Hey Plantaholics! What are some of your best practices or tips on how to keep your plants alive. Let's help the newbies out and share your care tips and experiences.
🌱💚🌿Hi Chris-i have all kinds of fertilizer for the different kinds of plants. I just follow the directions on the bottles. 😁
Vanessa Viera Was That worksZ read instructions. 😊 Great tip. 🌿
I get rid of nats by simply giving the plants an extended drought period. All the plants near the affected one get the same treatment because they tend to lay eggs in the soil. Plants tend to like being abused... so just wait till the plants start to droop and the soil is dry. Usually by then the nats will leave in a hurry to find a better home and the eggs they lay will dry up. If your plant is those thirsty types, give it water from the bottom. Place a shallow dish and let the water gets soaked up from below. Shallow dish means you can’t give it more than it barely needs to survive thus creating an inhospitable environment that the nats will run away from.
@@rosewaters2533 I bought a cactus that had fungus gnats and they spread and infested all my other plants arrgh! I was so shocked cos the cactus soil was dry and I didn't water it for 2 weeks when I brought it home and the gnats were still everywhere :(
Emma that’s odd, because those gnats are usually attracted to moist soil. I think your cactus was unfortunately carrying the eggs when it was last watered before your purchase and when they hatched at your home, they were able to immediately find moist soil from your other potted plants to survive and continue breeding.
I feel a great attachment to all of my many plants, I guess it’s the same as people feel about their pets. They are all living things.
Paul B I agree. Exactly how I feel about them. They are living things and feel a responsibility to care for them. 😊💚
Crazy Plant Guy Good man, I guessed you felt the same. Loving your channel!👍🏻
Totally true mate.
I got a Monstera about 3 weeks ago, and.... i think that i over watered it because when i got it, they had just finished watering it. and i watered it a week after, and began seeing some of the new leaf growth turn yellow... and realized that there was some rotting at their bases, so i stopped watering it completely. and figured id just let it thoroughly dry for 2 weeks. And today i found out it's growing a new leaf :)
As a recovering over-waterer I suggest a moisture meter. Game chcnger
xD haha I suffer from the same condition. It's hard being impatient
It really is!
Where did you get yours? I am looking for one. Thank you
I agree, just got hipped to those a month or so ago...where have I been
I killed a pothos...a pothos. Do you know how hard it is to kill a pothos? I did that. So yea, i needed this video
bamboo 😂😂 lol how does one do such a thing?!?
bamboo lol. It’s ok. We all go through it at least once. 😊 although I’d be disappointed if it was a Snake Plant 😜 JK. Glad you found the video useful. 🌿
Christian Esguerra I killed my snake plant every time, I repeat, EVERY time, me and snake plant, zz plants and spiders plants are the worst enemy
Rossa Toppinen whaaat? Really! 🤔 are you over watering? What kind of lighting environment do you have?
Mee too... 😂 I mean they were just cuttings but I left them in the water for too long after they rooted and they rotted. I tried taking cuttings in soil and they did much better for me though. I have to control myself with plants sometimes because I always overwater my succulents :p
Drilling holes on all planters or if not rocks as you mentioned. If drilling holes on planters i use coffee liners are a good way to avoid soil to falling through. Gnats were a problem for me for a while but i bought a product called "Summit 116-12 Quick Kill Mosquito Bits" on amazon and this stuff was powerful. What i did is i used a gallon of water and i put these bits and let them dissolved. When i went to water my plants as usual i used the water (by the way this stuff will not harm the plants at all). What it does is that it will kill larve inside the soil so the baby gnats will die. For those that woud fly around i used yellow sticky pads but these are a bit tricky to use. I have roughly 35 plants and what i did was create an excel spreadsheet with intriquite details of all my plants such as watering, lighting, when i bought them, fertilizing, so on and on to keep track of my plants; this idea came from a youtuber called Summer rayne oaks. Thanks for your super informative information...
Nad Wow. Thank you for your super informative tips here on liners for your pot with holes and your formula on how to kill gnats! 😊 Very useful and will try it for sure.
watching this after buying a calathea for my first houseplant...
Your pilea looks so happy! I love that you involve your followers so much 😊
Cathryn Dianne Thanks! He’s definitely one of my favs. And I love interacting with the community. 😊
New to houseplants, only about a year now. I bought a couple just on a whim. For the first 8 months I had no new grow at all and they looked pretty poor. Then I did my RESEARCH and found out how badly I was over watering them. Once I corrected that my plants took off and now I have a real love for house plants. I have gone from 3 to about 12 and they are doing amazing. Love the content on the channel keep it coming.
