Yeah various no-till variations are used almost everywhere even Alaska if the crop works with it. When we stopped farming for a living a 806 Farmall or a 4020 JD was a pretty big tractor. I did do some disking about 10 years ago with Dads 1566 Farmall. He used it mostly for cutting brush on CRP land around Delta Jct. He has some work lined up for next year but will be 87 by then...
I love the big bud ,, long live 16V 747 big bud tractor I have driven all sorts of machinery in my life granted I am only 38 but in 25 years of farm work no machine has ever impressed me like the sight of this monster at work ,, I personally own an old 1978 Steiger panther and a 3588 international both I bought with bad engines and replaced then with used Detroit 8V-92TT truck engines just for the sound
WOW....these are small 2 the one hunsaker farms had in WS. This JD tractor had 16 tires & could pull 5 plows. I was driving truck for them at the time & got stuck....my truck was over-loaded like always & down to the axle in mud....this dude come over with all 5 plows in tow, backed up hooked a chain on to the truck & jerked me out like I wasn't even there....now thats impressive of power !!!!
Man, i gotta give 5*s for this!! I wanted to get up to Rantoul to see BB747 but work wouldnt allow, and i understand that this is the last time that they are gonna move it and as cool as it is, i dont want to go to Big Sandy MT to see it. I know its not in person, but this is better than nothing. Thanks for posting bro!
Big Bud is a fantastic tractor a testament to all that is good about American farming - good ole boys designing and building a monster - lets not forget that Steiger for many years built the highest Hp tractors long before Deere came out with their artics All that said they are dinosaurs, modern tractors such as the Case Quadtrac the Challengers and the 8000T series Deeres are the way forward they will pull just as many furrows with only 2-3 % slip and a fraction of the diesel consumption
Fully loaded, fuel and weights the big bud weights 130,000 lbs? Roughly 50 tons? OMG. I knew it was a big tractor, but just as heavy as a tank (M1A1 Abrahams 67.6t)? Rofl copter, no wonder it has so much traction even with just duals on it.....where other tractors need to go to triples..... . Great video, thanks for sharing!
i bet you could hitch up another one of those ploughs to the back of it and it would still pull it like they weren't there! great to see the beast awakened
Did anyone else get an increasing desire to see these tractors rolling over a row of UTV's, as the video progressed? Holy cow, the place was lousy with gokarts!
Williams bros dont actually use it anymore. Summer fallowing is a thing of the past. In the Big Sandy area (where the William Bros and I farm) chem-fallow is the new way. Although im starting to debate whether to go back to summer-fallowing cause all this spraying is a pain in the ass.
i have done it before, 2 years ago. tilled up all of the field grass and planted a mix of grasses that are supposed to be better at erotion control. discked up 30 acres of hills and valleys on 6.3 gallons of fuel in a 70 hp deere 450c with a 10 foot disk.
The Big Bud has a Detroit in it which is a 2 stroke. So what sounds high revving is actually revving the same as a regular diesel. They only max about 2500rpm. Detroits get their power from high rpm unlike four strokes.
Big Bud does one acre per minute on 3/4 gallon of fuel,, when you have 10,000+ acres you might not mind a little extra fuel for the time saved. Plus, that's pulling an eighty foot cultivator with 3' shanks.
The 747 was purpose designed to deep rip earth on a cotton farm in California. It was designed to replace the 9 (yes, nine) Caterpillar D9 dozers that were doing the work prior to this machine being put into use. I believe what ihc1974 was saying is that it doesn't usually use a traditional plow like it is in this video, but a very large ripping plow.
Surprised to see RM go that far west. The Steiger is from Holgate,Ohio. The 16 cylinder engine in The Big Bud is the same in the 840hp 85 ton Terex 33-11
oh no no i completely agree with you i just think its crazy how a tiny lil car (comared to big bud at least) has the same horsepower as this huge tractor..
Cool video! Thanks for taking the time to record this for all to enjoy! BTW, if I had to choose between the 3 of those machines to run all day, the Steiger wins. I can't see going completely deaf in a single day running that Big Bud around. Now, as impressive as that machine may be, due to its physical size and such, I'm pretty certain that the fuel it burns doesn't offset the work that it accomplishes per hour. As for that 8020 Deere, it's still a neat machine, but certainly not practical at all in today's world - in any aspect... noise (2-stroke), fuel consumption (2-stroke pig), comfort (no cab), safety (no ROPS)... all poor.
lol al gore called wanted to plant 500 trees on the ground that got worked their to counteract the carbon foot print left by the stieger and big bud thats awesome we use to have a smaller big bud on a farm my dad worked at south of town when i was a kid they are amazing machines.
actually straight from the factory this tractor was pushing near 960 then it has since been fitted with bigger turbos and a lil tweaking. williams bros say its putting out over 1000 right now however now of this can be verified as there is no way to dyno it correctly
The big bud has been retired it is in a museum in Havre Mt. costs more to keep it up than retire it. The tires are way to much to replace so they parked it.
also these 15 bottom plows are more fit for the steiger especially in the soft soil out there not like pa clay thats for sure.... williams bros said they could go 25 bottoms but they couldnt find one that big... this tractor once pulled 80ft chisel plow...plowing at 1.3 acres/m
As far as the starting issue goes, it sounds like the motor needs some injector work done to it. In the other videos of that tractor posted on here, theres white smoke comming out of one of the stacks while the other side is burning clear which indicates the one side of the motor has a weak injector(s). Have one of these deeres you're talking about or any other brand put the amount of time on it that this tractor probably has and see how that turns out!
The power a Detroit engine can build is just amazing. Even the modern new 4 cycle Detroits can make incredible power even wiith all the new smog related garbage on them. detroit would be the only engine i would ever consider for a heavy working machine.
Live with it, sometimes people with money compensate for low self-esteem by building large and impractical machines. No need to insult them, just learn not to take it personally and watch the show.
@Nonsensei436 Yes, but you're completely overlooking the incredible drag created by that enormous plow. Those discs go how far into the ground? Far! It takes a lot of power to pull something like that, and a lot of ballast to be able to put that power to the ground.
