Legend is an understatement. When asked , Are you as good as Bjoerling? Pavarotti replied,"Please, I am only human."
I am only mortal.
Greatest tenor singer ever! Nuff said! ❤
Totaly agreed!!
YES!
TRIPLE Amen to that!
TeacherPaul commented that he kind of looks like Elvis. Before Elvis became "The King", Jussi was already seated on the throne.
To quote Pavarotti: "“When I'm learning a new opera roll, I first listen to how Jussi Björling sang it. His voice was unique. I wish more than anything that people compare me with Jussi.”
When Pavorotti was asked what the difference was between himself and Jussi Björling, Pavorotti answered, I am only human!!
@@antonyjohnsargent From what I have seen that sounds very like Pavarotti :) witty, charming and somehow managing to be humble whilst glowing with magnificence!
Both these comments about Jussi are true! Pavarotti never reached that effortless mild voice.
I heard Pavarotti said "you can't compare me to Jussi...I am just a man" 😊
Pavarotti was great, but Jussi Bjorling was a gift to us all. I think We can all agree Jussi was something else.
The best operatic tenor ever, his voice is stunning. Wait for that High cbnote, will send shiverrs down your spine
High B 🤓
You’re right. It did.
@@celibidache1000 After his early career he didn’t sing C’s in public.
@@celibidache1000 No it is the C.
@@terjehansen0101 Jussi sang the song in E major. The top note is B.
He was one of the most sublime tenors who ever lived. One of the eternal glories of opera.
As a Swede I must say his articuation is incredible considerng the singing. Every single syllable is still crystal clear despite the strong voice.
As a Finn I agree with you. Jussi also pronounced Italian so beautifully.
Ja det är nog det mest imponerade faktiskt. Kristallklart uttal av varje stavelse.
I think that to fully appreciate this recording one needs to understand Swedish. Jussi articulates each word with precision making this is by far the most powerful Christmas song we have recorded in Swedish.
I come from Sweden and always shed a tear (or two) when I hear this song. It was my grandmothers favorite and she would make sure to turn on the radio when it was played (it was in the days before music became easily available).
I'm from Finland and have The same feelings. This comes from radio at christmas time and I have listened this since I was a kid. Jussi Björling was also my uncles favorite singer.
Det rinner alltid en tår eller två nerför kinden när jag hör den här inspelningen =)
Always a tear or two listening to this recording.
I wish i could have heard Jussi live, the recording technology of the day wasn't the best. Still, i'm very grateful we have these recordings!
...samma här....❤❤❤
It will not be Christmas without "O helga natt" with Jussi Björling. I love this version with him. Loud!!!
Yes, I listen to it too. No christmas without Jussi. 😍
He sings effortless on every note.
The best thing is that his hole family is very humble I went to school with his grandson, and he and the rest of the family is genuinely lovable, cheers from Sweden.
I am Swedish and so proud of this legend 🥰♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
As the "new" tenors say they want to sound like Jussi. He is not just a swedish legend...he is the true sound of how a tenor should sound........a voice from gods!
gods are poor imitations of humans and other animals.
The best tenor ever!!!
When Pavarotti did "Nessun Dorma" he wanted to sound like Jussi, Jussi was his hero!
Waouh Björling was my childyouth favorite tenor and you teach me this anecdote about Pavarotti !!
When I saw Joan Baez in concert in sweden she had visited Jussi's Grave the day before.
@@marcandregingras992 Haha! It’s about Jussi alright!
Is your statement documented? I would like to read it.
Jussi Björling was fantastic! Thank you so much for reacting. Love from Sweden
Oh wow, my favourite christmas song. No christmas without listening to this song by Jussi. Unfortunately Jussi had a drinking problem and passed to early at the age of 49. He was the singer Pavarotti said he listened to when he did research of how to sing a certain opera. Pavarotti aimed for the sound Jussi did.
Wow! That's so sad
I guess one small blessing is he was never a mean drunk. Jussi's O helga natt has been my favorite song since i was 10 year old girl
Yeah he drank a lot because he was always so stressed because everyone wanted him to be perfect
@@ilikefood4935 We can't know why he drank a lot. But allegedly he didn't have a happy childhood, his father pushed him and his brothers really hard.
Who the hell is Jussi Björling?!
The guy who inspired Pavaroti, that's who!
