The thing that stood out the most to me was his great pitch control in every part of his range. A friend of mine told me (about 7 years ago) that the best artists don't sign up for the reality singing competitions. He was probably right.

he tunes down to D (the entire guitar) I believe, because he likes the fullness of the chords higher up the neck but still lower in pitch.
