Hello Eileen, I’m new to card making and stamping (though not to crafting), and have found your videos very helpful with lots of tips. This technique particularly has grabbed my attention and inspiration since I have a large quantity of Epson photo paper I no longer use as I no longer bother printing photos. And I had recently acquired the green man stamp which is stunning.
So I gave this a go with some distress oxides and have had some good results so far with some of the Lavinia stamps.
I’ve used the smooshing / dipping technique, and also brayering the diluted distress oxides, and brayering undiluted oxides. I also managed to apply the oxides with a blending tool (I used a smoothy), with some reasonable results. The way photo paper is made is to grab and fix pigment quickly and dry rapidly, so using blending tools is not the same as on regular cardstock, but it worked. Sort of. I used more ink and the colours were more vivid.
I’ve stamped using distress oxides and also distress ink, which is just dye based. I’ve also tried versafine clair ink, but stamping over the oxide ink before removing the oxide residue has been hit and miss as the versafine ink doesn’t stick properly. That said it gave a nice distressed vintage look. I found I can stamp versafine clair after removing the oxide residue, but have to be careful as the oil pigment can make the stamp slip on the photo paper! This method can be hit and miss too as sometimes the ink doesn’t always print a full image, and you have to dry it off with a heat tool, otherwise it might rub off with fingers! Once dry though it’s permanent.
So after all that, some advice please. What other inks do you recommend here?
Stamping with the distress oxide pads isn’t easy as they are not flat like versafine pads, and have a slight dip which can make inking the stamp difficult, but is manageable. Distress inks, or the mini ones I have, are a bit juicy and not good for detailed stamps I think, and the ink can bead on the stamp. For regular cardstock I would use the distress inks for blending and water reactive techniques and versafine clair inks for stamping as they give excellent detail.
You used memento on this, so I was thinking of getting a couple of colours in this brand as I really want to see what I can do with this technique. I’m trying to only buy what I will use but already have quite a collection (this stuff is addictive but has been so good to de-stress during this pandemic).
    Many thanks 😊 John

hi birgit, ive just had a practice myself so i can teach mum at our craft morning. I used momento tuxedo black to stamp and was disappointed it smudged and went gray after i wiped with damp cloth , i had dried for ages. Sat there dismal, our Eileen makes it look so easy! But then I grabbed a baby wipe and tried wiping again and the grey smudge wiped off and it looked perfect. Motto of the story - dont give up lol ... oh and be patient as Eileen tells us, impatiently lol yes we all want to get to the end :)