That was so beautiful! Think my cat liked it too, she came and laid down on my desk xD
My mother was a realy good friened of Jussi - she worked at the Restaurant and Dance parlor NALEN in Stockholm befor the war.....Jussi was a frekvent guest at that mega place back then...I even got some old stone records signed by Jussi - and every X-mass we do Listening to him - and its so dam relaxing
Oh wow! That's amazing
Shivers and tears. He is the greatest tenor ever. Combination of sweetness and power is perfect. Now check out his Ingemisco. There were other great singers during the fifties and sixties and one might wonder is there something in our air or food supply that limits the singers of today. Sigh. Thankfully there is the internet and UA-cam!
In a interview with Pavarotti , the interviewer compared him to Jussi...Pavorrities answer... -Please I am just human....
I listen to Jussi every Christmas. This is the ultimate Christmas song!
Listening now on XMAS eve afternoon. Every year I listen to it about 20 times. Learned to love opera through his recordings. I am now 75 and this is the lst sound sound I want to hear as I leave the world: eternal beauty.
Paul, there are legions of us who think he was absolutely the greatest tenor who ever lived.
Unsurpassable. He was the greatest tenor ever.
Indeed.
The best and most sublime tenor ever, Jussi.
First time hearing him myself. I'm feeling all kinds of emotional. Brilliant!
He's not just "a kind of Swedish legend", he is a literate legend. Best one we have ever had.
Best one everybody's ever had in human history of singing.
Superb tenor and rendition of this Christmas song. His duet with Robert Merrill from The Pearl Fishers opera is splendid as is everything that Mr. Björling sang during his lifetime. Enjoy this man's music!
Yes yes yes!!!
I agree that Pearl Fishers duet is magnificent. Somewhere on YT is Merrill talking about Jussi wanting his track a bit louder (you know how "those tenors" are) . . . the squabble finally settled into the final recording exactly as originally mixed!
Jussi was the master of nuances. I'm so glad you discovered him! ❤️
The most beautiful tenor in recorded memory, world wide. Yes, he has a nice voice. With impecable technique and unsurpassed pipes, he sung at all the famous grand opera houses until he passed away in 1960 aged 49. He came from a family with brothers that also became opera singers, though not nearly as prominent as Jussi. Still today there are Swedish opera singers carrying the name Björling proudly att the stages around the world, but not of his caliber unfortunately as he is still the tenor benchmark. He has arguably been surpassed on the world stage by only one one other opera singer up to this day, and that too is a Swedish singer-- Birgit Nilsson.
In Sweden Jussi Björling is also famous for recording another song. Till Havs (To Sea!) a slightly less refined song not originally intended for the an opera voice at world stage standard, but expertly handled by him brought him high accolades by the Swedish people. If you can find a recording of that please enjoy, though Cantique de Noël by Adolph Adam (O Holy night / O Helga Natt) is perhaps his enduring legacy today, as it has become almost legally prescribed Christmas listening in Sweden. Yours, Ann
H,i you hear her one of the best O Holly Night ever, the voice was strong, worm, sublime, and beautiful!!! Marry Christmas!!!
I think these old recordings has a lot of room accostics in them, that will bee to listen to Jussi on a distance, If you hear him singing near, you hear the power in his voice, its amazing 😎 👍
Part of what's amazing is the effortlessness of his technique... and where he -doesn't- breathe...
As a Swede this is a must at Christmas
Indeed.
As a Finn too. Amazing voice and beautiful song!
As a "julMUST"?............ Förlåt.... I will see myself out now....... ;P
@@Refat_swordfish ahaa, haa! Y, from Göteborg, eller?
Such a powerful voice. And he really goes high too, so perfect.
Thank you. :-) I've heard that a thousand times and I'm always deeply moved - what a
fabulous voice.
A legend. Second to none. The most powerful and beautiful voice I have ever heard. There are tons of recordings with him, sadly with ancient technology, but still you hear what an amazing voice he had.
My mom loved this song and since then me too. Bravo!👏👏
Jussi Björling probably will never be surpassed in the tenor world. The biography written by his wife is interesting. Please react to the best recording of Au Fond Du Temple Saint sung by Jussi Björling and his great friend Robert Merrill. That is the finest rendition of that beautiful duet.