The number one cause of plant deaths is overwatering. Common mistake for new plant patents, even those with some experience. I sometimes still over watering 😅
Totally agree with you that over watering is the number one killer of houseplants! Great tips Christian, thanks for sharing! :D
so that is why every plant I bought died, I watered them morning and afternoon :|, Thank you Crazy Plant Guy for these important tips
I have houseplants and offered to winter over a couple of pepper plants for my husband. One was in a 5 gallon bucket another was in a smaller container. I tried to tell him the smaller pot needed to be upgraded to something larger but he refused to listen until the poor plant was so root bound and it had started to die. He finally re-potted it into a larger container and then proceeded to overwater it. It literally all but died. I took over its care and removed it from the soil, rinsed the roots trimming them up and rinsing them in 10% hydrogen peroxide mixture. I cut all of the dead branches off put it back in the larger container and literally left nothing more than a bare root sticking up through the dirt, watered it once and told him do not touch it until you see leaves on it. Happy to report it now has new growth and beautiful lush foilage. Was a hard to find pepper I had purchased over the summer for him and am very happy it made a full recovery. But had never tried the hydrogen peroxide trick and a friend suggested it for plants that may be suffering from over satuaration of one or more minerals in the soil. This also worked with a bonsai weeping willow I started from a cutting that went into shock from transferring from water to soil that it wasn't happy with. I have not had much luck before this attempt at keeping plants but now our home is filled with beautiful variations of all kinds doing very well and thriving under my care. And we added simple grow lights we found at a local box store for the ones that required more light, almost all of our house plants reside on a covered porch during the summer months but wanted to try and keep them inside for longer growing periods, and the peppers actually continued to produce fresh peppers all the way into December.
Thank you for sharing all your knowledge of plants. I had to get me a string of hearts after seeing yours. It is just beautiful. Hope it grows to be as beautiful as yours.
Trudy Falkenberry Thanks for watching. The String of Hearts are fast growers. So won’t be long before you’re giving it his first haircut.
Your Pilea plant is gorgeous
tami t Thank you. He’s one of my favs. 😊
♥️ the white planters! After watching a couple of your videos, I now want a Pilea plant!
Great information and inspiration! I learned how to drill holes so I could use whatever pot I wanted. But, I also learned that I can't have whatever plant I want. Living in an apartment with all north facing windows I don't own plants that need high indirect light (Fiddle leaf fig is one). But, I do own many others that do well in low and medium light.
Carmen Whitehead Thanks Carmen. I need to learn how to drill those holes. 😆 never tried it. Glad you also found a lot of plants that do well in your lighting environment. Any suggestions on your favourite plant that does well in north facing windows. For those that may be looking for one who have similar lighting conditions.
Well, it just so happens I made a video on drilling holes! ua-cam.com/video/UDUU7r-J0DY/v-deo.html I have a large selection of Sansevierias, I also have Pothos, lucky bamboo, prayer plant, and dumb cane work really well for me.
Carmen Whitehead really good to know!
Want to say thank you for the tips and let you know a SPIDER became my 6th houseplant purchase bc of one of your videos! Love the inspo and your passion for all your plant babies 🌱
So glad I found YOU!!❤ I have turned into a crazy 🤪plant 🪴grandma! I find a plant I want, then I come find you for grow knowledge before I buy and I'm enjoying them tremendously. My hubby thinks I'm crazy. I got my first a Peace Lily for Christmas & now I'm up to 40, so far. Thanks for showing me the way!!!
So much great advice. I needed it too even though I have been into plants for a while. I needed the review and learned a lot. BTW, awesome channel banner!
Great video! I use nursery pots inside decorative pots as well but also will drill holes. For my plants, top dressing with pumice rock has eliminated fungus gnats. I also use a systemic on every plant to help prevent other unwanted pests.
Please can you do a video about how you care for your plants when you travel or go away? Or what you do with them? Do you get a friend to look after them or do you have an auto-watering system of some sort? This is worry of mine as I expand my collection and increase the number of valuable ones I have! I really enjoy your videos, your enthusiasm is so beautiful and your knowledge is so useful! Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you!
You’re excellent. Thank u for sharing all your knowledge
Great info. Thanks for sharing.
thank you so much for sharing your knowledge so kind!
this was so useful! Will keep these tips in mind for my plants
Thanks for all the tips. I am a plant-rookie, not much knowledge of how to look after different kinds of plants and pretty much a plant-killer kind a guy....I hope I could keep next batch of plants I've ordered well and alive.
