The port by itself is really impressive, but it's even more impressive that the soundtrack made it over intact and still manages to sound great despite having one less channel to work with than the SMS/Game Gear!
The C64 has a legendary sound chip of course. I remember playing this game on the SMS and I can still sing along with these tunes. Really memorable tunes.
Now thats more like it. The faster music makes it closer to my SMS experience, though some musics like the Scrap Brain could be done better. Really impressed by this version.

Not even the original version on the MS/GG could cope with these scrolling speeds of the C64! Someone really knew how to use every processing bit of that 6502 processor! Wouldn‘t be too surprised to read that the porter is from the C64 Demo scene. Those guys were able to program real eye and ear candies on the C64 then and now! Simply AMAZING!
omg I didn't even know Sonic was released for this system. I played Sonic on the GameGear and Megadrive (Genesis in the US iirc) great video, thank you.
Yeah, this is a port of the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog (also on the Game Gear and Master System), so it sounds like you're talking about the Master System. The Master System II in particular has that "bread bin" appearance and was known to come with Alex Kidd in Miracle World, though later versions came with Sonic the Hedgehog
@@bInbFVsulFZf2mAJ Maybe some AT Games console or something similar, Sega consoles didn’t really come with preinstalled games other than the snail maze on Master System, I think. edit: Nevermind, Wikipedia says that later models of Master System came with Sonic or Alex Kidd preinstalled instead of Snail Maze. Never heard of this before.
Y'know, if the Amiga managed to get a lower-end version of the Genesis/MD original or at least a revamped version of the 8-bit Sonic 1, the world would be a different (Maybe even better) place. But that's another story for another time. More relevant to this longplay: this is a cute port of the SMS version of Sonic, and a really impressive one too.
I must tell ya... This could got Nintendo crying If this game had come out in those years... On another note... Commodore sounds really fit 8bit sonic music
Does anyone know why it requires so much memory? The stock C64 has more RAM than the Master System. Does the VIC-II require much more memory to operate?
It is not exactly because of the memory, it is mostly because of the DMA-capabilities of the REU. Otherwise it is more like using RAM instead of ROM (btw the Master System version uses a 256kb cartridge).
Well obviously 😂, this is an 8-bit computer performing incredible processing feats....the megadrive was 16-bit so had a lot more oomph to achieve what it did 👍

That's because SID is more advanced than SN76489
SN76489: 3 square, 1 noise
SID: 3 channels; each can be square (with configurable pulse width), triangle, sawtooth, or noise
the sid is far more capable than the psg regardless
This conversion of the master-system game is really impressive. Incredible work
Super fast with good physics. This is brilliant. Cannot believe you managed to pull this off a C64.
Wow, they managed to get it running with only some cuts to a few animations! This is truly an epic conversion.

The programmer(s) who wrote this must be exceptional.

The C64 was the best 8-bit computer of the 1980s for a reason.

At least it's affordable now, so we can have awesome games now.😊

It didn't. This is a homebrew release that came out fairly recently. :)

Even it can keep up with sonic flying across the level in GHZ act 1
Besides some differences like 2-2 not having automatic scrolling, this is a really accurate version of the original SMS game.

It's still a C64. You just need an REU expansion cart to play the game.
