While most likely not capable of defeating Thanos alone he is the one adversary you really, really, REALLY don't want to fight against. The "If a hungry tiger chases us I don't need to be faster than the tiger. I just need to be faster than YOU!" mindset. Thing is after "the deed is done" he would attack the tiger, break all his bones, pull his teeth, take the eyeballs and skin him while he still is (somewhat) alive. Thanos would have met a similar fate if the Punisher was in Endgame.

The most Frank Castle could have done is temporarily inconvenience Thanos's plans. Remember, we NEVER saw Thanos actually trying in the MCU until Endgame, throughout the entirety of Infinity War, he was just toying with everyone. He didn't even need to use the power stone to beat the Hulk down in under a minute, and once he had 2 stones, he was so invincible that he took off his armor.

If anybody here has watched Arrow than you would know the the punisher is just an normal classic case of. “Oh, my family died because of him and him and her. So imma kill them all.” Except he turned it around and saved a 16 year old girl from being murdered.
Imagine you served your country, found out those in command were using that time to make themselves rich while killing innocent people, came home to watch your family killed in cold blood, suffered injuries that would have killed other people. What would you do? Honestly, if it were me, I'd make this Frank Castle, or Thomas Jane's Castle, look like a boy scout, as I plowed through as many of the b@@@ards as I could before they finally brought me down. I would make it hurt, I'd draw out their pain as long as I could. I'd study medicine so I could heal them between "sessions" so they lasted longer. I'd make them pray for Satan to save them, knowing Lucifer himself would decline, saying "even I'm not going to face that" knowing I'd end up in hell for what I did. It' would never be vengeance, it would never be revenge, it would be purely, simply, punishment. Jane and Bernthal perfectly embody the "you took everything from me, I'm going to make you sacrifice everything, make you destroy your own life, then just before I send you to hell, I'll let you know you never had to, it was me making you do it, to make you suffer more than you made me."
Season 2 felt like it diluted all the shit that happened. Russo sort of just went "oh well fuck him" when his memory came back. The CIA never went anywhere. Every time the family was mentioned in season 2 everyone just went "oh this shit again" and I dont feel it did justice at all to the amazing torture scene at the end of season 1. With that pseudo dream sequence with his wife.
It's also terrible what an old cliche story line this is: the wife and children of a tough good guy are killed by criminals (Walking Tall, Mad Max, Death Wish) and he seeks revenge, only to find out this is a conspiracy plotted by powerful, hidden figures (Rambo, Bourne Identity, Mission Impossible).