In proportion to the work they do a big tractor probably makes less pollution than several little ones doing the same amount of work? In any case, a burst of black smoke when the transmission changes up doesn't necessarily mean the engine is inefficient all the time - its only because the fuel input is momentarily out of balance with the engine revs! Watch the exhausts - in most cases they are clear once the engine sorts itself and adjusts to the increased load.
Seems it does move! But really,I've seen much smaller tractors pull the same or more here in Indiana. Does the horn work? Wonder what it might sound like? (hopefully like a train)
It is so entertaining to see all these people complain about agriculture and how this large equipment is bad for the atmosphere. To begin with these tractors are thirty years old and there is ALOT more technology involved in making a diesel engine produce clean power these days. 2nd, you have got to realize that farming is a game of efficiency, you have got to get the most done with the time that you have.
For those who might wonder. The 747 does not usually pull a "plow" they don't make one big enough. So they used what they could in the exhibition. Last I heard it was and probably still is on a large wheat farm in Northern MT. When working, pulling a huge chisel plow it tills an acre a minute and is very efficient. Those of you who would whine about carbon foot prints and other such propaganda just remember where the wheat came from the next time you bite into a piece of bread.
A 20v710 probably weighs 50,000 lbs dry. A tractor powered by such an engine would be as big as a Terex Titan. Come to think of it, I'd like to see that too.
Dang, i think that John Deere must've been powered by a drip-troit diesel by the sound of it. And maybe that white tractor too. I don't know what kind of tractors the white one or the line green were....
@studboyspark ye ur right there, here in the uk we dont have much english gear on the farm cos most of it is crap !!! all continental stuff , cant beat it , but the yanks are the ones who make good tractors !!!
@rroberts111 well when it shifts its the same as revving the engine when its in neutral, i think thats what they meant by saying the trans is making it do that
all tillable soil is going to be tilled at some point within a year or so, also the soil shouldnt be "hard" if it is you have compaction problems or its clay in a drought and shouldn't be plowing any way.
@Manorfarmdenton yes i totally agree with you, and to those that think these are pollution monsters, they are in a way... these are not new state of the art tractors... these are 30 + year old machines... lots have changed for the better, when has a v16 detroit diesel ever been fuel friendly ?? keep in mind also that not many top tractors of today can even think of doing the work that these units can either...
@neiltce You're completely wrong about the revs (around 2000, and a lot slower than a lot of 4-stroke diesels) and about the rebuilding. GM Detroit Diesels are amongst the most reliable and long-lived engines ever built. Why else were they used in trucks and buses, cranes and tractors, generators and boats etc etc etc. They are superb engines - I have had several, including one in a 1963 Chamberlain tractor which is as good as the day it was built.
this tractor has a detroit 2 stroke. All the power is on the top end. If you lug the engine you will do more damage. u gotta to pin it to win it w/ two stroke diesels
@glenn3rd2004 Of course it would. The Loader is heavy construction equipment, your not going to use the Loader to pull a moldboard or chisel plow lol. Big Bud was meant for a different purpose. But I do agree with these people who say we need something bigger than the Big Bud in modern farms. If the Big Bud's were produced in the 1970's, then what does that say about the soon coming 2010's and beyond?
the stieger kicks ass. it is pulling the plow easy as not even working hard....
@BigErckleStudios oh city boy... to people who know anything about farming/plowing, this is an incredible display of power
The Big Bug and Steiger Tiger are the two best of the three tractors.
I love the big bud ,, long live 16V 747 big bud tractor
I have driven all sorts of machinery in my life granted I am only 38
but in 25 years of farm work no machine has ever impressed me like the sight of this monster at work ,,
I personally own an old 1978 Steiger panther and a 3588 international
both I bought with bad engines and replaced then with used Detroit 8V-92TT truck engines just for the sound
When I was younger I use to watch big bud plowing out the the fields, it looks a lot bigger in person.
Had Big Bud in Texas on a Dam building project 25 years ago., pulled right along beside Caterpillar D9 H's, awsom tractor
That Steiger Tiger is rollin there at the end.
nice video finally get to see the 747 at work. or what it would be called. Looks like it was barely working at all.
Look at all them Farmers! So Happy and Innocent! A Vanishing Breed!
Thanks for posting bro!
the 8020 is also sounding pretty good too. thats got a screaming jimmy powering it too
Those are just beautiful.
Big bud is always be my favorite
Big Bud is a fantastic tractor a testament to all that is good about American farming - good ole boys designing and building a monster - lets not forget that Steiger for many years built the highest Hp tractors long before Deere came out with their artics All that said they are dinosaurs, modern tractors such as the Case Quadtrac the Challengers and the 8000T series Deeres are the way forward they will pull just as many furrows with only 2-3 % slip and a fraction of the diesel consumption
I saw the big Steiger's working the pine plantations on O'ahu Hawai'i. They were impressive to say the least!!
We don't have Big Bud over here in Australia but we do have a few Steigers and man, they are a truly awesome machine!
The Steiger tiger IV is a pretty sweet beast too
Fully loaded, fuel and weights the big bud weights 130,000 lbs?
Roughly 50 tons? OMG.
I knew it was a big tractor, but just as heavy as a tank (M1A1 Abrahams 67.6t)? Rofl copter, no wonder it has so much traction even with just duals on it.....where other tractors need to go to triples..... .
Great video, thanks for sharing!
i bet you could hitch up another one of those ploughs to the back of it and it would still pull it like they weren't there! great to see the beast awakened
Neat video. Cool to see the old 4wds out plowing.
The place is over run w/Gators and Polaris Ranger's!
I love them old noisy ass Detroit's, too bad they don't make them anymore.
They do, but you won't like the new ones because MTU owns them
Gotta love those big old Steigers!
Did anyone else get an increasing desire to see these tractors rolling over a row of UTV's, as the video progressed? Holy cow, the place was lousy with gokarts!
power show years ago in belgrade mt. watched a 60-120 peerless steam traction engine pull a 40 bottom plow. that was a sight to see.
Williams bros dont actually use it anymore. Summer fallowing is a thing of the past. In the Big Sandy area (where the William Bros and I farm) chem-fallow is the new way. Although im starting to debate whether to go back to summer-fallowing cause all this spraying is a pain in the ass.

