Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 січ 2025
- Once you have fiber glassed over your plywood, you NEED to seal it with gelcoat! Gelcoat not only makes your fiber glass work look better, it seals and creates a water barrier for your raw Fiber glass. This step is very important and should not be skipped! It is not hard to work with gelcoat, you just need to understand the basics. In this video I will show you how we have been gel coating over fiber glass for years in our families Boat shop. Follow along step by step, this is a full-length video with no details left out. If you find this video helpful, please remember to subscribe, like comment, and share! Thanks for watching! #boat #fiberglass #gelcoat #boatrenovation

I watch this channel so I know how to repair the gelcoat on my RV. Good channel. Easy to understand.
I appreciate you watching and commenting! I hope you find what you need to get those repairs done.
Great video resource! I picked up a 14' 1976 sears Ted Williams gamefisher . Got my fiberglass warehouse order on the way ( thanks for the discount code saved me $60) gonna make a saltwater polling skiff out of it.
That sounds like a fun project! I'm glad the video was helpful.
Thank you for this video! I am restoring a small 13' Gheenoe and was debating between paint and gelcoat, but now I think I know enough to go with the gelcoat.
Glad to hear that the video helped you decide! Thanks for watching!
These videos have helped me so much in my boat rebuild project. Thank you so much Joe!!
Love your channel just a dy hack on your green acetone bottle. You can use the caps from the fiberglass warehouse to put over the top to keep it from evaporating or spill it out when it is dumped over thanks, Captain Scott.
Thanks for another great video. We are getting ready to re-gelcoat a boat, so the content is very much appreciated!
Love your videos! I worked with fiberglass years ago, but never did any marine fiberglass work. Your videos have given me the encouragement to rebuild my 1994 SeaCat SL1 after finding some cracks and bad wood.
Wow, thanks! I'm glad to hear that the videos are giving you the confidence to take on your seacat rebuild!
I love what you are showing us, I’m continually learning something new
Wow, thanks! Glad to hear that you are enjoying the channel!
Total Boat, I use Jamestown Distributors for that brand. They are great to work with, super fast shipping!
66.2K 🎉 Congratulations to you and Logan! Great video
Haha, yep!! Thanks so much! We really appreciate everyone's support of the channel and the work that we are doing, and we look forward to hitting 100k!
The channel she have way more then 66.2k . Hope it goes to 100k soon
Always had a fear of gelcoat for some strange reason, probably not quite understanding it well enough. You have educated me through that fear. Great demonstration and educational video, Thank you Capt. Joe
I'm glad to hear that the videos have given you a better understanding and more confidence when it comes to gelcoat work! I appreciate the feedback, and you taking the time to watch and comment!
CFYA comment for youtube analytics. Great job, lots of information.
Thanks for watching, I appreciate the feedback!
Always look forward to the Fishbump videos. Another good one Capt
Videos are amazing Joe, really appreciate them. Working on a 14ft flats boat here in Australia, building a casting deck front and back and also new gel coat paint for the hull
Sounds like a great project! Thanks for watching all the way from Australia, and keep us updated on the build!
Mate thanks for refreshing aspects on Gelcoat- about to DYI my 15Ft down under
Thank you Captain Joe and Logan, always very good learning lessons and content to look back on for projects, repairs.
Thank you for the video Captain Joe.
Great demonstration of different ways to apply gelcoat. One question: what happens if multiple layers of waxed gelcoat are applied with sanding between.
Thanks, glad you are enjoying the videos! Using waxed gelcoat for multiple coats can work, but you do have to be sure that you remove any wax by sanding and wipedown between each coat, or else the following coats may not bond properly. I hope this helps and I appreciate you watching!
Great job of not only explaining but showing how to use gelcoat. A big advantage of using unwaxed gelcoat is that it can be recoated without sanding and the wax can be add in the final coat or use PVA to cover it. On a rough textured surface, it would require a lot of sanding of the gelcoat had wax been in the mixture.
What is the shelf life of gelcoat and for resin?
Gel coat typically last 6 months to a year if kept in a cool, dry location. (But I have seen it last longer). For resins, ISO is the longest lasting. It typically lasts a year or longer. Ortho resins, 6 month to a year (or longer sometimes). Vinyl Ester is the the one resin you need to be careful with. VE starts to lose its promotion after about 3 months. But not all is lost. If you mix in new resin with the old (1 quart of new to a gallon of old), it will re-promote it. But if it solid or jelly-like, it is no good.
