? I've thought about that, I just figured lighter line would mean more distance.
@@RiverCertified how many lb of live you using
@@RiverCertified the power pro is so slick it shoots through the line guides and does not have the memory spiral going out that mono does. 50 pound power pro only has the diameter of about 6 pound test, you will like it.
Wow! you are fortunate to have such diversified fishing in your area. Awesome video again. Thanks for sharing and making me jealous again!
I put some miles on the truck to do it, but its what I like to do. Glad you enjoyed it!
What dam is that? I need to go ASAP
I think it is red rock
What blank is that spend? Trying to decide on a blank for a new striper rod since catfishing sucks around here anymore
Its just the 9' MH mudhole surf blank. It probably would make a decent striper rod. Probably would get the 10 footer for your spillways though
@@RiverCertified appreciate it
Bro that cooler look crazy. Love the video. thanks for the inspiration to keep fishing for monsters.
Glad you enjoy the videos dude!
That cooler was ridiculous. How long is your surf rod? I've been wanting to get one for this giant ass reel that I won lol. Not jealous of those toads you caught or anything btw.
Its a 9 footer. It was my lucky day😁
I just bought half ounce, 3/4 ounce, and ounce bucktails, same color. I also bought a penn battle 3 high speed reel and a penn 9' surf rod for my reel. I'm hoping to hit the Ohio River up and get out there in the swift current and get on them giant hybrids.
We used to have Philippino neighbors. Those folks loved fishing and as a kid took me out quite a few times! learned a lot and ate a lot of good food too
Sounds like they made your childhood just a little more awesome!
@@RiverCertified no doubt man
Bro what do you use for catfish in this corny state ? I cannot catch catfish in the dmi river although I do go to yellow banks and it seems not many catch cats there… nice vid though cool to see someone fishing from your state
Those Hmong guy video they didn’t catch any big one like that video I just sent you @11:40. 10lb plus is like that!
Slob! I need to get in on some of that wiper action this summer.
Hope you do cuz theyre a blast!
Hey what dam is this? I’m from Iowa and can’t find any good hybrid fishing right now
kyle lake I’m guessing, if I remember right, that’s the dam at red rock
Matthew Hofbauer yea it is
Y tell him ur giving away the spots
Hey Spencer. Great Fish and video again man! Quick question. How do you like those Penns? I run Stradic HG's right now (for King Salmon) and they are bullet proof BUT I'd like to buy American. I have a pair of Penn Squals but they are not as good as my Abu Pro Rockets (for catfish). This is making me question a purchase. I was thinking of pulling the trigger on an AVET bait caster for the same reason (even thought it's over kill) but the high dollar price and the fact they are NOT level winds are making me shy away. Answer if ya got time buddy ;) Anyway, Happy Weekend once again!
Thanks Mark! I love Penn battles for the money, but the Fierce is a big step down from a Stradic. Since Pure Fishing took over Penn, I don't believe they are American made anymore anyway. I've fished with Avets in the surf. The sxj model is definitely not overkill, and is a badass little reel. Siegler would be another one to look into. Hope that helps!
@@RiverCertified Thanks Buddy it sure did!
Fucken beautiful rod man. Brad from Ladner British Columbia.
Home of the Fraser River
Very kind words sir! You have a beautiful landscape and excellent fishing up there!
I LOVE wiper fishing here in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. By the best place but at the local dam I love wading out and fishing in the current below the only gate that’s always open. They’re usually 2-5lbs so it’s not as fun but it’s still fun. At the same lakes dock last two months using a small balloon as a bobber ( which in calm wind you can see the vibrations of the baitfish through the ripples of the balloon) using a baitfish with as little weight as possible they will SMASH the bait. Seen at least three rods taken in the water and many more so close to be taken out. It’s a lot of fun, but soon I hope to go to either Ft.Gibson dam or Kaw dam or even Lake Texoma for bigger ones.
That sounds awesome dude. Good luck if you travel. I used to fish ft. Gibson a lot. Awesome spill way!
Nice fish and Drastic Plastic has some very nice baits
Thank you sir. Agreed, they make some great baits!
Dude my heart was pumping that whole fight....good stuff brother
It was a whole bunch of fun dude!
Nice! You was fishing next to Laotians. Not surprised for them to ask what your catching fish on. I needs to start using my surf rod. I’m the same way as you when I’m out of jigs. Make up my own weights with split shots or small sinkers lol
I wasn't getting the distance I wanted out of it, just gotta refine a few things. Tackle tinkering is the best!
This is River Rat billy, I'd still help net your fish for you even if you didn't give them to me..awesome fishing , I hope you catch a Giant too!
You are obviously an awesome individual 😁 thank you!
When Flathead fishing today with some bluegills made as flapper bait. No luck except channels. Talk to the DNR who was shocking on the Cedar River they didn't not roll up any flatheads
Still early, but it is starting. I had one spit the bait a few days ago, but I was in Southern Iowa. Still bitter about missing that fish.
So jelly.
Here on the Ohio the best place for me to have a shot at a beefcake like that is under 12-15 feet of water right now.
Also I have to give you a hat tip sir. Picked up a Whiskerseeker rod and it has completely replaced all my kitty cat rods.
Might be worth trying a creek mouth close to that are for them right now if you got super raging water. That's where I'd start anyway. Glad you like the whiskerseekers. Ain't no other cat rod quite like em.
If you continue fishing with that color pattern on the first jig try adding a white KI tech ribbed swimbait. I've caught some of my biggest wipers on that combo except I use 1/2 oz banana jig.
Thanks for the tip!
We catch these in Alabama but we definitely don’t use that light of line. I moved to Florida and everyone is about fishing with light tackle and I’m the opposite I want the dam fish on the bank.
