Streisand's autobiography brought me here. I can only imagine what it must've been like back then, to see and hear her burst on the scene the way she did. As much as we've all gotten used to her legendary status, the almost superhuman talent on display here is a great reminder of how she got to where she is today.
Impossible to convey how thrilling seeing this show was in 1965. Looking back now, it's clear that they were presenting her as the legend-in-the-making that she clearly was. And, it's still thrilling.
you're absolutely correct. when this was originally telecast it was a time of cute little sitcom comedies and soap operas and then suddenly BAM! The shock of it was so powerful that Barbra was instantly catapulted into a rarified atmosphere very few performers had even tried to reach. It's a talent beyond criticism which means you are experiencing greatness.
I was 5 when this aired. I remember parts very vividly but what I remember most is my mother being in tears every time she sung, with the tissue in her hand, just shaking her head no in amazement. I can't hear her sing without doing the same thing. Treasure. Legend.
(0:48) In her biography Barbra wrote that she was shocked to see how good she looked when she first saw the film footage from her first TV special. She credited Dwight Hemion. Joe Layton and the great skill of the lighting and camera crew. Yes, she looked gorgeous.
It might take me years to read MY NAME IS BARBRA now that I am caught up in looking for the original material as I read Ms. Streisand's biography. I remember this television special in 1965, and think I watched a moment of it. Back then, I would not have the time to enjoy it. As a sophomore in college, determined to make my mark by graduating with honors, even though I felt I was only of average intelligence, I did not get to indulge in watching much television, and certainly not enjoying it, as the next paper or the next test was always on my mind. How wonderful to have the time these days to be so captivated by her biography that I want to watch everything she talks about and now I not only have the time, but with you tube, the source. So enjoying this journey...
This special was aired on April 28, 1965 on CBS Television. Timed with Streisand's fifth studio album (Columbia Records) “My Name Is Barbra”. The special won awards, including 5 Emmys. The TV special was split into three (3) acts.
This sublime song from the Fantasticks had always suffered from a conventional chipper, wide-eyed Disney princess/ingenue interpretation that never truly touches the heart. Barbra imbued it with the proper depth, thoughtfulness, longing and immediacy it deserves.

Incredible, like a relaxed Michael Jackson

This special showcases why Streisand is a singular talent. The greatest star indeed.
Fascinating to hear how much her voice had changed/matured in only a handful of years!
Yeah. It had changed and gotten even more glorious from the time she recorded this at the Bon Soir till this T.V. special.
Because she has begun very young...between 19 to 25 you change fast...it's the same for every human being.
Impossible to find the words to describe this talent! Nothing in Webster will suffice!
Wow! What an amazing voice.

My favorite song from Barbra's first TV special ("Much More" from the musical The Fantasticks).
Mine also!
