I packed for 6 weeks abroad using only a carry-on suitcase and a small backpack. I wore/used every single thing multiple times, didn't miss any extraneous "conveniences," and - most importantly - didn't have to wrangle huge checked bags across international borders like everyone else on the same trip. On shorter travels, where I won't be washing clothes, my one packing indulgence is always an extra pair of underwear.
I’m a mom of three and a chronic over-packer. I don’t know how I’d do this but I’m certainly going to try, even if it’s just to be more mindful of what I do pack. Thanks, Lefie!

i been missing you!!! love the hair, love the idea of folding... and loooveee the music in the video!
Always delightful to see you post. As a frequent budget airline flyer, packing light has become a skill of mine despite my past a chronic overpacker. It’s been a game changer. It’s so nice to breeze through an airport and not be weighed down by a bunch of bags.
Very powerful and useful vid. I agree with most of what you went through and agree that it is great advice. My variations are based on tropical versus snowy locations, urban-developed/undeveloped, and rural. Everything you did would be fine for train travel from Shanghai to Chengdu for example. For inland Australian towns or north east China in winter, some level of bulk would be needed just due to climate. I loved the background jazz as well. Very mellow. Your youtubes are an art-form.
THANK YOU Lefie 🙏🏽 I’ll do all this the next time I go to stuff my 73 bags of single origin coffee, favourite barista, and an entire public library into my travel backpack👌🏽
Glad to see someone else that travels with just a backpack. Because I travel quite a bit I have a separate toiletries bag that is always packed so I don't have to think about it. I bought a backpack about 10 years ago with 2 large pockets and one small front pocket. I just have my clean clothes in one of the big pockets (with my toiletries), and once used they go into the second one. The small pocket has my phone, wallet, earphones and other small random items. If it's a bigger/holiday trip I'll pack a second small bag into my used clothes pocket so I can take it out once there so I can buy gifts or if I need to buy anything that I've forgotten and really need. I do ranger roll my clothes, but that's just because I don't want to lug around a suitcase and I'll do anything to avoid it.
One of my proudest trips was packing for a wedding + a week of travel in one backpack (needed a bridesmaid's dress and heels, nice clothes for the reception, a small wedding gift, my laptop for work, and it was winter so a large coat & warm clothes). It was so helpful to only have one bag, although it was a tight fit and a bit of a hassle getting through security at the airport!
Ah, excellent packing advice and smooth jazz, a great combo. Problem is, the smooth jazz makes me not want to go anywhere. Damn it Lefie! Now I'm too relaxed to travel anywhere, let alone pack! I'm so angry and relaxed, I could just fall asleep! I---zzzzzzz...
My worthiest travel hack to share: I don't use separate bags for different types of clothing. Dirty clothes can be easily put aside from others by wrapping them in a used T-shirt or what ever larger clothe it might be. Also for longer trips I use a backpack with several pockets so I can kind of organize everything easier. I found that even with 30l bag and over month of travel it's still possible that some clothes are left unused, so I will definitely try to plan that part better next time :)
This is truly the first high quality packing video I've seen. You really opened my eyes on not packing things I THINK I need. I always have a fancy outfit I never use when I pack, and now I won't bring one! Your shirt folding tutorial was super helpful, and that backpack is the same color as my wallet and I love it! So many pockets!
Love this video! Your short format, very informative videos are the best.I haven't used a checked bag in over 5 years and the past 2 years I've tried the backpack only method. It's S FREEING. I love it so much because it makes the airport an actually semi-enjoyable experience (especially security checkpoints). 10/10 highly recommend
you just wont remember anything you read: apparently the human brain doesn't recognise stuff behind screens as real so we don't absorb information so well from electronics as books.
@V C that's a great idea! My granddad does the same thing whenever he buys a book and we live in the same town, so i always know when he's been nearby recently. I often see a book on a bench, look around and him walking off slowly through the crowds. It's somehow really cute.
💯 - I'd never put it in those words, but, yeah. 'Only take what you KNOW you will need'. My best trip only took a backpack and laptop bag (carry on). When I got to my destination I was able to take the subway everywhere. It was so easy. Oh, yeah, I keep a 'packing' list in Google Keep so I don't forget anything and I only pack what is on it.