I just commented and then scrolled down to read other comments. I cannot agree more with you. Their duets are my Sunday morning music. Robert Merrill was amazing in his own right
Jussi Björling once heard Christofer Lee when he lived in Stockholm. Lee was out rumbling with friends and sang. Jussi offerd Lee to teach him singing, but he couldent pay Lee any money. Christofre tund the offer down because he needed mony to live in Stockholm. Lee said that to turn Jussis offer down was one thing he most regret in life.
By the way his grandmother was Finnish she gave him the nickname Jussi. We Finns also consider one of ours also
Jussi is a northern son and I'm happy with him representing the Nordic Countries as a whole 🥰
You are well deserved that standpoint Kaarlo; me a Swede, I'm just coming from a concert including a Sibelius-song part (a Janne-Aino mail-exchange approach) - fantastic. We have much in common, you and we.
Vi kan dela, kära kusiner. ❤️
@@architechproducer Absolut :)
Jussi Bjorlings voice was so powerful and sweet. He owns,o holy night! Brilliant 🐐🇸🇪.
My mother loved Opera and in our house she had 2 favourites both with powerful but sweet voices. There was Mario Lanza as he made many films. But she also loved Jussi who I never knew much about. But later on I checked him out and he had such a beautiful voice.Listening to him
made me realise what my mother loved in his voice. My ears and heart have appreciated both of these great singers. Please play some more.
Victoria de Los Angeles said that Jussi B had a much more beautiful voice than could be discerned from his recordings. Praise indeed!
I am Swedish. Gave me tears to here this... what a powerful voice he had.
The voice of a God! my dad called him "the mighty Swede"
Tears !ways bearing this man sing. Sublime!
Brilliant. A classic sung for all time.
The finest tenor to ever have lived.

I love that young people are hearing jussi for the 1st time. 60 years after his death!
as a swede, i am very excited that you decided to react to jussi björling 😍
Jussi started singing more or less as a toddler, he had it with his mother's milk. I'm not into schooled voices, but to me it feels that his voice doesn't so much feel schooled in the context artificial or similar - it's more, you know, relaxed, calm, natural.
His voice was incomparable !!!
Absolutely best tenor ever, period.
Jussi is one of our treasures here in Sweden. His voice was amazing, he could sing anything! He made "Till havs" a song that everyone in Sweden knows. Have a listen, and you'll understand why and how he did it..
Have never heard of that song in my life
@@KittenCritters Now you have, congratulations, your life is now better :-)
@@MartinAhlman so why hyperbole that it’s a song everyone knows? Just hurts your credibility
@@KittenCritters Most people with common knowledge of classical (not meaning opera per se, you could say that the Swedish national anthem ( Du Gamla Du Fria ) fit in that group.) Swedish music SHOULD know ABOUT that song. Not necessary to know the words, or to sing it. Recognize while hearing. So go and do some homework, if you haven't already.
'Till Havs' (At the Sea).

@@annabackman3028 Du Gamla du Fria is not the Swedish national anthem. Sweden does not have an officiella national anthem. And attribruting -every swede knows it- to -most people with knowledge of classical music knows it- is an enormous reach.
Teacher Paul.Jussi Bjorling was more than good,he was the greatest of the great tenors.
WOW! I am stunned by how beautiful Jussi Bjorling's voice is! Not being an opera listener, I never heard of him before. But I will be listening to him now. Amazing!
As a Norwegian and fellow Scandinavian I love how you can hear the characteristic little guttural sound he makes when singing things like "ljuset" (the light) and in the middle of some of his other "U" and "I" sounds.
Wich is one of the two typical sounds that you would have to be born and raised in Sweden be able to make. Although the Danes are well known for doing a similar thing at the end of words.
The technique, if you will, would make it much more difficult to sing those notes, I imagine. As the sound is formed by half closing of the note or word far back in the throat. And it definitely breaks with classical music training.
But it is so so beautiful and so so typical and characteristic Swedish, and I really appreciate him putting more of his amazing personality and personal touch in this amazing performance.
Can´t wait to get to heaven and continue listening to you, Jussi. You have blessed mankind. You didn´t bury your talent. My eyes get wet everytime I listen to this remarkable recording, and this song is what christmas is all about.
