    This has actually been an obsessive thought of mine since I was around 12. Having our home destroyed by a fire is my worst case scenario, I still run through my “save list” on a monthly basis. Over the years I’ve narrowed it down to: Family, pets, document box (because, though not impossible, it would be a pain in the butt to get all our certificates replaced), phones, laptops. The list used to be a lot longer but, not surprisingly, it was easy to cut down once I actively started practicing minimalism and releasing my emotional attachment to objects. Even if we do loose everything, I’ve finally feel like I’m in a mental place where I could deal with it, as long as all our family is safe! Love all your videos!!!

      @TheJroddude 5 років тому +3

      Hannah Amos I obsessed over this when I was really young but that was so long ago. I wonder why it stuck around for you into adulthood. It’s a complex trauma to contemplate, but usually the fascination dissipates over time. Seems like we just worry about random shit our whole lives and that’s what holds people back.

    • @elciamh
      @elciamh 5 років тому +2

      When I was young I actually thought that if my house would have burnt, I would be okay with. That's probably because I always felt like I have too much stuff, but didn't know how to get rid of all of it. If my house would have burnt, I wouldn't have to think about it (I know it's kinda not okay but I was young 🤷‍♀️)

    During a cross country move in a howling winter storm of snow and ice, I watched our moving truck flip and roll, which was being driven by 2 loved ones. NOT A SINGLE OBJECT in the truck mattered when compared to the value of human life. Both loved ones walked away from that incident miraculously. I've also experienced the aftermath of a house fire which happened when I was not home. In the end, things are things. Memories are yours to keep. Loved ones are irreplacable (people, animals, plants)...

    I know what I would grab if there was a fire. I've known for years. 4 things.
    1-laptop bag (contains laptop, charger, usbs and some pens and notebook)
    2- handbag (contains wallet, phone, portable charger and keys)
    3- accordion folder that contains all my paperwork.
    4- My overnight/emergency bag (contains 2 sets of clothes and basic toiletries) I always have this packed in case I need to go somewhere. I don't like to suddenly have to pack things so I consider it necessary for my life. I have used this bag many times.
    I have tried to live minimally for several years now. I consider these 4 objects to be my most important as I can live off only these. Whilst they do contain other things, I like the simplicity of only ever having to grab 4 things rather than bundle everything up to go anywhere.

    When I was six years old, the kitchen in my house burned down. I was the first one to spot the fire, then I run to get my mom and one year old sister. I thought, at the time, that the entire house was going to burn, that the whole building was going to collapse... I had been playing with a little glass chicken when it happened, and once we were out on the street the only thing I would say, looking at that little glass toy, was "this is the only thing I saved!" over and over. Now it sounds silly, but at the time it felt like my biggest faillure... That there were so many important stuff in that house and I didn't reach for any of them. I Just ran to my mom and sister.
    This video made me realize why that was such a pivot time in the formation of my psyche and maybe why I want but struggle so much with letting things go... That little glass chicken became so important to me, so vital, yet such a reminder of my inadequacy, that from that moment on I placed my things on a pedestal, my things became my memories and I couldn't get rid of my memories, even the painful or stupid ones.
    But then this video made me realize another thing. I didn't only save that glass chicken. I saved the two most important women in my life.
    And that makes means I didn't fail after all.

    I'm going to add another comment to the one I just posted because fire safety is very important to me: I want to encourage people to not have anything in a place that would block or slow your access to doors and windows if you have to get out fast in an emergency. I want to encourage people to look around in the places where you go to school, work or elsewhere so you know to get out in an emergency.---When the ocean liner Empress of Ireland sank rapidly at night in 1914, many of the survivors were from the crew and not because they didn't try to help the passengers who were unfamiliar with the ship's deck plan (the Empress had sailed only hours before) but because they had been instructed to know the ship's layout so well that they could get out on the open deck even in darkness. Even a little knowledge and preparation can save our lives.

    The Burning House was my absolute favorite and I still think about it sometimes because I really think it boils down the 'Do I really need any of this stuff that is SUFFOCATING ME?!!!' problem I have.
    I found it a few years after a hurricane had rolled through and destroyed most of our household including all of my favorite books in a flood. As a result I'm pretty laid back about all of it disappearing in a natural disaster and me being fine because that's how it was for me. Then it's just like a practical question too, like, maybe I should start adulting better and put my documents I want to grab in an easy to grab and go kinda space?? Instead of the mess my papers are in reality haha.
    I had no idea it was the same person that did all of that, that's amazing!

    Years ago, I watched a silly (but enjoyable) romantic comedy with Amy Adams and Matthew Goode entitled Leap Year. He asks her, "Your house is on fire, and you have 30 seconds...what would you save?" That stuck with me for many years. Since then, I have tried to detach from my material possessions. Yes, I enjoy them, but if it is a matter of saving myself vs. my possessions, I would probably just grab my wallet and my husband.

