Forwarded to my Father to watch as he was a carpenter and joiner in Mitcham from leaving school in 1962 onwards and he used Mitcham Supplies a great deal in professional life. The S H does mean second hand on the receipt. They used to source lots of second hand timber from the film industry, all used once for set building and then sold by Mitcham Supplies. My Father also used both branches of Strowgers often. His Father my Grandad was a lorry driver for Hall and Co in Willow Lane in the 1950s.
My son attended 11th Mitcham Beavers and Cubs (SS Peter & Paul) from 1995 to 1998. The chain link fence was there then. I’ve still got his jumpers😂. This was interesting. Thank you.
@@amandasmith3716 Thanks for taking the time to comment! I've been given 2 laundry bags full of 11th Mitcham Scouts archives, so I'm sure there'll be more videos to come. The Wandle Industrial Museum have expressed an interest in this bundle of receipts, no doubt they'll use them in a display.
Used to go to Strowger's for tealights (nightlights) which were a mainstay in our house when we had babies in the house. They were a comforting source of light for late-night feeds! Loved going to Strowger's (Fairgreen branch)
@@marymatthews8403 thanks for taking the time to share your memories! It was a shame that the Strowgers at the Fair Green closed. I liked going down there just for a small quantity of items, whereas buying online leads to getting too much! A clothes line I bought in a pound shop didn't last 6 months. At Strowgers the fellow showed me the different ones on offer, and the one I bought has lasted 6 years so far! I could go on.
Hall & Co. had an aggregate and cement batching plant on Willow Lane Ind Est. I had an uncle who drove a large Rootes 'Commer 'cement delivery truck from there. I'd cycle down Tramway path and cut through onto the estate . He would take me on the deliveries for the day. Great fun during the school holidays! * I saw much of Croydon being built in those days!
I had an uncle who was in charge, as far as I knew, of the construction of Taberner House in Croydon. I remember one day he took me up to the roof of the 20-storey building. I worked there briefly in the 1990s, and the building was demolished in 2015.
It probably wasn't perfect and I appreciate we do see things with rose tints but I always say that despite technological advances of the modern age making life remarkably better, safer etc, the world was much better from a social and economic perspective in those days.
Thanks for this - who knew receipts could be so interesting 👍
