  • The Good Friday Music. Parsifal by Richard Wagner.
Daniel Barenboim / Harry Kupfer production.
    My favourite Parsifal on video.
(English subtitles, Deutsche Untertitel, sous-titres Français, subtítulos en Español)
I do rather like this 1992 Berlin Staatsoper production Parsifal. Sir John Tomlinson is brilliant as Gurnemanz; he sings beautifully
and subtly captures Gunemanz's misreading of every situation.
The acting of Poul Elming and Waltraud Meier (Parsifal and Kundry) is also wonderful; Kundry has no lines durring the "Good Friday Spell" & yet I find the understanding, that seems to pass between the two, very moving.
And though he is not in this scene,
I also enjoyed Falk Struckmann's very physical Amfortas.

The scene with the baptism of Kundry is in its own way a love scene. And love is what we must feel for her in this moment. Tomlinson has a very maskulin voice. We can imagine how a formidable soldier Gurnemanz must have been in his youth!

I agree, he's terrific. No strain; pure sonics.

He is great, yes, but I guess you maybe have ever heard of Matti Salminen or Josef Greindl for example...? ;)

There are many fine conductors of Wagner, (Kna, Levine, Solti, etc.) but I think, hands down, my fave is Barenboim. He really "gets" Wagner consitantly.

Blau.

Yep ,,, That was my hot take:
Gunemanz is the last healthyish man in a sick society.
He has inherited virtues and wisdom, but no real knowledge or understanding.
He does not understand the roots of his own beliefs and rituals, and he yearns for restoration.
He often reverses cause and effect.
For example here he thinks he is explaining things to Parsifal whereas, it is Parsifal that is restoring meaning to his explanations.
I think this production particularly emphasises this aspect of the opera.
At least that it what I think I was thinking at the time.
Its nice to know people read the the description.

Tomlinson always had a certain natural ‘gravitas’ that must have been directed out of him in this production. He looks like a confused hobbit. (Like Thomas Stewart, his top voice was always problematic.)

"How fair the meadows seem today." WHAT meadows??? Lovely music and singing, but why does the production completely ignore what the text is describing? Phooey on Harry Kupfer.

Yes, he sings about Good Friday spells. Where are they? Can you see it? I do not. This is why there's no point in going to the opera to be scammed by an Eurotrash stage director. Much better to just listen at home, and my imagination does the job better than him.