    I really love this perspective. I've been minimizing my possessions for about three years and the waves of decluttering are so random, but than maybe not- they tend to come about when I feel severely stressed. It helps me cope. I have gotten rid of some things that I would have told myself in the past I could NEVER part with. I've learned (so far) that any item I own, although I may really enjoy it, is totally ok to be without. The the only "things" (but not things) I would grab would be my kid and my pug!

    I've gone through this experiment a few times before. There have been times when I've thought, "I must keep it all!!" ...now I can't think of a physical item I'd take that couldn't be replaced somehow. Someone once told me they'd grab shoes and a coat at least. This seems reasonable. I could replace my shoes and coat, but it won't happen too fast if I just had a fire destroy everything. I love your thought on preserving that which is nonphysical, but I didn't think of that, so here are the physical items I'd ensure the safety of:
    1) My Bible (not just because I'm religious, but also because mine is a beautiful turquoise ish and you don't just find that anywhere, lol)
    2) A certain jar filled with some flowers my sister preserved from my dad's funeral.
    3) A coat
    4) A pair of shoes
    5) a blanket my mom crocheted for me when I was a kid
    6) My ID
    7) My phone
    8) My phone's charger
    9) My Dad's funeral card
    10) Another blanket
    The list changes now and then. Ideally I would be wearing clothes besides my coat and shoes, but eh. I could live without most of these things, so in the case of a real fire, I don't think I'd grab anything I didn't already have on me. Just book it.

    trying to get rid of stuff because I hate having useless junk and your advice of "imagine it burned up, would you buy a new one?" actually really helps me realize that i don't really WANT to keep things. i just feel like i should because I already have it

    I have thought about this off and on for years. I’m in Year 9 of my minimalist journey though I backslide. I have taken pix of all my most prized possessions that aren’t living beings like my Great Grandmother’s bowl and my mother’s Mary and baby Jesus statue etc. If something happens, at least I will still have an image.

    Where was this channel all my life

  • @JohnNoirSmith
    @JohnNoirSmith 5 років тому

    I live in an 18 square meters apartment, which is provided me by the student organization of Oslo. I had a 35 square meters apartment in another city than the one I was studying in, but I wanted to be close to school and the people I surround myself with.
    Recently (which happens rather frequently, if I am to believe the rumors, and I do) the fire alarm went off in the entire building. I took my time putting my suit on, but on considering if I was to bring anything in case this was "the real deal" for once, I didn't bring anything. The external hard drive, my MacBook Air and my electric guitar were the only two objects which went through my mind. But I figured I'd get by without them.
    So I realized: in spite of having gotten rid of everything which is excess to my life, I'd still get by if my current possessions burned up

    Done. I watched all of your videos in one sitting. I loved them, thank you for the fantastic experience so far. Also, your duplication effects are seamless. When I make them, they are always a bit wonky and all over the place, I really enjoyed yours!
    What would I save from my burning house? Well, if I look around right now... I don't think I need anything... I could repurchase everything I use daily, I only have like 70 items including clothes right now. Mostly clothes XD. All my works, projects are in the cloud. I would probably wake my family and dial the local emergency number on the landline phone, and help get everybody out safely. Maaaaybe I'll get my wallet from the drawer, because that has all my documents and my credit card, because that was a huuuge pain in the butt to get here in Hungary... Other than that, I think I would even be happy, that my smartphone burned up. I'm trying to find a reason to get rid of it, and get a flip phone or a Nokia 8110 4G, but I currently can't because I need it to make art.

    Truth be told, I think about this every month or so. I’d take my cat (first and foremost), my gray folder (all my important documents), and a tiny box that has all the sentimental things from my childhood. It may seem silly, but I hold onto my childhood with a relentless grip. It’s what I miss the most in life, and what makes me smile on the worst of days. My clothes, my tech, and everything else can burst into flames, I don’t care. Lol

    I HAD A FIRE!... by the way... it moves so quick you don’t have time to think about objects you have 5 minutes to grab and go. Until it happened, I had this idea I’d grab XYZ in a fire... I always thought I’d grab my purse and my dogs paw print and this frog that my grandma gave me... but you know what?! I caught my oven on fire cuz there was this pizza box I didn’t know was there. However, I didn’t think I could stop the fire and all I could think was about my three pets and my husband. I didn’t give a shit about the rest of the house! I wanted my loved ones safe. I think I did grab my purse but it was on the way out the door

    I had a fear of fires/hurricanes/etc. as a kid. I kept a backpack with my favorite photos and some essentials packed and ready at all times, and I would update the pack often. Now I'm a minimalist. Maybe being aware of disaster is, in a sad and emotional way, kind of good for showing us that we don't need to be so materialistic.
