Only Schubert can turn a dance, into a lament. Only Sokolov can truly take out all of the colours and deep emotions inside a short piece, like he did with Schubert's Hungarian Melody D.817.
I've heard nearly all Sokolov's recordings and consider him the most complete keyboard artist of the era. And considering the quality of many young pianists coming up now, that's saying something!

Indeed. Aside from his irreproachable pianism, I truly admire Maestro Sokolov's humility. At the end of a performance he typically takes one single bow (with one hand on the piano, as if sharing the applause with the instrument) and in a very dignified manner leaves the stage.
Is it possible to upload 1st part of the recital?????!!!!!!!!!!!!! I admire Gregory Sokolov and complete revcital would be the complete gift for all of us!!!!
reminds me of those desserts that you put away after 2 bites because they are too sweet. It is a pianistically masterful but overexpessive interpretation that robs Schubert of his natural poetry.
@@amirmotahari6186 -- Your quibble reminds me of the very end of the SECOND movement of Rakhmaninov's 2nd Concerto: Everyone, even Richter, plays it with restraint, even delicacy, but Weissenberg, in one recording, positively hammers the closing chords (it is after all marked 'Forte') to grand effect. It's fascinating, all the different 'takes' on a single written score.....from Cortot to Prats! Greetings from México…..
@@steveegallo3384 well, I would not call it "Quibble", its a known fact that Russian pianists (there are exceptions like Richter, Volodos) overdo German composers. Its not trivial when a pianist forgets about the style of the composer and does things to the music that does not suit the composition at all.
Every single note has a meaning in Sokolov's world. He is telling a story; we are just guests on his journey to eternity.

Totally agree. He is my Number One!
The Rameau pieces are exquisitely performed.

Beethoven said that Music is the greatest of the Arts because it expresses things which cannot be put into words.
Genius
Selection of pieces are very peaceful, calm, soothing and relaxing too. A great recital. Arun dey

He plays Schubert like I imagine Schubert played Schubert
Perhaps even better.

How can the recital consist of only 4 Schubert impromptus with the rest being encores? I think the first half is missing
