    Just one correction: the difference between the logos isn't new vs old logo, actually the Soldier knife holds the Swiss Army coat of arms, while the Pioneer holds Victorinox logo. Same happens to current Victorinox SAK new Soldier model.

    Good comparison. Your videos on Alox Victorinox knives encouraged my wife to get a Farmer X Alox (plus a pouch) for me this Christmas.

    I wish victorinox would add that large wire stripper back in. I also prefer the bail hole not a fan of the key ring. Great comparison thanks Ben

    I have an alox soldier with an 03 tang stamp.. it was actually my first SAK that started me down this long long road lol.
    I carried it in my backpack all through university - replaced with an alox pioneer because i became worried i would lose it eventually. I also have a 111mm 08 Soldier that I carried for a long time when I was in landscaping and trail maintenance type work.

    At one point I owned 50 alox soldiers. I got out of SAKs and I sold all of them. One of the biggest regrets of my knife collecting lifetime! 😩😩😩😩

    Yar stamp: By default, they only put a year stamped blade on the Soldiers (from 1921 till today), but they used up remaining Soldier blades on other 93 mm civilian models like Pioneer, Electrician, Apprentice etc. - but in that case, those were not necesarily made in that exact year.

    I would love it if Victorinox made something the Size of a Cadet with just the Blade & scissors & can opener/ screwdriver that would perfect imo

    This is an interesting comparison, but I think you missed the point, or at least the title is confusing.
    Most ofthe differences that you point out are not related to Soldier vs. Pioneer, but old vs. modern.
    If you would take an old cross Pioneer from the same year, most of these differences wouldn't be there at all: the pattern on the scales, the lack of engraving plate, the thicker openers, the tang stamp - they would be the same on a Pioneer from the same year.
    (Although the bottle opener is a bit tricky: there was a change on the Soldier '93 from this old design (not polished, sharp edges, wire stripper grind, no notch) to the new one like we see on the modern Pioneer. But on the Pioneer, those things changed back and forth, in different combinations.)

    Watching this excellent video I learned that what I thought was an old version of the Victorinox Pioneer model is actually a Wenger Soldat (or Standard Issue, or Swiss Army 70; because it has no date tang but has a bail)! Cool!

    Wow just found my old gem find soldier. I was looking for the whole world to ID it. Saw one talking about this hole punch/keychain ring. I love mine. Its exactly same with limited edition pioneer x orange.

    I have a 1983 Wenger Soldier accept it has a bail so I think it is called a S I and was identical to the Soldier but was sold to the civilian market. I have owned it since '83 and it's still one of my favorite knives.

  • @SpaceDave3000
    @SpaceDave3000 3 роки тому +1

    Something you don't have there is a bailing wire on the Soldier. I far prefer it because if you're using the can opener tip on a philips head screw with the Pioneer, the nub for the split ring digs into your palm. You can just fold the bailing wire down on the Soldier. Something else I like is that the tip of the awl isn't sharpened with a clip point like the Pioneer's, so it makes a pretty good marlin spike as well.
    And the one thing I wish they both had was the extremely positive half stop that the bottle opener has, but on the blades. I've closed the Soldier/Pioneer blades across a finger before now. It's something you only do once, because you never forget.

    • @SpaceDave3000
      @SpaceDave3000 3 роки тому

      Also a couple of the things you mentioned aren't on the more recent Soldiers. Also the thickness trends toward the Pioneer's later in their cycle. The Alox Soldiers are no longer made, so the line ends with the Pioneer really, but it's as close to the last issue of the Soldier as you'll get.

  • @miklospinter

    Key ring: Some civilian Vic Soldiers did have a key ring, and many old Pioneers did not (not only "some special editions" as you said).

  • @norby0418

    You should have tried to strip just the individual wires. Seems it would work for that quite well.

    love the general design of the ALOX versions. Espcially the ones with the silver scales...if only they would put at least a VG10 or S30v blade on the knvies....Leatherman has done it for their multi-tools...even if VictorinoxÉSA has to charge a little more $...

  • @ivojankov7811

    Is the blade thickness the same?

  • @miklospinter
    @miklospinter 3 роки тому

    I see you had a hard time closing the bottle opener.
    A tip for the future: whan you want to open or close the bottle opener, make sure that the can opener is not half open because that puts tension on the back spring.
    (But because of th half stop on the bottle opener, it's not a problem the other way around.)

    I dont think the sharpening of the inside of the big flat screwdriver is an electrician tool.
    It can very vell be ment as a scraper that could be used for making or cleaning up a round vooden stick. Remember its ment as a soldiers knife. Mine ar stamped 82 on the blade, and hav a hoop over and into the holes.
    On the other side of the blade it is stamped 《Wenger and a crossbow (that reminds of a umbrella)
    Delmont, Switzerland, Sainless.》
    The rest is like you described.

    Good video, Sir👍. Another funny episode : With the original army knive (with year on blade) you can start an old military vehicle called "Haflinger". That was a AWD for two persons and luggage like a small Pick up. Was constructed in Austria. Funny driving, even without streets.. 🚘

    The pioneer is essentially the same as the soldier alox ,but with the prices of the soldiers going through the roof,it's much more sensible to carry the pioneer ! The soldier evolved from the original pioneer old cross anyway so it's a no brainer?

    The fact that the knife has WaffenKontrol mark means not only it was a military contract, it was actually issued to troops.
    Soldiers have the coat of arms of switzerland while Pioneers have the Victorinox logo.
