I have been thinking a lot about the use of colors in games, so I wanted to make a brief little piece on one of my favorite colors, purple, and how in games, it often is used as the color of corruption. So, let's take a look at how purple is used in video games.

Hey! So, I kind of became obsessed with purple over this past month and wanted to make a brief video to talk about it! I hope you enjoy it. I am working on the next episode of Gaming For A Non-Gamer (yes, animal crossing will be played for it), but in the mean time, if you would like extra clips from the lady I live with's playthroughs (along with other neat perks), check out the patreon: www.patreon.com/razbuten
Other than that, I have been streaming on Twitch a bunch, so if you'd like my unfiltered thoughts, go check that out too: www.twitch.tv/razbuten
Thank you for, like, being nice to me and stuff. I appreciate it and you.
Edit: for all you Terraria lovers, I should have shown a clip from the game. I planned to, but then I realized I didn't own it, so I figured "well, I have enough examples of this, it will be fine." I did you wrong, and if I ever make a director's cut of this video, I will put a clip of it in there. I hope you can forgive me.
There’s a whole movie about the Color Purple. Check that out. Lol

Hey man, you forgot something interesting.
Purple is also the color of skin getting bruised.
When someone gets bruised, it gets purple.
So it may also mean that it's something that has been damaged.
It even looks like corruption; because you can even usually see veins or under the skin when it is bruised to the point of becoming purple.
Also, people get purple for other reasons. Usually when being sickly, when circulation is cut, out of air, etc.
Hope that made sense!
Thanks for the video!
i kept waiting for him to mention bruises and he never did
I also makes u think like its a parasite that shouldn't be there
Well, you are correct, technically... Have you ever been in a situation where you got bruised and it went from red->purple->black->green>yellow? The rainbow of pain...
it's basically this...and also the thing with the outworld because it's rare and special in nature (not much as blue but hey, there's the sky). all of the other stuff are just a big stretch ...
honestly, the fact that he did talk about all the others things he covered and not about the obvious things like bruising, choking or pustules, gives me the feeling he didn't really think this video through. Like, the entire way video games threat corruption is directly taken from Lovecrafts squid monsters and the way they corrupt things.
It's simple: in nature, purple = poison. Colour theory is a nice add-on, but the royalty stuff doesn't sound like it would have played a factor at all.
Most games: purple bad
Hollow Knight: O r a n g
It makes sense, though. Orange makes a huge contrast with the dark, cold colors of most of Hallownest. It feels more unnatural than purple, which would just blend in (look no further than Crystal Peak). Plus, the main antagonistic force in Hollow Knight is light, not dark, so it makes sense to use orange and yellow.
Dinoman972 Yeah, but it only works because of how Hallownest is built, it’s a lot of dark colors, including some purples. So orange in this scenario makes more sense than any other color, but in most games purple is the most contrasting element because most games are overall brighter than HK
Terraria: *R e d*
ShadowShooter 2.0 Well the Crimson wasn’t added until 1.2, before then it was only the corruption. The corruption is kind of, the embodiment of this whole video which makes it odd that Terraria wasn’t included (although the creator said there was going to be footage of it at one point.)
Darn, I was gonna make that joke.
This made me realize how clever Hollow Knight was in using orange as the color of its corruption. Since the hero is shadow-themed and the main force of evil is literally the personification of light, it makes sense that the designers near-inverted the traditional color associations.
Bro went deep
Greenish orange is also a way more natural way of depicting corruption
Alternatively they chose orange because it LOOKS like a bloated pus filled pustule.

The idea of purple being the color of corruption can also apply to places like Japan, where the color purple is commonly associated with death, which is why Lavender Town is the only town with an explicit theme of grief, dying and sadness. It also influenced Rayman's Japanese localization, as his body is purple, but it was changed to blue overseas to make him seem more heroic.
Also the venom type is purple
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the most primary occurance of purple in nature: at twilight, when the light of day gives way to the shadow of night, and the sky is purple.

Purple is also used to signal something rare and magical, and extremely powerful. Something alien and dissonant, out of this world. Not necessarily evil per se, just different, powerful and ancient.
Not something unnatural, so much as something completely alien to the nature you know and are familiar with, assuming I understand your meaning correctly

I’d like to see an eery/creepy game which completely switches colors around. A purple health bar which turns to yellow at low health. “Evil” things being green and blue. It’s minor details that gives an unsettling feeling but players won’t really know why - I love that type of stuff!
Green is also commonly used as an evil color. It's even more prominent than purple to represent poison, dark magic sometimes has this color (most notably in Disney films) and some evil creatures are green, like orcs.
I think it could be clever and at the same time confusing to have the colors represent the same thing but a little different: like for a health bar instead of green (plants) what about brown?(wood, some animals, dirt)
@@guillemtb1671 ehhh i'd say purple is more prominent for dark magic. but poison is definitely green yeah
In nature, there's a frequent appearance of purple that's not based on royalty:
The color of bruises, some infections, etc.
This seems like a much easier to explain reason why blood is corruption when it shows up in human wounds.
I was gonna mention this too. Purple is associated a little bit with a lingering injury, a weakness from a seemingly minor injury.
Purple is associated with death because a body turns purple when the person dies.
@@the11382 necrosis
i paused the video for this comment when he said purple is bad because it is tied to royalty,
coz the biggest reason should be because of bruises
falling over on the street and getting bruises, these are purple.
I don't get why greenish yellow is considered poison though, maybe coz vivid plants have poison?
I wonder when he came up with the name for the video as "the color of corruption" primed me to think of corrupt governements and people. However, after I read some comments another name popped up - "the color of infection". It clearly shows how both purple and orange fit this name in our world - both are the colors of fresh or old bruised wounds and purulence. And in many games these colors are used to show infection connected to living beings, even when they call it a corruption. StarCraft, Hob, Hollow Knight, etc.

