Wow! I have been following your papers for past one year for my research at WPI as a Master's student as the papers were really effective to grasp valuable and contemporary information from. Just today I came across your youtube channel and went through some DV concepts. You are not only an amazing researcher but also a great speaker. Whatever I heard coming from you went straight to my long-term memory. I will be sharing your channel to my peers! They should not miss out on this interactive opportunity to learn!
Reading at least 5 papers of the professor is a vital step that I didn't do that. That's probably the reason that I failed to secure so many interviews last year. Unfortunately, I am still searching for PhD positions.
@@tochiemmanuel3608 I assume we can find some free papers of each professor. Besides, the abstract of their paid articles are available free of charge. I don't read the whole paper.
Thank you so much for this great insight. Honestly I have been scared to send cold emails to professors because how will I stand out but this video has showed be precisely how. Thank you once again Dr. Lace.
Thank you 🙏 I truly deeply appreciate your video. I've just graduated with an Msc. and I want to get into PhD given that my dream job is to be a professor. The application process is weird for me and overwhelming but this video helped to erase some confusion. Thanks again!
Thank you Dr. Lace Padilla, your video inspired me a lot and motivated me to reach out a potential supervisor. Thanks to your advice he even replied to me!
Amazing content, Thank you so much for taking the time to really give an in-depth feel to reaching out to Professors, researching is a dream for me and standing out has always been intimidating as most African Universities have very little research oppurtunities for undergrads. This was really encouraging
Getting started can be challenging, and even I found it difficult to know where to begin! I recommend checking out this video on how to identify advisors who would be a good fit for you. ua-cam.com/video/i7IvE6iXSpM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Dr.LacePadilla
Hey Dr. Padilla, great video! I've often felt intimidated by "bothering" busy professors, and this video has given me more courage. I see on most professors' websites they say that they are hiring PhD students and but also something along the lines of "Sorry I can't respond to your email if you ask me about PhD admissions, please apply directly through the department, thank you!". So I was wondering when would you advise reaching out before applying vs not reaching out and just directly applying?
Thank you So much. I am currently engaging a Masters in Sustainability and I am eager to do a PhD on sustainability on any topics related to societal and natural harmony.
I think the general advice is good, but I do not think candidates should focus too much on their supervisor's work. Mainly, because at the end of the day, the candidate will be working on his own original contribution to the field of study. A Phd. is mostly about the candidate's work, not on the supervisor's one. Thank you.
You are missing the point. Of course, the student will be working on his/her own paper at the end of the day. The idea of reading the supervisor's works is to be able to make a good first impression and actually "secure" the professor as your advisor. If your email is as generic and lacks substance, no professor would like to be your advisor.
Good question. Do one follow-up email at least a week after your first. Don't call. If you don't get a response after that follow-up, I don't think you need to do another.
That's an insightful video, Professor. I have got most of my queries cleared through this video. Thank you so much, Professor. I just want to ask one more thing that how the subject of the email should be written which will be precise for the Professor to open it?
That's a great question. From skimming the emails I've received, I don't see much variation in the subject lines. It doesn’t seem to affect whether I decide to open them or not. I’ll reach out to other professors I know to see if they have any thoughts on this.
Thank you for this relevant video. I have worked under my university professor for 3 years after completing my masters. I have successfully manages to publish 2 first author publications during that time period. Will this benefit me in my PHD application?
It's sucha realistic and thorough vedio. But I've a question, as you mentioned in the vedio, that we should ask professor if he is accepting students or not, that's essentially cold emailing, but if phd positions are opened in their lab, and we want to get acceptance from the professor before applying, then should we still ask for the vacant position or what? I'd be much obliged, if you answer that! Thank you!!
Thank you so much, Dr. Padilla, for this great video. I chanced on it at the right time and it has been as enlightening as it has been instructive. I do have one question: How else can I read the works of the professor I intend to contact? When I checked the profile of the professor I intend to contact on Google Scholar, I realized that most of her works do not have PDF links that I can visit to read the full article, not to mention download them. The ones that do actually have the PDF links are monetized, and I would have to buy them before I can read them. Are you please able to help in this regard? Thank you so much for your assistance.
@@DrDataVIS Thank you, Dr. Padilla, I appreciate your well wishes. Can you please provide any support regarding the question I asked? Also, the application deadline is February 1, 2025, and I still haven't written to her. Is it still a good time to send her a cold email?
Thankyou very much professor for making this video. One thing I may ask is that as a prospective PhD student, what documents can I attach with this email? Can I attach my CV and research papers?
Can i just send an email regarding my topics and how it is aligned with the professor research? Thn later if he demands i can send the CV/Resume and a simple paper?
thank you very much dear professor . I have listened to the whole video. the problem is that writing a sample after 20 pages is really difficult for getting admitted. if you can have some tips regarding this sample writing technique
Admittedly, I'm not in a field that requires writing samples, so my advice may not be as informative as others'. However, if your field does require a writing sample, it's important to recognize that writing will likely be a major requirement in that discipline. To succeed in such a program, you’ll need to develop strategies to write effectively and frequently. While I can't say what those strategies will be for you specifically, it's something to consider when applying. But here is a resource that includes advice on writing samples that could be useful: gdr.emory.edu/documents-GDR/Elliott%20-%20Job%20Guide.pdf
Thank you so much for this If I'm sending a cold email, does potential supervisor have to be the corresponding author in the paper mentioned? Or is it okay to mention the ones where the potential supervisor is a collaborator and not one of the main authors or something?
They do not need to be the corresponding author. It is perfectly fine to email them about any paper they have co-authored. They are likely most invested in the papers where they are the first or last author, but they will still appreciate your interest in any of their work.
Hello Dr. Padilla, I have no publication and my only research experience was during my undergraduate project but I’m interested in applying for a PhD program. As a Professor yourself, would you be willing to work with any student similar to myself? I want to know if I stand a chance for a PhD program
Thanks a lot mam, Would you please share me an email format for doing bachelor degree(Csc),, As i don't have any research or a project so i can't write it ,, please mam.
I'd recommend avoiding requests for funding at the start. It's better to first ask if they have any open positions, as having open positions usually indicates they are already funded.