Your Dad called it „Beautymess „ And so I asked the Translator , if we have a nearly nice Word in Germany ? Yes : „SCHÖNHEITSCHAOS“. thank you for that nice Word and a happy new year 2025
Oh wow, very interesting! Thanks for the translation and for watching all of the way from Germany 🇩🇪!
Capt Joe fish bump family Wow! Nice looking spray up! Brother Joe you can tell a professional verses Diyer when I get done gel coating there is more on me than on the work piece Lol! Happy New Year fish bump family Thanks again for another great video you have my attention!
Haha, yep! Nobody's perfect! I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Another excellent video! Your content is very helpful, especially to us DIYers. I took on the complete replacement of the stringer system and floor in my 20' Malibu Sunsetter (Center Engine Ski boat). I fixed a long crack in the hull and will be doing some fairly serious amount of gelcoat repair. If you have anything on color matching gelcoat, I will look for it.
Hey Nathan, this is Dallin from Fiberglass Warehouse. We can match your gel coat. The easiest way is to go down to Sherwin Williams and find the color that most closely matches that color you are looking for. Give us the code, and we can make gel coat in that color.
Great video Captain Joe. What are your thoughts on paint and the different types of paints. Second to that your thoughts on the pros and cons of paint verses Gelcoat. I would love to hear your take on it. Keep them coming Sir, love you videos!
Thanks, I'm glad you are enjoying the videos! I appreciate the paint verses gelcoat video suggestion. I will keep that in mind for a future episode.
Another great video!
A Binks 2001! I have a few thousand hours using one of those painting Waverunners at Yamaha!
While watching I was wondering about pot life however you answered that, about 15 minutes. With the waxed gel-coat, how long will it take to cure out?
One tip - check out DJI mini mic’s they are wireless and can adapt to most phones or cameras, all for about $160!
Looking good 👍
Thanks for the thumbs up! Appreciate you watching!
Restoring a 1977 Sea Ray SR V-200
Happy New year
Great video. So even with MEKP, the non wax gel coat won’t fully garden unless you put a wax surface on top of it?
Thanks! Yes, the non waxed gelcoat will remain tacky or sticky for quite some time, certainly days and even weeks or more if it isn't overcoated with waxed gelcoat, pva, or a plastic or wax film. I will have episode 2 of the series coming out tomorrow, maybe it will help answer more of your questions. I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Awesome video!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Joe, thanks another great informational video! By the way, “Buskens” having Dutch or Flemish ancestors? Fairly common surname here in the Netherlands. I was uncertain making my own flares for my campervan since they are just ridiculously expensive for what it is, now I take that bridge and will make them myself! Best regards, Albert
You are very welcome! I'm glad to hear that the videos have given you some inspiration for your camper van flares. That's interesting to hear that Buskens is a fairly common name in your part of the world! Our families heritage is German, and the original spelling was something like Buusken, or I have heard maybe von Buusken. Thanks so much for watching all of the way from the Netherlands 🇳🇱!
Hi Joe, your content has been very helpful, love your channel. I’ve a question regarding gel coat spray guns, on your hard top build you used a dump gun, is this gun GX4 4.8mm better? Is it for a different purpose? Is it for a finishing waxed gel coat where as the dump gun was for just delivering product to be glassed over??? Cheers from Australia
Fantastic, glad to hear that you are enjoying the channel! The Dump gun is fine for spraying very thick materials, like the orange tooling gelcoat into a mold. Outside of that, the gx4 gelcoater with the 4.8 mm tip is absolutely the way to go. I hope this helps, and I appreciate you watching all of the way from Australia 🇦🇺!
It looks like you don't get a lot of over spay out of that gun. I get a lot of mist when spraying Gelcoat with a paint gun. How much does it accually reduce the over spray with the larger tip?... Looking foward to the second half of this video.
Overspray is pretty minimal with the Gelcoater. It seems that the 4.8 mm tip does a better job of delivering material, without the need of much higher air pressure. I would recommend one for anybody that plans on spraying gelcoat, or high build primers, especially for the price point! Thanks for watching!
Can you explain what and why you would use durtec? Can you use on epoxy?
i have a bayliner 3870 1987 has lots of chips and cracks i need to learn how to fix them one at a time and how to tint to color match so i can do it over time
Capt. Joe, I know you have other videos showing gelcoat repair, but adding onto this question, I have a 20 year old white boat with gelcoat that has yellowed - any tips on color matching?
