I bought a 202 off a guy for $60 a few years ago, and I only just realized after watching your videos it has the memory card in it! Guess I really lucked out
I bought my SP-202 used off someone over 20 years ago. I’m glad I kept it. The person sold it to me wanted money to go to the recording studio. I used it mostly for loops and one shots. Anyways, the power outlet plug doesn’t work anymore. So if you’re looking for a replacement check out a company called PowerLine. I use batteries sometimes but scared I’m going to leave the batteries in the unit and it corrode.
My brother still has one he bought when they came out I’m gonna get it from him to play around with. He hasn’t used it in over a decade. I can make use of it!
Hold on, despite the design of the card it self with the edges, are there anything beneath the plastic corner? [Or could you maybe with a sharp hobby knife just make/cut the edge?]
Thanks so much for making this video- very thoughtful of you and, yes, very helpful. It might be obvious, fruitless, but thrift stores/ charity shops/ pawn shops/ yard sales/ boot sales/ flea markets seem like a place you could find old digital cameras lying around (?) . You have to enjoy that kind of thing, but who doesn't?
Thanks for the great video! Just wondering - regarding the fx limitations you mentioned when using the memory card - are you still able to use the pitch effect on samples stored on the memory card? I mainly use my 202 for repitching samples, so a memory card would improve the sampler in relation to my workflow but only if you can use pitch. Thanks!
There are a bunch of weird limitations with the SP-202 and FX because of the memory. You can find them on Page 31 of the manual if you have a Google around. From taking a look now though, it appears that TIME/DELAY can't be used with samples on the memory card. It seems like PITCH is fine, but with whatever other weird limitations there are...
One other thing worth mentioning I had one of these back in the day. I think I’ve still got it in the attic somewhere with my MC303. I used a midi clock to extract the BPM from my decks whilst mixing, MC 3O3 used only as a sequencer to fire samples in real time with the music by MIDI ,whilst I was DJing . It worked ! So yes, it is basic, but they did actually get some use back in the 90’s
I think I spoke about this in the video, but it was a while ago. In theory, it wouldn't work. The voltage is different, and it's also the wrong way around. Unfortunately there is no great solution that finding a proper card.
@@StephenMcLeod Thanks for getting back to me. Ok I understand it’s a voltage issue. But you have made me think about dusting of my old 202 to see how it could work in a modern setup pitch bending samples. Seems to be the only thing it’s good for anymore!. Keep on keeping on!
@StephenMcLeod i wonder what would happen if you ground off the corner of the xd adaptor so it fits... I dare you to try it... could end up being a very cool follow up video
About 20 years ago I bought and SP-202 for about $90 and never used it. It just collected dust for a few years and decided to sell it for about 100 I think. I regretted it and then bought it again for about $100 a few years ago. I then got a dr-202 and now I won't ever sell it again even if they still don't get much use :)
Yeah, that works for saving/archiving, but not so much for performances using just the SP202 sadly. Also doesn't help with the recording limit, which is why the card is useful!
Only a matter of time before they Gotek them, there's a mini sd reader that seems to work on old hardware, 1 guy will do it then it'll be a mad craze will opertunists flashing $10 amiga card sd readers and selling then on ebay for £160.
I. want. one. I recently bought the DR 202 and it needs its companion. unfortunately they are quite expensive used and most of them look quite scratched and used. wanna sell yours to me?😄😄
It doesn't work unfortunately. I can shimmy in a card into the slot the wrong way round, but the voltage differential means it simply isn't recognised.
@Andy Currie jeez man, did you watch the video? hahahaha It's 2MB! LOL I'm good man, I have two 4MB cards. It'd be nice to have another but I'm not willing to spend over 20 bucks. I can do SYSEX dump instead. My purpose is for use as MIDI and parameter data from Roland JX-305 Groovesynth & MC-505 Groovebox. Not for samples of stuff
At risk of repeating myself, this was peak Roland/Boss aesthetics.
Hard agree.
oh yes.

Yeah! I got one of the USB chargers from a place called myvolts which is sweet. Means I can use a portable battery bank thing. Top tip.
I sold mine to buy drugs in 2008. I just bought another one tonight with a memory card. I am so excited.
Just managed to pic one of these up, and this vid was very helpful in double checking it was the correct card and getting a good deal. Nice one👍

The voltage is wrong so it wouldn't work even if you get it in there physically.

@@StephenMcLeod Nice one. Thanks. I’ll check out the manual and probably go for it. Respect!
Just one question, did you not try cutting the corner off of the card adapter to make it fit?
I have seen ads on eBay where it looks like this has been done.
But otherwise a great video, very helpful and informative .
Keep it up.

The SP-202 is awesome as an effects unit thing. The pitch effect in particular!
I just use a Akai S20 and archive samples onto floppies. Or just sample straight into the SP404/505
Yeah, that works for saving/archiving, but not so much for performances using just the SP202 sadly. Also doesn't help with the recording limit, which is why the card is useful!
Wow..I have that exact adapter and some of the cards to go with it. Too bad it can’t be used with the 202. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for watching! You'll just have to find another 202...
where can i find the list of old cameras that used smartmedia cards? Gracias !

This might sound like a bit of a caveman question, but have you considered trying to file off the corner of a 3.3v card and see if it works?
It doesn't work unfortunately. I can shimmy in a card into the slot the wrong way round, but the voltage differential means it simply isn't recognised.
I like the inventive thinking though!
@@StephenMcLeod Good on you for trying it anyway.
@@davidlynch4338 If in doubt, force it!
I tried that years ago. It didn’t work. I wasted my money. I can’t remember what size card. I cut the corner off. It was back in the early 2000’s.
This and my Fostex FD-8 (scuzzy zip) are my most regretted and least favorite used purchases...
Have you got one now?!
@@StephenMcLeod Yeah somewhere collecting dust. I bought it off some guy who listed it on FB and it's in crap condition.
I have a couple of these cards for sale if anybody is looking for them ( 2MB 5v ) I bought an sp202 recently that came with 5 of them
Five of them!? What a bloody bargain.

Can a make a full Beat with only the Sp 202?
That depends. You definitely can, but it's very limited. Nowhere near the SP-404 for example.