Christian, if you have a fresh water fish tank, that water is great to water your plants. A neighbor has a huge tank and recycles 2 gallons of water a week. We both use it to water are plants. My plants are growing better than ever.
HPE Teacher hmm never considered fresh water form fish tank. I don’t have one, but if I ever get one. I’ll keep this in mind. 😊
You do not need one, just a friend with one!
😁
Wow!!! Christian. Your plants look very healthy and beautiful, by the way. How often do you water your pilea ? I really enjoyed the video thank you for the tips.
Soledad Carnot Thanks! With the Pilea I follow a similar rule. I water him when he is dry, which is about every 10 days now...I also make sure his water is distilled or if it’s tap water I make sure I let it sit for 24 hours before using it to get rid of chemicals etc.
Hilton Carter recommends that you name your fiddle leaf fig, because it'll foster a relationship between you and the plant and you'll be less likely to neglect it. I think that's a great tip for all plants. (But it might get hard if you have tons of plants, haha.)
Heather Hui Haha. That is a great tip. I thought about naming them, but it would be very hard for me to remember all of their names. They may hate that and throw tantrum. 😆
Mine is Fiddy Cent.
Great info and your plants are SO pretty and healthy!! And yes, I used to water all of my plants in the Spring in Summer on Sundays because the soil dries out faster and yet, in the Fall and Winter I water less often, and I go by either if the pot feels heavy or if the soil still feels wet or damp!! I also use pots without drainage holes, especially a few succulents and I water alittle at a time, wait a few minute and then I tip the pot over and finish draining the excess water and they're just fine. Plants become our plant children and so yes we need to love, respect and learn to care for them properly. Thank you so much for the video!!😁🙏🙏
One question I have that you did not cover in your care tips is....
To mist or not mist? Is it beneficial to most plants or only a select few?? In the summer months I mist often, but am always fearful of how much misting I should be doing thru the winter here in Central Indiana.
Can you give some advice on this topic?? Other than that I found this video very helpful! All your plants are gorgeous Christian!!
Love your videos too.... new subscriber here! 🙂
I love all of your white plant pots.
Good video! I'd like to see a video of you repotting some plants.
I mentioned before, you've got to visit Bradford Green houses in Barrie. If you love plants as much as I do, you'd freak and be extremely in aww. Seriously 🌱✌🏽
I put rocks in the bottom of my cover pots even if the plant is in a nursery pot. This allows for air circulation and for the moisture and excess water to not get trapped :)
Just what I needed! Any tips on drainage for large plants?
I mixed up a small spray bottle of Citrus Fresh essential oil and distilled water and spray a couple times on plant each time I water them. Helps keep bugs and fungus away! I also clean the leaves once a month or so with this mix. They are looking brighter and more healthy since I started doing this. 😁 Hope that helps someone else!
That's really interesting. How much do you dilute it?
Really great and complete ! Why do you do for pilea peperomiodes to don't curl ?
Great video!
Keira L. Thank you. Hope you found it useful. 😆🌿
Now I know when to water my plants 🪴 thanks gir the tips
Love all of your plants and thank you making these videos! I'm a plant newbie! Any tips of where to buy pots? I really like the ones you have.
Adri H thank you. Always glad for newbies ti be part of the plant community! I will be doing a plant pot tour soon. 😆
I was told to use distilled water to water my plants. I usually just take a large container of tap water and let it sit for at least 1 day and water my plants with that. And sometimes I'll take a jug of rainwater from my parents' barrels to use for watering too.
Dora Juhasz Yes. I do the same thing especially for the Pilea. I use tap water that’s been sitting for a day. Really helps. I need to collect rain water and try that out. 😊
Great video :)
CrazyCactusCollector Thanks! 😊
Hi. I’m a new subscriber and a new plant mommy. Love your videos, it’s super informational. By the way, where can I find the same white ceramic white pot?
Awesome video! Thanks for including my ig comment (@plantsplusmoreplants). I'm actually struggling with my pilea peperomioides because I don't have the right lighting for it. Like I said lesson learned! Learned a few more from this video 😁
Anna Vee if you want to keep your Pilea , grow lights might work to give him more lighting. Might want to do research on it. Glad you also found the rest of the video useful. 😊
Omg 3years ago thanks to youtube suggestion 😂 the pilea is so cute and tiny 😅🪴
i live in a west facing apartment with only one slideing glass door, i just got a fiddle fig tree, any ideas on how to keep it how far from window. love your video and appreciate the time you take to teach us.
