I don't think you want to 'lock' internally... if the boat was to sink, you wan't to be able to get out... but you could latch it on the inside so it is easy to open, but only from internal
Simple- at night while tucked safely away inside your sailboat attach a few car batteries to your metal stanchions that surround the perimeter of your boats entrance. Once a potential pirate tries to steal your tasty island treasures they will be zapped falling ever so gently into to sea in which they came. Kinda works like your parents old fashion bug zapper. You might be awoken to bright lights & loud zaps now & then but nothing to worry about. Stay safe!
Get some spearguns. They work even if not loaded. Also they are legal. And intimidating. Also I think you could be pretty good at spearfishing so it's a win win.
What a brilliant story. Isn't it great to know there are decent people out there who look out for others like that. And a great lesson for someone who thinks thieving will solve there problems, to have a second thought... And yes, get an internal locking system...
Very happy to hear you are safe.more than you realize there is lot of piracy on the seas and you will someday encounter what you perceive to be the boat owner when in fact it is a boat thief.many also pretend they are stranded, etc.be vigilant.
That was a frightening thing to listen to, I'm so glad you're OK. Perhaps a can of wasp spray? The kind that shoots a stream 10 feet. It would temporarily blind any attacker. A gun would be out of the question for many countries and many people, understandably so, would not want to carry one on their boat even if they could. Again, so glad you are safe.
Wow Darling awsome video we love you in Oz look faward to seeing you here in the future keep up the great vids a d see you soon we hope!..... stay safe!☺☺☺☺☺
Or spray can of bug spray ...wasp works best.. Works like mace but a lot cheaper and has multiple uses..A shot of wasp/hornet spray in the upper chest works great some of the spray will hit their face and subdue them instantly..Wasp spray shoots a stream about 8/10 ft. so you can stop them before they can get their hands on you..A taser works well also burned to check laws in the area.
"culture" is no excuse for cruelty. There is so much barbarity hiding behind the mask of "culture" (FGM, honour killings, bullfighting, dog fighting, forced marriages, animal cruelty, species reduction, etc,) that you should not be afraid to "fault" them when you see it, regardless of culture. Great video Holly, from another single-hander :)
Cool story .. and do you wear your contacts within dive mask when snorkeling? .. or is there a prescription dive mask available? .. I've always wondered about that .. Cheers
In 2007 I was on at Lagoon 440 catamaran doing a delivery from Fort Lauderdale Florida to North Shore Haleiwa Oahu Hawaii we were at Colon Panama and we went out for something to eat and the local guide took us to a restaurant that served turtle I didn't know it at the time so I ate some of the endangered species I have to say it wasn't my favorite but I really don't feel guilty I saw so many turtles even though I do know now what to expect in the future and I won't be doing the same
Patrick Childress sailing on UA-cam had a good feed on boat defense his ideas were good but the suggestions were super inonvating. A co2 fire extinguisher refilled with cayenne pepper my hmm road ended me at a website that was selling 12v electric anti bear fencing. The grounding on a boat might be complicated. It is sold for hunters and hikers. That said there are very real good ideas in that feed. Not the one where is shooting a flare a newer one in south Africa.
Dealings w/ pirates or criminals at sea is dangerous cruisers predicament....cruising crews are your other eyeballs and ears, hands and protectors.... well worth their passage.
Actually, Sea Turtles are now Protected by Law in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. If you see anyone capturing them, please report it to the Authorities. Glad you're safe from all the commotion.
@@rwess I live on Bequia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines all throughout the year and the only controversial topic that is still allowed is Whaling. Bequia is allowed to catch 4 Humpback Whales per Year. Sea Turtles are not allowed anymore. As for Yacht Security, just stay cautious, just like if you're anywhere else, Canouan is more known to have thieves boarding your boat late at night than other Grenadines Islands.
I was thinking bear spray as well. Most (non-U.S.A.) countries do NOT allow visitors to have guns. You have to declare this point when you check in after quarantine. So I think at least with bear spray you would have like a 25-30 foot spraying range, (depending on wind direction), and seeing someone try to swim away after they have been sprayed with pepper/bear spray would totally be AWESOME, and for sure go viral, LOL So there is that too. BONUS!!!!!!!
I know people keep saying bear spray but pepper spray is actually more hurtful. Bear spray is a lower concentrate so the bear is agitated enough to run but not hurt so much as to feel the need to defend itself. When I bought some for myself I looked it up. Get long range pepper spray and some close range stuff as well. The gel stuff can be ripped off with little effect for some people and is usually what the long range stuff is made of. hope this helps.
I guess I would not anchor so close to shore that someone can swim and get on your boat. Sounds like you need to have some safety plans put together for yourself. : ) peace
Did anyone on the boats think to get on the radio and pass the word, Seems as if everyone hides instead of all working together and coming out and raising the alarm the bad people will be emboldened . I hope everyone does something nice for the local who chased the thief down.
a naked bloke busting into boats eh? hmmm, maybe a trebel hook on his tallywacker would make him quit....hahaha i think someone with a fishing hook in their dingledoos would not be able to swim very far....reel him back in and he's off to jail. (after the medic visit haha.)
Reading a lot of fear in the comments. Be alert and be smart but don't get weapons and stuff. That is only going to hurt your self or other friendly well meaning locals. At most places I don't lock my boat as the chances of a neighbor coming to my rescue in case of fire or making water is much higher then someone with bad intentions coming on board.

Shouldn't John have told you, to be careful that there is a naked man , coming onto to boats in the middle of night stealing things, in the first place? Especially as you are a single female , sailing alone.