@@MarkR-n3p Great question. Getting a match to the original color won't help you. At Fiberglass Warehouse, we recommend heading down to Sherwin Williams and finding the color code that most closely matches, then giving us a call. We can match the Sherwin Williams code.
Thoughts on PVA as skin to cure?
Also long term storage on MEKP in large amounts like the gallon size you use?
I’ve been storing mine in a fridge turned up on temp to say 50* or so.
When will you be installing the top on the boat
I do have a question ❓ I have a 69 20ft TollyCraft and I am going to put a fuel tank between the stringers and one option is building a custom aluminum tank but I am thinking about just building in a fiberglass tank , is that doable for gasoline, what resin should be used and should it be gel coated ? A list of any special materials for doing it would be great , thanks and I love watching your diy videos
Vinyl Ester is the most corrosive resistant resin.
Thanks, I'm leaning towards building my gas tank out of fiberglass more and more and was concerned about degradation of the tank from gasoline, how about gel coat inside the tank is that ok too? @@FiberglassWarehouse
Regarding the glasskoter rollers, what color of roller do you recommend, red or white?
Do you have any link for the gelcoater gun please?
Thanks you
What is the longest you can leave a coat of gel coat without wax before you add your next coat. Bad weather is coming so I had to pause on gel coating my hull. I may have to wait a few days temps are going below 50 degrees.
This is tricky. You really don't want to wait too long between coats. The biggest reason is contamination. Dust and debris will collect on the tacky surface. With that said, how long it stays tacky varies with temperature and the amount of MEKP you add. You can check if it is still tacky by taking a damp rag with acetone and swipe it over the surface. If it tacks up, you can gel coat without sanding.
Hi, Captin Joe. I've been watching your channel for about a year now, it's very helpful and I always like it. When do you sand the gelcoat? Do you spray 1 coat and sand 1 coat? Or do you apply 3 or 4 coats of gelcoat and then sand??
You want the end result you be around 20 thousandth thick. So, however many layers it takes to get to that thickness. You want the last coat to have wax so it dries tack free so you can sand it.
@@FiberglassWarehouse Thank you very much reply :)
When thinning color matched gelcoat with styrene or clear additive will it alter the color? … Thanks Jay
No it won't. Yup don't want to add more then 10% styrene or if can turn the gel coat yellow. I tell people to not add more than 5% just to be safe. As far as the Air Dry Super Clear, it just adds a glossy finish.
Im 16 and planning on painting over my bout but dont have none of those equipment
You could certainly begin with the small things first. A decent brush and roller can be had for anywhere from 20 to 30 dollars, maybe even less if you catch a sale. Maybe you could pick up a part-time job at a marina or hardware store if you are interested in that kind of work. It sounds like you have an interest in boats, and you are doing your research, which is a great place to start! I wish you all the best, and I appreciate you watching!
@ thank you🙏🏾 by the way i work with boats on a regular basis going back to school tomorrow tho so have to wait till summer
So should you only use wax additives on tbe final coat when putting on 3 or 4 coats ?
That is correct. Only add wax to the last coat.
If you're going to spray at least two layers of gelcoat, do you add the Orca Air Dry Clear to each coat or just the last and thin the prior layers with styrene?
You can add the Orca Air Dry Super Clear to each layer, but you need to be very careful. You have to spray the next layer when you can touch the previous layer and you pull away strings of gel coat. That is when it is ready for another coat. This is a great way to reduce sanding.
I'm hoping to restore a hull that I was gifted.
👍👍👍
Thanks so much!!
Overspray on the 29!🤬
Suggest you don’t need to introduce yourself anymore Joe. Most people get it.
🙄
VERY NICE !
thank you
Great channel and informative one thing I noticed is our gelcoat here in Europe is far thicker and not like that gelcoat that pours out like paint, 👍🏻🇮🇪🚤
Thanks, I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying the channel! That's interesting to hear about the gelcoats' different viscosity overseas. I wonder if all brands would be the same? I know that there can be differences in how some of our products perform. I would imagine you could thin it with a bit of styrene or a clear additive like we show in our videos if those products are available to you. Thanks for sharing your experiences with everyone and for taking the time to watch and comment!