VSGAngely15 hmm I only have a south facing window and I keep my fig in the corner 2 feet away from the window. He’s been good. Lots of bright light but NO direct sun light. That’s usually the rule with these guys. Give them lots of bright light.
Thank you for your tips. I just started collecting in July. My biggest problems are getting the plants from a store and they have fungus gnats and have been overwatered. It seems like a battle to keep them alive before I have time to enjoy them!
Yeah, alot of stores seem to not care properly for the plants.
Really appreciate your tips and experiences. My father passed away in January and someone gifted my mom and I two Pothos. They were beautiful for the first month. Now they are drastically turning yellow and brown and has decreased in foliage by half. They came with a plaque of wood stuck in the middle of the pots. One has passed away like it was murdered. The other is still hanging on, but as I said it is deminishing so, after being in our home two and a half months. It sits on my dresser so low light, no drafts or vents blowing on it. I water only when 1 inch of dirt feels DRY around the top and it does have holes in the bottom of it's plastic pot. We thought since it was so beautiful and lush when we got them they would start to climb the wood soon, but both plants started turning yellow then brown and we lost one. What can I do for the other? There is more space in the pot since the leaves are yellowing and browning. I have removed the brown leaves but can the yellow leaves turn back or should they be removed? I pinch them off as low to the dirt as I can. My mom's heart is breaking because it's a gift given through condolences and we've heard how easy they are to care for but not having that experience.
Can it be saved? photos.app.goo.gl/9QP5n7aFcMHaDhP5A
Did you save the plant?
I would repot it, and give it a good drink of water, if the roots are healthy.
I would have taken the wood out too.
Sorry about your dad.
Hi, I saw a monstera in one of your videos. Which part of your house does that sit? Is it facing southwest or west/east/north of your home? Thnx and great video as always
Hello, first time commenting bellow one of your videos. If you have lived in the Phillipines, what about growing orchids and hoyas? Different orchid species and also Hoya species grow in the phillipines. For instance, Hoya sp. Estrella waterfalls, from Palawan. I think Hoya krohniana grows in the Philipines also . Both produce nicely fragrant blooms and are easy to grow. :) About orchids, I know that Phalaenopsis lueddemannia, Phalaenopsis schilleriana, also grows there, also Vanda merrillii, Vanda luzonica, Vanda lamellata, Rhynchostylis retusa, Rhynchostylis gigantea, Trichoglottis brachiata. All fragrant. :) And there are many more from arround the world. haha These were just a few.
Nice n Worthy advices... definitely important to follow if u love ur plants.thank for sharing.....n yes wanna know d name of ur little guy u showed in vedio it's cute.
vandana D Thanks. Glad you found he video useful. The little plant is called a Pennywort. 😊
Christian Esguerra thanks dear u r always there to help.
Hey CPG!! Do you sell cutting of your string of hearts? I love all of your plants but I’m missing string of hearts!
where do you get your pots? they look awesome
You didn't mention anything about temperature. I was wondering what to do with some of this guys, like the calatheas when you have indoor winter temperatures below 60 F.
Can you recommend a link where I can find info on plants I don't know the name or how to care for a few plants i have.
I have one generel question - I have a big monstera deliciosa and a kentia palm. So when I water them how do I know how much water i should give them AND even more important - with big plants... the nursery pot has holes of course but the one above doesn’t so if there will drain a little water do I always have to the out the big pot and drain the excess water ???
Need oil can be diluted with water and sprayed on plants to get the bad bugs and not bother the good ones - apparently. I discovered this information today looking for advice on spider mites as they are feasting on my succulents.
I love the elephant paw plant also known as pony tail palm. Do you have any advice on how to take care of it. Thanks.
Kathleen Collins One of the easiest plants. I give it medium to bright light. And I only water every 2-3 weeks. 😆
What do you do to remove white flies? They've killed one of my palms. 😭 I tried spraying it with a diy spray, but it was taken over by the flies.
Hello, what is the ratio for cacti soil and regular soil? Love your plants.
P Hull I use about 50% potting soil, 45% cacti soil and then 5% perlite or orchid bark.
Crazy Plant Guy any reason why you use more cacti soil than perlite?
