- On Saturday, February 1, 2025, Santa Monica Closeup traveled along the Pacific Coast Highway from Santa Monica to the EPA Topanga Staging Area in Malibu to document ongoing recovery efforts following the devastating Palisades Fire. With the highway still closed to the public, it has become a critical operations hub for rebuilding and securing fire-ravaged areas.
Residents and contractors need an entry pass to access affected areas, available at 1150 Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on designated days. Early in the morning, long lines of vehicles formed as officials distributed permits, expediting re-entry for residents eager to return.
Utility crews are working to restore essential services. LADWP is reestablishing electricity, The Gas Company and SoCalGas are re-energizing gas lines, and Frontier Communications and Spectrum are restoring communication services.
The Palisades Fire, which started on January 7, 2025, in Pacific Palisades, quickly escalated due to strong Santa Ana winds and prolonged drought. The wildfire burned over 23,000 acres, destroyed more than 12,000 structures, and forced 150,000 residents to evacuate from Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and the San Fernando Valley. At least five people lost their lives, and many others were injured. Containment efforts were hampered by high winds, which grounded aerial firefighting support and fueled the flames.
Although recent rainfall helped extinguish the fire, it also raised risks of mudslides and debris flow. By January 27, evacuation orders were lifted, marking a key phase in recovery. Cleanup crews are now focused on debris removal, utility restoration, and ensuring safe access for residents to begin rebuilding.

Let me also be one of the many to thank you for being our eyes and ears in documenting what's going on, the progress, etc. Your videos have been invaluable in keeping us up on real information and what's going on, particularly those of us nearby. It's very much appreciated.
This is such valuable reporting. Thank you for documenting LA history, Fabian.
Used to eat at the Subway at the end of this video on Sunset. Hard to believe it's gone. Hard to believe any of this has happened. Thanks for doing this and all your videos.
NO MORE SUBWAY FOR YOU........TRY CHINESE....,..
Greetings to Santa Monica closeup thank you for the presentation about the cleaning up of the pch and Malibu areas
it really is ridiculous that the mainstream media isn’t showing any of this
@ most locals (residents of los angeles) who use this road to get from point A to point B in their daily commute are very upset and angry that their commute time has been almost tripled since this event and closure of 101/pch. it’s a major thoroughfare, and omitting this information isn’t helpful. it would be helpful to at least show the destruction so that people can understand why their commute has been so drastically impacted
media loves shiny objects, they have the attention span of a gnat
It's ridiculous that the media and the citizens are not recalling the inept mayor and fire chief for not having enough firemen available to stop that fire when it got to PCH. Look at the effort, resources , money, manpower ---thousands of men and millions of dollars to rebuild destroyed poles and buildings/homes that could have been saved by a fraction of that money and manpower had been for fireman.
@Plutogalaxy For some this part of Los Angeles/Santa Monica have special meaning. I worked in SM for decades and drove up down these roads literally a 1000 times day and night. It is sad and I am very far away and appreciate that I can see it. This is why to me seeing workers doing their jobs is interesting.
I see my big cousin there ❤ he also went to Florida to help after the hurricanes. So proud of all of his, and these crews hard work 👏🏽
My sister lives in Vancouver and she was in Los Angeles back in October last year for a launch party of a brand new cruise ship from Germany but always enjoyed the hospitality of the American people prayers for everyone affected by the fires 🔥
Still cleaning up mud from last Feb. mudslide along PCH so imagine how long this’ll take🤦
I guess this is the beginning of the new and improved Pac Pal; "Mayor" Bass' demand for equitable and sustainable utopia. Congratulations.
Hopefully they can get some change in that state, before it's too late.
You think power bills were bad before look out. PG&E and Spectrum get the gold medal for raising rates.
Can't wait to see my next electric bill.
😢😮God Bless Your Hearts ❤❤❤❤❤
Did Thelma Todd’s building make it through the fire? I think you went past it but did not show more than a corner of the building.
Instead of taking the opportunity to BURY above ground powerlines, it's the same OLD shit. Unreal, you can't make this shit up....
exactly. it is insanity repeated and repeated. maybe the government is thinking no need to bury because we won't let these houses on the shore be rebuilt anyway? and they will buy out existing houses that survived? otherwise, they have the time and space to be burying those lines, and instead they put up metal poles and take down wood poles. wow, just wow. talk about short sited and a waste of money and doesn't help at all in fire situations that will happen again there.
Hey Santa Monica maybe try to interview with a Supervisor how much Time it takes to put up a pole
Hi Fabian. Are all the fires out now? I haven't seen any reports on news here in Ohio.
Haha… you pass dozens of utility workers working carefully, efficiently and professionally, then get to the EPA motel and its like a playground… not even attempting to put on a dog and pony show.
Too True, spot the braincell time with the EPA
That fire should have never jumped the PCH onto the beach side of homes and power lines. With the minimum of firemen, they could have put out the embers/fires that burned up those beach homes and businesses. The people there have every right to be mad over the lack of fire personnel
probably the only reason that grant carbone's home mostly survived is because the fire house is right behind him so they could fight his fire right away.
Dude this fire was out of control when it started, of course it would jump to houses. It doesn't matter how many firefighters there were.
@Summer-Kid You need to look at the topography where these homes on the water were and then look at the hillside across 100 feet of PCH. There was very little brush on this hillside, no, these fires started from wind blown embers. You are imagining the fire that came up from the north side of the canyon, yes there was massive brush and massive wind and agree, fire fighters would have struggled to put fires out with 80 mph wind, but this was at the bottom of the hill, no brush and little wind. these houses burned up because they didn't have fireman to squash a wind blown ember catching some part of a house or plant afire
Your point being?
Your point being?
Sadly this will happen again the question is what measures if any can be taken.
Can you show the street signs to get a better idea on where you are exactly?
Impressionnant déploiement pour remettre le courant, j'espère que c'est pareil de partout (en dehors de la PCH) Par contre les lignes aériennes, je trouve ça dangereux.
why are the wires not buried in a notoriously fire prone area? rebuilding is insanity
When I lived in England they used to have communal skips on the weekend, skips that would be available for anyone to dump stuff.
Milyen szép most az oceán part. Megyek nyaralni . Látók egy két villát.
Why are they using a private contractor instead of DWP?🤔
To expedite, and because of a lack of DWP. They are rebuilding practically two major neighborhoods in LA.
I miss Daisy bro
WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT LOUD MOUTH..........
@roberthenderson4466 I have no idea would love to see her.
build with bricks and no wooden telephone poles
And metal roof and water cannon sprinklers
Are they using generators to power all the traffic lights?
A YT vlogger based in LA just posted a vid about his trip to the Big Sur-Carmel-Montery area of coastal Calif. Very scenic. Unlike the coastal areas of LA/Malibu, the stretch of coastline in NoCa looks way more pristine, closer to a European standard. No thanks to you, DWP & SCE.
The department of water and power and socal Edison don't have control over what someone deems scenic versus not scenic.
@Summer-Kid They have control over how their equipment is installed along a street or throughout a neighborhood. BTW, their counterparts in Europe have been concealing utility lines since the late 1800s
...metal electricity pylons. The Americans are capable of learning !! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wrong way eh