These guys live down the road from me in ohio...they always have the coolest new equip.

That Big Bud could pull sometime soo much larger. I could imagine two of those plows behind that tractor.
Surprised to see RM go that far west. The Steiger is from Holgate,Ohio. The 16 cylinder engine in The Big Bud is the same in the 840hp 85 ton Terex 33-11
I do to mate, i think the little 8 row plow looks tiny behind that thing! Shud try the 15 bottom plow with the deere
that 747 can take another 15 and still pull without an issue...thats a strong machine.
Of course but it only has the traction for about 18 tops unless you toss a ton onto the front
nice tractors, speciel the last
oh no no i completely agree with you i just think its crazy how a tiny lil car (comared to big bud at least) has the same horsepower as this huge tractor..
Wow... so many wee golf carts. For when "standing" and "walking" are just too hard.
tats wy are so fat most of them dont want to walk anymore they have to go buy a $ 5000 dollar cart to ride them around. just lazy is all this is
lansing9r It's about 20 miles of walking to see the show on foot...
Cool video! Thanks for taking the time to record this for all to enjoy! BTW, if I had to choose between the 3 of those machines to run all day, the Steiger wins. Big Bud does 1 acre per minute if you disk cultivate plant and pack all at once
greg ross
: I know, right?! LOL
Turbo Diesel agreed. Always been a Steiger fan.
This is the first video of Big Bud that I've actually seen it move.
a video of one moving now thats impressive( it moving not the tractor its self
Big Bud, we meet again.
its funny watching everyone on their golf-carts and other smaller trikes its funny actually.
That "Big Bud" makes those little 4 wheel John Deere's look tiny!!!
If I win the lottery I'm buying. A Big Bud freakin awesome
lol al gore called wanted to plant 500 trees on the ground that got worked their to counteract the carbon foot print left by the stieger and big bud thats awesome we use to have a smaller big bud on a farm my dad worked at south of town when i was a kid they are amazing machines.