Its mainly to increase casting distance
Lol!!! My hands were sweating. You were juiced. As you should of been. Amazing day. The huge one fought like a champ. Good job. Today was a GOOD day.
I get excited about those things too😁 Glad you enjoyed the videos!
7:50 Did you check your hook after you where snaged right before that fish ?
I cant remember honestly
U know u can use a float to avoid rocks old fishing bottom debris catch just as many fish but u need bigger tackle like big surf rods and maybe land bigger fish guys
Yeah, I used to do that down in Oklahoma. It takes a lot of the fight out of it when you hook one though. I'll sacrifice a few more jigs for that.
You quit getting help because you didn't give the nfish to the Asian dude. I have a great Asian friend that I fish with and he pouts a bit if I don't give him my fish!
Nice catches! The biggest stripper I’ve seen come out of the dam weighed out to 17 pounds
I've never seen one that big, but I've heard from others they're down there. Hopefully I can catch one like that someday.
I wish they had fish like that in ohio..lol. my biggest fish I ever got is about 8 lbs. I am handicap now so couldn't fish like you do.
I've heard good things about hybrids on the Ohio. Good luck sir!
I love this one it’s very much like stripper fishing in the California delta when I was a kid.
Man sweet video bro looking forward to more there nothing better to do in this covid 19 world right now 👍
I'm glad I can keep you entertained!
Great video, Spencer! Lots of action at Red Rock Dam!
A whole lot of fun!
U just gave away the spot
That place looks very familiar are you in Florida fishing in sneads that looks just like the dam I fish at
Hi I went fishing the other day and got some bluegill I froze them there in a baggie for cut bait when me and my dad go crappie fishing I’ll let you know if I catch any catfish. Thanks
Good luck dude! I look forward to it!
I have fished Wapello and Rathburn the Mississippi and the Rock river really miss the midwest. Love your hat.
It definitely has its perks. Go Cubs!
Going to do some fishing today with a buddy, debating on going to lake wapello, Rathbun or red rock. Decisions decisions!
Thats a big area! Good luck wherever you end up!
Maaaan... I miss fishing damns like that.. oh wanted to give ya some advice... dip your pliers in the rubber coating dip stuff... that way you dont scratch or nick your hook and make it weaker. I can not stand when people get up your ass when your catching fish.. I'd be telling that guy to get the hell away from me..
Cool idea. Does it make it tough to cut line with the cutters though? I don't get worked up over people fishing close to me, except right now I guess haha
@@RiverCertified just dip right before the cutters and you'll be good.. I mean that guy was right in your back pocket.. I was talking shit to the video...lol
They have to be one of the greatest fish in America. There is no doubt in my mind I would have fell in the river where you were fishing.
Gotta give yourself a little more credit haha. I agree on them being the greatest fish in America. I can't get enough of them. Been tough this year with low water to find them.
If you could tag me on this comment, but in what month of the year we’re you fishing out there!
Great catches man. I like that hairy jig you were throwing.
Thanks dude! Its fun to make em too!
So which model of whitebass do you guys have in the Iowa dams? 😊
Do you ever bass fish? I'm a bit of a rookie myself but I'm probably at around 40 largies on the year so far
Not much. I do chase smallmouth tho, especially in the fall
I fish at this place since the 80s.
Where is this at?
New rod looks like a winner! What a test on its 1st outing!! Some monster hybrids you got out there, looks like a blast!👍 Tight lines!!
I really like it so far. Couldn't have asked for a better first outing! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Great videos! Are those penn reels you’re using? Drag sounds way better than Stradic.
Glad ya like em! Yeah, I'm a penn reel fan. Love the Fierce and the Battle. Shimano makes a great reel too. Im just too cheap haha
😂 cramped right. We got a couple cramps at barkley skippy fishing. the struggle is real.
When the fish get biting, people get excited. I'm no different haha
@@RiverCertified i hear ya there man .
Seems like going at that season in May is the best time huh? Awesome! Thanks for the helpful info! Going Labor Day weekend.
May is good depending on the water level. Bring your top waters for labor day. Good luck!
I really hope we can see the water levels that high again soon! Another great video at the ole hidden gem!!
I hope so too! Looks like the recent rain helped a little.
Catching those big stripers sure looks like a lot of fun nice Change-Up from 40 lb flat heads
Gotta agreed 💯! The fall bite on them should be going soon too!
Those r ur fish bud! No apologies to anyone lol
Haha I just try to be considerate to all
@@RiverCertified thats why ur legendary!!
i think they got tired of helping you why they fish to take home and you fish to release them
Cool vid. One ounce gitsit jigs tipped with x-large shiner works good as well. I use my grandmothers recipe for canned carp for these. Man is it good to open a pint up with some crackers in December. I'll eat the whole jar lol. I'm gonna can alot fish this year including carp. They are great too. You any wanna think about it. Only meat left in the stores around here is chicken. Keep your powder dry young man 💪🙏.
Is there anything special you do to keep the shiner on when you have to cast far? They seem to fly off for me. I've never canned anything, but really enjoy pickled fish. Thanks for watching sir! I had some fun in your neck of the woods the other day. Should have had my first flathead of the year, but that's another story.
@@RiverCertified when u hook them use large hoop jigs and hook them from the bottom up so the hook comes out right behind their head. A gitsit jig is weighted in a way that it has a flat bottom and when on bottom it holds the hook part up at about a 45 degree angle so your shinner is tail up when hooked that way. Works good in current.
What rod blank is that?
A mudhole 9' medium surf blank. Maybe the MH. Cant remember for sure. Its rated for 1-4 oz
i was kayak trolling the fox and my hook bent as i got a 1-2 minute fighter into the boat.
Very nice!