The best way to keep knowing what you would use on a trip is.. Making trip every weekend! I did that for an entire year to go to my boyfriends who lived 300km away from my town, and now i can pack my stuff in less then 10min,including if i have to be prepared for a wedding or any sort of event 👍 (not even costly if your bf lives in your town)
A good philosophy. Once a year, I take a road trip by myself. I pack everything in one gym bag, so everything I am going to bring, must fit in that one bag (not including food or bottles of water, I know I NEED that). I do bring a satchel, but that is for carrying bottles of water and headphones when I go out walking.
Nice change of scenery. Visiting your folks? Thanks for the tips. I overpack for everything so these should come in handy. Especially the laundry bag. Why’d I never think of such a simple thing before?
"Unless you're traveling to the middle of nowhere" literally me 😂 This rule of "only pack what you know you'll use" still applies wonderfully thank you ❤❤❤
I also do this! Also, love this channel. I like these kinds of life-style channels and there are few ones with women I relate to! Thanks for making these videos.
I'm leaving the states for the first time this week and you're the angel on my shoulder. The rest of me thinks "What about the terrarium. Won't the self sustaining ecosystem get lonely"
This is very true. Unless it is about that warm jacket. For me that is always worth the stress for that one cold cold night where I'm very happy I have it
I agree, however, it can definitely backfire. Packed really lightly last trip. It was much colder than expected, had to wear all my warmer clothes on top of each other every single day. Laundry didn’t dry as quickly as anticipated. It sucked 😅 (I considered buying extra clothes but I wouldn’t have needed them at home so I decided against it).
Great video Lefie as usual. Nothing worse than travelling with loads of stuff. Just as bad as living with clutter. I am always amazed as to why when Indians, Chinese and..... come on holiday to Switzerland, why they travel with large suitcases and then have trouble carrying them around. I live and travel minimally. Also if you need something basic, it can easily be bought in most places. By the way your hair is looking fab. Much love from Switzerland.
Weigh the definite stress of brining something with you against the possible stress of not having it: that is a great approach to packing - and to owning things in general! BTW, your new hairstyle looks awesome on you!
I have been doing that for the past few years; and I am much happier, preparing for a travel takes waaay less than it used to take, and I am always the one with the least amount of bags... I mean, I only take one bag, hehe.
I do think you have a really good point, but I think it's also important to recognize the privilege that comes with this perspective. There are definitely things I don't pack where I'm like, "I probably won't need this, and if I do, it would only cost me $20 to buy one on the road if I absolutely needed it." But not everyone has that spare $20 that allows them that luxury.
Okay but that know vs. chance debate, YES!!! I love this. It sounds so simple even if it can be difficult in practice. Next time I go anywhere I will be mindful to remember this. 💕
I'll go visit family in Africa soon and will need the checked luggage for presents, so I'm trying to figure out how to pack only carry-on for me. Great video :)
Besides your wholesome content, your minimal to deadpan facial expressions make your videos fun. Also this couldn't of come at a better time, I will be embarking to Kyoto, Japan soon!!! Thanks Leaf human
I need to watch this over and over as I pack for my two month trip. The things that weigh me down are toiletries, electronics, and shoes. OH how to pare that stuff down!!! This trip will be my challenge. I normally travel with a carry on and a backpack. But I am going to try to cut it back to only the backpack. Laptop, cords, backup battery are heavy. Do you carry a laptop??
Where did you get that beautiful leather bag? I LOVE and have a pleather one of similar size and color but am tired of things that don't last for extended periods of time. Got it relatively cheap and has lasted a few yrs already but looking to invest in something that doesn't flake away...😆
Oh my god this is so good!!!! I just got back from a week long trip a few days ago and I realized I didn’t need to bring 4 pairs of shoes and 3 coats/jackets! I wish I saw this video before my trip

First of all, Lefie, I love your hair. Secondly, I tried something different on my last few trips - I folded my socks, underwear and t-shirt together for one cube and pants and extra tops for another cube. That worked well with my toiletries and electronics charging cubes. And I finally decided that I didn't need my Beats headphones since I have much smaller AirPods. That was a tough decision, that.
