Just finished both episodes and this show has exceeded my expectations. Character development, plot driven, politics, betrayal, humor suprisingly enough, and brutal violence. 10/10 in my book.

It was a lot closer to the novel than the current 2024 version is so far - major differences in how the characters evolve and interact...Rodrigues for example is Portuguese and is actually a friend of Blackthorn after Blackthorn saves his life...

Expect more cultural faithfulness than faithfulness to the original story, because the story itself had many inaccuracies being written at a time when the author did not have access to internet to do research.

I have vague memories of the book (I read it as a child, very long ago) but extensive knowledge about the era and the real characters. I never really understood why Clavell gave them fake names. Is it a nod to the kabuki tradition where historical figures often needed fake names to avoid censorship?
The costumes and sets look gorgeous, and pretty accurate for the most part, so I hope it will be good. My main problem is that both this and Nioh are very pro-Tokugawa. Even the Aoi taiga, which focused on the first 3 Tokugawa shoguns, portrayed the Western Army team with sympathy and wasn't afraid to show the tanuki's darker side.

Only downside i see is the restriction of time they have to tell the story in movie form, compared to tv show form.
Come to think of it.. this would be an excellent choice to remake the tv show with modern means.

From his extensive filmography on Wikipedia, I think it’s correct to say his first starring role was in
‘Ninja in the Dragon's Den’ from 1982, though he had earlier appeared in some films with Sonny Chiba, the first being ‘Shogun’s Samurai’ in 1978. He trained in martial arts, intending to be an action movie actor, before withdrawing from performing arts for a while - on Chiba’s advice, apparently. Since returning to acting and forging a career on screen he has also appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company in King Lear.
That is the very truncated version…

HOTD has a slow start leading up the war but this , the games of thrones been played from the very beginning. Shogun to me as of right now, definitely fit the role of , If you like GOT, you will love Shogun and the fact the historical part of the story is actually accurate makes it that much better. After GOT they been trying to find something similar to GOT and I gotta say, Shogun is that show. People need to pick it up.

If you’re interested in a Japanese depiction of the political background to this period I would suggest looking out for Sekigahara (2017). I haven’t seen it but its reception appears to have been positive. I believe it covers the period of several years leading to that battle, and therefore overlaps to a large degree with Shogun.
Another to watch out for us the forthcoming Kubi, released in Japan late last year but yet to arrive in the west. It is directed by and stars Takeshi Kitano as Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the recently deceased Taiko of Shogun. There is an analysis of the trailer on Samuel Hawley’s UA-cam channel (search for The Imjin War).
Another channel to check out is The Shogunate, which is very knowledgeable about the period and discusses a lot of films and series.

@creenVids We can start by saying that “... the country was taken over by samurai...” This is the same as saying that America was conquered by the Americans or France was conquered by the French.
Read the book and get acquainted with the real story on which this book is based. It's not about this skipper trying to remain himself, but about his assimilation. He makes a lot of comparisons between Japanese customs and lifestyles and life in England. For example, he remembers his English wife with disgust after meeting Japanese women.
