This is the special mini-episode of Cheers made for the 1983 Super Bowl featuring the late Pete Axthelm, NBC analyst. Written by Ken Levine and David Isaacs. kenlevine.blogs...
I can't believe I just watched something with Cheers, that I haven't seen at least 10 times before. This was great, I wish I remember seeing it live back then.
I use to watch cheers as a young kid with my grandpa I was born 12 days before this aired. I didn't start watching cheers till about 1990 good memories my grandpa like Sam mayday Malone
Hey Ken, I remember when you did the Baltimore Orioles Ballgames as a commentator. I believe prior to writing Cheers. Two things I still Love to this day!!! ...Thanks!!!
This segment probably helped "Cheers" a lot over the long run when it rolled out to initially low ratings in its first season before it barely got renewed. Tartikoff-era NBC's Super Bowl tie-in gamble ultimately paid off in the end as reruns subequently drew in larger audiences.
I'm proud to say I watched every episode of Cheers during its first season and recommended it, with little success, to every misguided fool who would rather have watched Simon & Simon and Charles in Charge.
Never heard of this mini-sode. Too bad it didn't make it on the DVDs. Nice to see a lost scene for the first time 30 years later. Very cool until Pete Axthelm breaks the 4th wall and ruins the verisimilitude.
i so badly wanted miami to win that game. i'm over it now and must admit in retrospect that was a fun superbowl to watch. at least the first half was fun.
It's likely the only surviving footage of this, dating back more than 40 years... and it's provided to you for free. And you complain?! You're a disappointment to your folks, junior.

Diane actually picked the winner.
Elephant in the room! Cliff is wearing a postal worker shirt on a Sunday. As far as I know, mail is not delivered on Sundays!
I think its just a Cliff thing that he loves his uniform!😁
I think its just a Cliff thing that he loves his uniform!😁
but Cliff never took it off, it was basically his only source of pride that wasn't made up.
Diane knows football. That Theismann person did okay.
Well, she always won the pools with her logic based on cities with foreign born conductors.
THANK YOU!
Jimmy the Greek travel agency... 😂
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Long Live The Super Bowl!!!!
Diane was right, Miami's defense couldn't hold Washington, but it was the RB-Riggins, not Theisman the QB who picked them apart
Evening,Everybody.
Norm Peterson. Norm!
Norman
Gentlemen,start your taps!
I've read that post in script form a number of times, but it's quite another thing to see it actually produced.
this was aired before I was born.... crazy....
Not seen this one
How many times was Theismann intercepted in that game? Riggins and a poor Miami run defense was what won the game for the Redskins.
Theismann had 2 interceptions in this game, 3 less than the game that happened on his birthday.
Miami lost by the way
Diane > Pete. lol
RIGGINS GO #44!!!
What a great game Super Bowl XVII was.
Riggins running through Don McNeil to give The Skins the victory.
To this day, my favorite SB.
Diane was right!
The Killer Bees really were no match for the Riggins and the Redskins.
Video quality is very poor.

Cheers is on reruns everyday on the Pluto app kid. This is not rare. Don't post vidoes if you're afraid of how viewer will react.
Miami didn't win. The Redskins did. 27-17.
Cliff wears his uniform on a Sunday. What a ZERO!!!!
He had pride.
How was something that was only 17 years old already so popular??
