Excellent - thanks for sharing this video!
Don Reno was the very best and they were a lot of good musicians. Thanks Jason.
Raymond McLain was one of the absolute very best banjo pickers that ever walked in a pair of shoes! :)
Where has this been hiding all these years? The caliber of the artists is Top Notch and the narration is very good. Thank you so much for unearthing this treasure! It is so sad to see that so many have joined the Angel Band but they gave us many years of wonderful music and memories.
Rare treat to see Chubby Anthony
One of the best videos on UA-cam
Don Jr. was rocking that single string!
I chanced on this and watched in wonder , so much talent
Don "dueling" with himself... playing his style answered by a "tenor banjo" style like Arthur Smith played on the original. Super!
an excellent document, will please everyone who loves bluegrass, thanks Jason...
Last time I was there was August, 1981.
WOW ! Can't help it, smiling so hard My face hurts. God Bless. Kevin
I love Don Reno’s banjo playing. Thank you for posting this. Reno sometimes he gets overshadowed others. He is a great humble man , and a great entertainer. When he was teamed up with Smiley. Nobody wanted to follow them . Super entertaining!
looks like Hugo, Ok, one of the best festivals !
it is Hugo OK
This is great, saw Mr Monroe a 100 times!
Great musicians.
it was a sad day when Bill had to close this park down. had lots of fun playing at this festival and made lots of good friends here.
This is golden, Jason... Thanks for sharing.
God Bless You for posting this utterly priceless video....this is the raw materials, before the festivals got slick and "progressive", before the Americana Jazzorama slop that we endure at today's festivals...this is the real deal when bluegrass was working class music. by and for working class people...I was fortunate enough to have attended many festivals during this time and I know nearly everybody in this show....to this day I idolize Mac Wiseman....Thank You for posting this jewel !!!
You're welcome! And I totally agree!! That's why I don't go to festivals, go to jams, or play in bands anymore. Real bluegrass is nearly dead. I'd rather stay home and play with my records than subject myself to the progressive garbage everyone wants to play now.
Musicians like this don’t exist anymore
Bluegrass is cool!
This is great stuff,we never had this in Australia unfortunately.cheers
Awesome
The real deal - thanks for sharing this. Really enjoyed the Don Reno footage in particular.
Thanks don't get know better ( Doug in GA 🐈 )
This is a gem; thanks for posting it.
Thanks for the great upload!!!!!!
What a great share! Thank you, Jason. Good stuff.
WOW
So awesome 👍
A touch of blues……Ana touch of Breakdown 😂 he was such a character.
How’s Buck looking fighting fit , out of the Revue and doing the full Elvis better than the King himself.
fascinating Chubby Anthony ... these are the only movie footage I've seen ... please give me some tips where you can see it .. Thanks.
4:00 got me good old Ralph!!!! Good video J Skinner! Where can I find your video of Garfield Washington?
That Ralph Stanley acapella tune is unrel.
Does Hugo still have this, I worked in Hugo for 2 years and never heard of any bluegrass gathering but that was in 2006-08.
9:23 "Sally Johnson" ----------Swing your partner
Rual Yarborough backing up Chubby Wise and Mac Wiseman. I think Joe Stuart guitar on the same. Who is the banjo player backing up Chubby Anthony? maybe Jim Fee? and the extra banjo with McClain family (not Raymond) -- and takes a lead on Black Mt Rag, I think it may be Steve Kaufmann? And who is Ralph's lead singer at this time?
That’s a very young Charlie Sizemore with Stanley.
*Jason* ,This is a great show! It has so much music that you don't hear in everyday collections. There is a lot more here than i was expecting! :P
BTW... know this is actually off topic, and i apologize. Have you ever considered posting an instructional to the banjo break on that Monroe tune, *Bluegrass Twist* , otherwise known as *Bluegrass Part 1* . While i realize it is not Don Reno, it fits the style so beautifully, i would love to see it dissected. ;)
If I remember correctly Bluegrass Twist is essentially just a basic boogie tune in G. I haven't done one specifically for Bluegrass Twist but there's a bunch of videos I have done that can be used for it. I've done videos on Double Banjo Blues, Reno Ride, and few others that you can apply certain licks and ideas to Bluegrass Twist...especially Double Banjo Blues. If you search for me playing Bluegrass Stomp you'll find a couple videos of us playing that tune as well. Although Bluegrass Stomp is in D, the same boogie licks can be played in G or any key. I have been thinking about doing a video for Foggy Mountain Rock which would also have a bunch of licks you can use too. So stay tuned.
Great video! Anyone know the name of the tune at 8:30?
It is "Follow The Leader" written by Don Reno. I now own the Stelling banjo Don Wayne is playing in that clip.
@@renoman Very nice! I love those kind of tunes (Theme Time is another), so that is going on my playlist. Thanks!
Is that Don Wayne on bass?
yes. he played bass a lot for Don and would switch to banjo for twin banjo numbers.