As a visual designer, one of the main things that makes purple have its specific relevance, is that it is typically tied to a sense of mysticism and unknown matter that we are inexperienced with. This relates to how purple, like said, doesn't really manifest itself consistently in nature. It has no clear associations, so by default our brain will perceive anything purple as "unknown". Some social difference do however exist, for example in many regions of southern France the color purple is one of the most widely associated colors of nature due to the vast land covered in lavender fields. But to most other regions of the world, this is not the case. So with the other base colors having clear assigned associations, purple is the one that sticks out and indicates the unknown, the unfamiliar, the unnatural.

@@razbuten Ok but now you're mixing metaphors. Shit is brown. PICK A COLOR RAZ!
A couple of things I wanted to note that may be related to the origins of using purple in this way is that it's been used like this in comic books for almost a century. In the early days of superhero comics, the major heroes almost always wore primary colors, such as The Flash, Captain America, and the one who started them all, Superman. Heck, even the original Green Lantern wore a primarily red costume. As a result, villains (and evil in general) were typically portrayed with secondary colors, especially purple and green. Classic examples of this include The Joker, The Riddler, and Lex Luthor. Because of their association with villainy, dangerous substances started using these colors as well, such as dark magic, evil technology, and, of course, poison often being represented by the color purple. I wouldn't be surprised if video games use this convention for very similar reasons. Early video game protagonists (Mario, Pac-Man, and Mega Man, for example) also tended to wear primary colors, after all.
it's interesting that the hulk is green and purple. He was one of the first heroes to have villain colors. When he got angry he lost control and often felt out of place as a result. So his colors were chosen to show that he was an outsider even amongst heroes. I'd love to see a video game subvert the stereotype in this same way.
"Purple is a color of corruption"
Mace Windu: I don't remember asking you a goddamn thing!
I mean, their retroactive explanation for the purple lightsaber is literally that you had to master the light side and some of the dark side to get a purple lightsaber, so yeah, that example still fits in pretty well.

There's a DLC of the game Darkest Dungeon with a title that's almost like it, though instead of Corruption it's The Color of Madness. The OST is absolutely worth checking out-- my word might not mean much as a stranger on the internet, but to me it is one of the best examples of a more aggressive form of Eldritch horror-like music i've ever heard.
i often come back to this video just to watch and listen to the introduction again. the way it is written, said and edited is absolutely perfect in terms on introduction: the context is set, there is a progression and finally an implicit question that starts the video. as someone who as to write papers quite often i get really inspired by how this was made. this is excellent work, the introduction and the rest of the video, both separate and as a whole. i never thought i would be commenting about that one day but damn good work has to be pointed out!!

Another thing to note is that in color theory purple is the polar opposite of green-green being the most commonly associated color with nature, making purple contrast so greatly against everything we classify as natural in our world.
Yeah, not quite the polar opposite, just almost the opposite. They are far apart but they aren’t complementary. (Since it's green/magenta in RGB or yellow/purple in RYB)

Goosebumps. Exactly.
Razbuten is getting powerful with his editing skills
The first 2-3 minutes for the intro is one of the best I've seen for a UA-cam video. Setting the tone and the base line with explaining how colours are perceived and represented in games, and then providing a contrast with purple. And my goodness... 1:30 . you are going to say "... and then there's purple...", and then hit me with my favourite song from furi (my only chance). Nice. You then go on to explain purple's uses in games as the music rises and show the title card at the best part of the song 2:00 . The title card itself has yellow for the text and purple for the background(contrasting colours). The purple spreads in the background and then even spreads and covers the text... corruption. Nice intro...
Also, 7:00 i think there is something in star wars like that with the person's lightsaber. Cool that you brought that up
I mean purple colour in star wars is a lore breaker lol. Master Windu has a purple light saber literally because Samuel L Jackson wanted a purple light saber. Then the fandom made stories around his purple light saber which represents a very dangerous light saber fighting form that Master Windu uses, so dangerous and easy to fall into the dark side that the jedi council lets no one else other than Windu use it.
Purple is such a great color because it has so many variations into blue, red, bright and dark which all are fascinating.

For blue it’s also one of the hardest colors to find naturally occurring outside of water and the sky so it works with the ethereal and sometimes unaturual way magic works
I mean a lot of plants are blue, and you'd think the sky is something everyone with one working eye could see
but the two sources of blue in nature are arguably the most magical and ethereal things we see.
I cannot remember the exact source, but some time ago I heard that the first humans, even the Ancient Greek, were unable to see the color blue. And surveys/experiments with today's hunter-gatherer societies suggest that they are still unable to see the color blue, even though they are better at differentiating shades of green than the average Westerner.

I think one more aspect you've missed on the color theory level is how purple is on the exact opposite of the RGB color wheel to green (and, sure classical color theory prefers RYB where magenta opposes yellow, but I feel like the divide between physical colors and virtual colors also brings with it those different color theory codings). And since I love purple, I often look at it even in media as something cool. I mean, I get your point, but I do believe it's not as universal as you make it seem here.
@@ruolbu I'd say shades of purple just have vastly different interpretations. Royal purple he brings up a couple of times isn't dark - it's saturated and reddish, often associated in media with authority and might, usually in historical-ish context. Light purple is most often treated to be the same as pink, although it is still sometimes used as the color of corruption (despite not being dark): my wild guess is that it is one modern perception of the color of *pollution*, as screaming unnatural colors associate with chemical dyes, and plastic and whatnot; bright/lush purple being an alternative to radioactive green here. Dark purple is basically black that has light, there I agree with Razbuten.