@dwylinmiller totally agree, and i also love tractor pulling
And where is the ACO.
The big bud has been retired it is in a museum in Havre Mt. costs more to keep it up than retire it. The tires are way to much to replace so they parked it.

So they finally got it to move. Bravo.
OMG it moves!!!!!! THis is the first video i see that this thing moves lmao
I have been to Randall Bros before but dont recall seeing the Steiger Tiger

We have 2 Steiger Cougar 3's, one with an NT-855 Cummins and the other has a 3306 Cat
as for 1hp=1 acre a day, a case stx 500 a 500 hp tractor plowed 793 acres and some change in 1 day back in 2005.
@ihc1974 Yeah its used just about 60 miles from where it was originally built in Havre Montana. Still being used today for deep ripping purposes.
In proportion to the work they do a big tractor probably makes less pollution than several little ones doing the same amount of work? Watch the exhausts - in most cases they are clear once the engine sorts itself and adjusts to the increased load.
Not only the workload but the gear ratios i9n these things. Do they really do field work or are they showpieces?
Nice job, wish I could of been there!!!
Seems it does move!
But really,I've seen much smaller tractors pull the same or more here in Indiana.
Does the horn work? Wonder what it might sound like?
(hopefully like a train)
What does the 747 pull then if it does not pull a plow if i may ask.
do they really need to revv those 2 strokes that much to produce power?
It is so entertaining to see all these people complain about agriculture and how this large equipment is bad for the atmosphere. I'd love to see someone build a machine like Big Bud but with an EMD V-20cyl 5,500 HP engine. Would be neat to see what kind of field that could plow.
They haven't built a transmission to handle that much torque. would have to use diesel electric like the big mining trucks.
A 20v710 probably weighs 50,000 lbs dry. A tractor powered by such an engine would be as big as a Terex Titan. Come to think of it, I'd like to see that too.
The tractor would have to be so gargantuan and heavy
engine would be as long as plow it pulling
Can anyone tell me what the practical use of a tractor this size is? That a smaller more efficient one is capable off??
this thing has 1000 hp.
so does the veyron.
DAMN.
@stihlthebest Or Big Tractor Parts in Rollag, MN. They specialize in rebuilding Steiger tractors. Check out their website, bigtractorparts.
@onecylanderracer i think the ford ranger still has a plant in minnesota, but is on its way to be built out of the states
Hook all three up to the Big Bud - it would not flinch with that big 92 Series Detroit Diesel V16 under the front!
Dang, i think that John Deere must've been powered by a drip-troit diesel by the sound of it. And maybe that white tractor too. I don't know what kind of tractors the white one or the line green were....
@dannemannn its a dietroit diesel 2stroke they rev higher then 4 stroke diesels
the feeling when the golf kart stops but the big bud doenst
am I the only one who liked the john deere
@studboyspark ye ur right there, here in the uk we dont have much english gear on the farm cos most of it is crap !!! all continental stuff , cant beat it , but the yanks are the ones who make good tractors !!!

now thats a tractor. the steiger i drive doesnt even compare
@MrShine100 no kidding! it would take just as much time to walk across the field and drive and wait to watch big bud!
this tractor has a detroit 2 stroke. All the power is on the top end. If you lug the engine you will do more damage. u gotta to pin it to win it w/ two stroke diesels
@excelhuntexcel The Steiger could easily pull the 15 bottom plow too.

Awesome tractor
wht was the green tractor at the begining
Sweet vid! Do the organizers think the guys on the tractors are too dumb to find their way from one end of the field to the other?
so.. in wich shipyard is that monster made?-)
I enjoyed this!
The tractors are awesome! But the filmmaker has yet to exert powerful!
But will it blend?
@dannemannn I think they are maxing out the speed for their working gear.
Good ol detroits. I always heard that if your detroit diesel wasnt leaking oil, you better shut that dude off, cuz there aint no oil in it! LoL.