Don´t miss out on this version by Mahalia Jackson. Be blessed: ua-cam.com/video/uKILk4k3xvk/v-deo.html

Greetings from proud Swede (Jussi and Dimashfan! 😅😍)
I am german and this is also my favorite Christmas song !!! Best ever ,Jussi Björling !!! ❤
Your remark about his voice and O Holy night is so true. Maybe the best ever.
Someone said his voice had the undertone of unshed tears. Beautiful!
The unsurpassed version of o Holy Night!
One of the great singers of the past century!
”O Helga natt” with Jussi gives me goosebumps everytime, especially that high B at the end. If you want to hear him sing the high C# then listen to his version of ”Till havs” 😉🎶
When I listen to Jussi i shed a tear in my mind
Just the best recording of any Christmas song in history!
As a swede, it’s not Christmas until I get to here this song!
Nice to see so many reactors finding out about one of the greatest singers from Sweden. 😃
There has never been nor will there ever be another ,JUSSI BJORLING !!!!!!!!
This is the recording of O Holy Night every singer should listen to before they pick some other song to record.
You speak facts, my friend.
Thank you.
I’m afraid if they did, they’d just throw in the towel and give up.
What a voice, what a version! The GOAT.
Listen to : Till Havs with Jussi it is so powerful. He was a world known tenor and played on all the big opera scenes.
EXTRAORDINARIO!!! UNO DE LOS 3 MEJORES TENORES DE LA HISTORIA. BRAVO JUSSI
No Christmas without Jussi!
He sang with his heart. Greetings from Sweden.
Please react to Jussi Bjorling singing Recondita Armonia. Absolutely beautiful!
This was recorded at the end of his career as well, when he was severely affected by grave alcoholism... Just to put into perspective how great of a tenor we're talking about here!
Love his voice! Great reaction! Sissel Kyrkjebø (also known as just Sissel) is also a singer that might surprise you. Dont need to do a reaction, but just check her out for your own pleasure :)
Yes, Jussie is my favorite lyric tenor too, finding a word to describe his voice is not easy, but I think " a Regal tone " , is the best I can do. Try E la solita storia del pastore, recorded 1959, a year before he died from chronic alcoholism leading to a heart attack, he never lost his voice, despite his struggles with alcohol. e la solita storia..............with him, I always play for people who ask me ; What is singing all about.
He is a WORLD legend
Now listen to one or more of his renditions of Nessun Dorma. They are the very best!
Jussi Bjorling is one of the best tenors that has ever lived. Too bad the recording technology of the time was not as good as now. This song puts me instantly in Christmas mood.
The studio technician messed up this song, hence it was recorded in mono and not stereo.
По нашим сведениям этот замечательный голос ----- из Норвегии.
To quote Pavararotti: "a voice like mine comes around every 100 years, a voice like Jussi's, thats every 1000 years."
His rendition of O Helga Natt is magnificent. You simply must listen to this song sung by Sissel. They are without a doubt absolutely the very best I have ever heard.
Maybe you'll enjoy Mr. Bjorling's performance in La Boheme Victoria de Los Angeles, Robert Merrill, John Reardon, and Karl Bohm.
thanks for making this vid, never get tired of this song
He Jussi Bjoerling is The Greatest! Do you hear? The Greatest Tenor this world has had!!! The Hreatest! Period!!!
yes pls do more of jussi
Unsurpassed, thats the word. This is my must listen to during December. As much as i love Pavarotti … this is Jussi!
Jussi is exquisite.
His "Che Gelida Manina" is the finest ever recorded.....
A God Given Voice… 😊❤️
Imagine those who heard him live. The drink took him to early sadly. Imagine more modern recordings of his voice.
Jussi is a true legend. I think it brings a whole new dimension to it though if you understand Swedish. Jussi died in 1960 but every adult in Sweden know who he was. This song plays on the radio every Christmas. The whole country grieved when he passed and his funeral was broadcast in both television and radio. This isn't very common in Sweden. Most of the funerals that have been broadcasted in Sweden have been for royalties or politicians. Astrid Lindgren, the famous writer, did also have a broadcast funeral.
No christmas without this epic song
and dont forget his brothers.awesome singers to
My Xmas eve since the 80:s have always started with Jussi, coz after midnight news Swedish broadcasting radio play this song. 🎄
Walked pass his statue last week, which you can find in the swedish city of Borlänge, his city of birth. Greetings from sweden!
