Grigory Sokolov is one of the greatest pianists in the world, a worthy representative of the incomparable Russian piano school. He still studies the piano for ten / twelve hours a day, and has dedicated his entire life to music. He deserves our applause and admiration. Thank you, Grigory. ❤

It seems that his approach to baroque in general is of extreme intimacy. He never rushes. He never streamlines micro dynamics within phrase. He does the opposite - every note is accordingly articulated and follows the overall design of his interpretation. That intimacy is not sentimental attitude it is actually achieved to immerse us into originally chamber atmosphere of baroque music that was played in private spaces. No one was in the hurry in those chambers when the music was pretty much the only easily available entertainment. But for today's audience it is a revelatory quality - he fully understood that and presented with wise restrain and mind boggling finesse. That is very french in character and that is probably why his playing of baroque repertoire is so affecting. He let us revel with him in each nuance and detail while following this magical journey along with him and composer. Magician/poet/artist/wise man - all those things are him. A million thanks...

Sokolov's trill in baroque music is always a pleasure to hear, only he produces trills at that high speed with such clarity and attack and evenness, no pianists that I heard of are capable of that kind of crispy trills that he produces, and I'm sure he's aware of his uniquness in this part probably because he's put a lot of efforts in achieving that kind of pureness in tone and artistry

once a musician said "es gibt Musik die schoener ist als mann sie spielen kann" (some music is more beautiful then someone ever can play) and I believed it untill I heard Sokolov play the second part (and the end of the first part!) of this Brahms sonata. This is of an unbelievable beauty.
I saw him in 1999 and met him after the performance. He was very nice. His playing is other worldly. His Rameau playing is unequaled. His articulation is supreme. When I heard him he played Rameau, Beethoven 2 #3, Ravel Le Tombeau De Couperin, and Chopin encores. It still is as great a piano performance as I've ever heard. And I've heard most everybody. He doesn't play in America anymore but he's still going strong. Thankfully we have UA-cam.

Sokolov is a most serious artist - like Heifetz, Kleiber, and Horowitz. Les Sauvages is at 18:17 - in case anyone is curious. It's one of my favorite pieces by Rameau. :-)
Clybourn was the first receiver of the Grand prize at the International Tchaikovsky competition in 1959, Sokolov was the winner of its third competition in 1966! All Tchaikovsky competitions were presided by world renowned pianist Emil Gilels, who received Rachmaninov’s accolades before he reached age of 22. Gilels was Sokolov’s patron and supporter of his pianistic artistry, the same way as Arthur Rubinstein was to Gilels.

Absolutely agree. In fact I would say the same listening to anything that he plays. He seems to carry almost the entire keyboard literature in his head. By whatever criteria you use to define greatness, Sokolov qualifies with ease. Technical accomplishment, creative and innovative genius, power, passion, precision, stylistic knowledge and appreciation , artistry, the memory equivalent of several main frame computers, a profound knowledge and understanding of the instrument itself, which sees him working with a piano technician for hours before each concert to ensure the piano is voiced and tuned to the temperament most suitable for the hall and programme, bearing in mind of course that the acoustics of the hall will be dramatically different when full of people, an ability to communicate with which ever audience is present. All these different skills and attributes, Sokolov has in spades, and the rest. I have been fortunate to hear many of the greats live - Horowitz, Richter, Rubinstein, too many really to name individually. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music myself in piano, a pupil of the legendary English piano professor, Gordon Green, with over half a century of playing and listening, it is my personal opinion (and it is only a subjective opinion ) that Sokolov is entitled to sit at the head of the top table of piano gods. Someone needs to create a word that surpasses genius to describe Grigory Sokolov.
@@martintoogood1444 read the first paragraph and got bored with the superlatives . Your subjectivity is obvious but where music is concerned it's an error. Hamelin is just as good with different era. So bollocks to you son

Music is totally subjective! So no error there! The error is yours! BTW, I am not your son and the use of expletives just shows how linguistically challenged you are. Just another internet troll.
27:33 - Too bad that audio glitch had to happen during Sokolov's excellent and hugely impressive Rameau interpretation.

from 49.52...the entire movement, just sublime
I am so sorry, that I cannot get to hear him at artmuseum, Louisiana in north Zealand, DK this time. Every ticket sold - every seat taken. Very sad.
Quelle grandiose maestria !

Sublimement russe ! Subtile et puissante interprétation.
Holy mackerel! I am speechless.

What divine beauty - just listening it prolonged my miserable life for a decade!
thank you uploader, thanks a lot
Alucinante!!
Another MAESTRO!
Absolute excellence: 40:00
