  • Original airdate: 10/30/2017 | They do a dangerous job; climb poles and use heavy equipment to help restore our power when it’s lost.
They're known as linemen, but not all of them are men.
Kayla Ramsay is a single mom from Kutztown.
Cariana Shultz, the other woman in the lineworker program at Northampton Community College, used to help her father remodel houses.
"Everybody thought I was crazy, but now they get it," said Ramsay.
Meanwhile Shultz says she really like the climbing and being up in the air.
These women are two of just three women to ever graduate from the lineworker program at NCC and, with the donation of a bucket truck from PPL Monday, they will be a step ahead of others training to be lineworkers.
"We're going to have a leg up from going to this class and having a line truck and a bucket truck," said Shultz.
Still Ramsay and Shultz remain focused on overcoming the odds.
"There's not really anything easy about it. There's going to be challenges to face. There's going to be obstacles. It's going to be hard but I feel like the overall reward is worth everything that you put into it," said Ramsay.
"It's a man’s world but women can do it as well," added Shultz.

Unknown. There are very few women who enter this field, but both men and women have to master the skills, so presumably both men and women also fail.

Mostly it’s the companies/schools trying to advertise that they “value diversity”. So the very few women are pressured to take part in interviews, have their pictures taken for articles to “represent”. It’s just a PR dog and pony show.
In reality it can be uncomfortable for the women involved because they just want to work. That’s all.
It truly is a double edged sword. On one hand, yes it encourages young girls to look into skilled labor. On the other hand, you get salty guys who just think you’re a token diversity hire and will dismiss all your hard work.
We don’t want attention. We just want to work.