Hi there. I need your advise. My plant is getting dark brown on the top of the leaf? What did I do you wrong?
hi. are you familiar with pepperomia watermelon? if so, why do leaves crack or deforms? ty
I've killed all my pothos, wandering jews, snake plants, ivy, alllllllll my succulents, all my peace lilies, root rot I just can't figure out the watering part!!!!!😭😭😭😭💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔 I'm about to give up it's so sad!!!! I got a beaded dragon to heal my broken plant mom heart and he's perfect and doing better than ever so I guess I just was not born with a green thumb 🥺😩😭
Brand new plant owner should I repot my plant when I first get it? Rn my peace lily's still in the pot from the nursery and that's sitting in a larger ceramic pot.
Freya B-G I would wait a few days or week before repotting. Make sure they get use to your home environment first. Repotting usually shocks plants.
@@CrazyPlantGuy Thank you very much!
I only have access to a north facing window... meh, no succulents for me. Ahahaha but I get to enjoy all the pothos and vines I want.
I have 6 dozen crotons(no idea)about the botanical names but I have these colourful ones 4 of them are fine but two of them droop.i live in a tropical country I water them ,in winter, on alternate days.
Where do you get your white pots?
Is that white pot made ceramic with no hole in bottom?
Hello plant people, I have a baby variegated rubber plant and the edges of the leaves are becoming jagged and some of the leaves have split in half. I did some research and it said it could be low humidity? It just turned winter here and the humidity is in the 20 percent range. I started spritzing the leaves with water and turned on my humidifier. Any other suggestions???
So Crazy Plant Guy, I have a South facing window 🪟, and underneath this window is a fire place as well. So what kind of plants can I put on this window??. I have killed rat tail plant on there before, super, super sad when it dies on me. This window does get hot on summer days and it receives lots of sun 🌞☀. Please suggest me some plants I can place on this window 🪟???.
Hi I'm 12 and I'm in the process of decorating my room and I really wanted a plant to keep. Do you have any recommendations for good beginner plants? I live in Texas so it gets really hot and my room is dark so it won't get much sunlight. Thanks!
I'm not who you were asking but I wld recommend a snake plant.
@@jamiehewlett4130 thank you!!!
Where do you get all of your white plant pots?
Sprinkle ciminon on top of your soil and this stops nats etc.
I have a snake plant, and I’m wondering how often should I water her? She’s quite big, and in a plastic pot. How dry should the soil be before I water it? Should it dry out completely, or not?
Helen Krane hi i came across your comment and i also have a big snake plant in a plastic pot, i water it once every month, when in doubt just wait a little more! Stick your finger and if it's still kinda moist you don't need to water it yet.
If you have a problem with nats, buy a sundew plant or venus fly trap
I have sider plant and the end are getting dry can you tell me why
have yo ever grown a Monstera Split Leaf in water or clay pebbles?
how often do u get pest on your plants? do you find that they often come back even after you have wiped down the leaves?
Michelle Y so far I’ve only encountered gnats. Which isn’t as bad. Cross fingers it stays that way. Gnats are always around because I have a lot of Calathea a which typically have moist soil. I get rid of them by using leftover wine 😆
Hmm, save the plant or save the wine😂😂
I weight them by hand to see if they need water.
Amigo lindas de mais ,deixo a minha inscricao ,se quizer passe no meu abraço
Get a daimond tip drill bit, all your pots will have drain holes
lol, I killed Aloe...
Yeah I need this
Hi! I love watching your videos/instagram! You have helped me, I’m a plant newbie! Do you give your plants plant food? 🙂
Christine Trundley Thanks. I only give a few of them plant food. I use a liquid plant food of 10-15-10 for the Monstera once a month during his growing season.
What about fertilizers?
Donnetta Daniels I actually don’t use fertilizer for most of my plants. Only the Monstera I’ll give liquid plant food.
How did I kill a snake plant.
Quisiera estos videos en español 😞💔
You need a microphone
I don’t know how to water my plants without killing them and I don’t know how to make and measure plant food, when I start using it my plants started dying 😕I killed my pothos, really.
I am a over watered as well
Good video but get rid of the background music.
Yuk bugs ...😱
I want new video.
Every time I repot my plants they die...
Bahaha!! What do you mean 'leftover wine'...there isn't such a thing.
No music
Never killed a plant
I am a plant killer 😬
Living Today 😬 Hopefully this video helped. 😆
Are any of your plants girls.....or just all guys 😂😂😂🌱🌹🌷🌿🌵🌻
Yes I kill all my plants....water...lol
I have more plants than him and I am12
