    I did not realise there was such a variety of liveries for the Hornby ferry vans. I have a later Hornby R738 which has the steel weight covered over with plastic and the wheels centralised with thin plastic rod. Bought new from a closing down sale of a model shop in Cumbria. Reduced from £2-59 to £1-99. A bargain at the time. No discounting by model shops in those days, all recommended retail price. Thanks for the memories.

      Hi Robert great to hear you have one of the later version's I must look out for one myself. Sounds like a great price for the wagon, if only you could get wagons today at £2.59!
      Thanks again take care.

    Hi Oscar, having had both versions, I couldn't agree more about the improvement in running after Tri-and/Hornby fitted the extra bogie pick ups. I love the look of the Brush Type 2 and it looks great pulling all those vans. The "Through to the continent" script on the BR brown version reminds me of the best bit of graffiti I ever saw - it was about 1970 at Liverpool Street station and there was a poster showing an express train rushing through the countryside; at the top it said "Harwich for the Continent". Underneath someone had written "Bournemouth for the incontinent".

      Good morning Roger glad you enjoyed seeing those items running together and that Brush Type 2 is a powerful model as those ferry van create quite a bit of friction. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to share that great observation I love it.

    I would argue that these are not, and never were, "toy trains". They were well made, expensive, and for their time, accurate models. As was frequently discussed in Model Railway journals of the day, with a little extra work these could be super detailed. :)

    Loved it. Enjoyed watch both sets trains go round, I also agree with the lovely shade of blue on the Transfega wagons, then the pantograph really was something to watch touching the catenaries without snagging, well done for that as for the wheel spin, I sure that must happen in real life but never get to hear about it, and it did pull the coaches anyway with no real problems. 😃😃👍👍

    I do like the like the fact you had Ten wagons on that train, can' t wait to see more. I have a little lima 31 class and have set some of my curves to deliberately snake to and fro with a dozen small wagons, but can't put anymore wagons on, until my new controller arrives or it just dies after a couple of circuits.. looking forward to more train runs cheers 💚💜💜😃😃

    Hi Oscar, I had one of the brown Ferryvans and loved to load it with Airfix soldiers for a surprise attack!
    The green Brush 2 still looks great and helped increase interest in the real locos - compared to Westerns, Deltics etc they are very much the unsung heroes of BR. We knew them as ‘Peds’ for Pedestrian due to their less than sparkling acceleration on passenger trains!
    Loved the Class 81 electric with the lighted coaches...my mate used to drive these and told me when he was running around a train he selected ‘Forward’ on the controller before the loco had completely stopped - there was a load bang from inside the loco, a burning smell and all the warning lights came on! He never did that again!
    Off to the SVR rail cams now to watch the diesel gala! Best wishes Ned

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 роки тому +1

      Good evening Ned, I think the Brush Type 2 was one of Tri-ang's important landmark models with some nice variation over the years and they must have made a few!
      Sounds like one of those expensive mistakes your mate made, I would love to have heard the sound! I bet his face was a picture.
      Hope you enjoyed the Diesel gala, Take care.

    Noisy it may be, but I’ve always thought the sound of this model is fantastic especially on it’s quarter speed growl. I kind of homage to the growl of the real thing. I think if I’d seen your layout in 1972 when I was seven, I would probably have fainted with happiness. I’m still quite envious 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

    Nice to see the Brush type 2 out. Nice to see the Brush logo and appropriate as the Brush factory in Loughbourgh announced it was closing a few weeks back. A” “One” “A” by the way. The A signifies a powered wheel the 1 signifies it is followed by an unpowered wheel and the last A signifies followed by another powered wheel and on this occasion model follows prototype (powered wheel followed by unpowered wheel followed by powered wheel)

    Hi Oscar. Great video on what was once a great European rail network using the train ferries 👍🏻 Transfesa is Spanish and still going for Ford parts. The sliding door was for trollies and palettes using a fork truck. Interfrigo was for chilled productions but a different type of wagon than that one but all the same representing chilled by rail. The brown one was for general cargo for Europe. Sad that brush at Loughborough is closing down ☹️ Cheers Stevie 😎

    There seem to be so many variations with these models. My 31 is blue with nylon gears and no extra pick-ups and I only have one Ferry Van which is the brown one but a later version with the thin plastic centering spring, a plastic floor over the weight and the square axel silver seal wheels.
    I thoroughly enjoyed the running today and was very impressed with the length of the ferry van train especially over the elevated section. Great fun seeing two trains pacing one another around the layout.
    Regards, David.

    You've just shot my ultimate video - those vans have always been a favourite of mine, and that 31 in that livery variant - I had played with one of these on a cousin's layout on the floor back in the 1970s, but have never had one in that livery myself - although one I do have is green, it looks like a repaint into a duller green with badly lined duck-egg blue and headcode 4C01 - unless of course the painting on the earlier models was that bad and it is a factory paint job!

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 роки тому +1

      Good morning John must be great memories you have these model locomotives as a child. Glad you enjoyed seeing the Ferry Vans and the long-running class 31 the one you mention sounds like a repaint I think the colour variations of this model were done with the plastic that it was moulded in with areas/lines picked out with paint. I imagine many have been repainted over the years to suit different modellers needs.
      Thanks again, take care.

    Hi Oscar. It is great to see the ferry vans. The one in railfreight livery was one of the first half dozen wagons I bought new. I am interested to see the bogie arrangement on the early versions as mine have the flexible rod to prevent them pivoting too much. It was probably changed from about 1976 when Hornby started using flexible plastics (e.g. for the milk and Esso tank wagons). In terms of the accuracy of the liveries, Ford definitely used to have branded international van trains of car parts, though the pictures I have seen were from about 1990 and the fans were a different type by then. There is a UA-cam video of a banana train of international vans on a branch line in 1984 (class 31 hauled too), though this was Geest not Fyffes. With regards the Transfers livery it is genuine as there is a grounded body of one on the Strathspey preserved railway in Aviemore. All the best.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 роки тому

      Hi glad you enjoyed seeing the wagons and the class 31 I think maybe the plastic rod was a good development for these wagons rubber bands are always so unreliable, since making the video I got some that fit which does improve their running not so much being pulled but there are much better behaved when they are being pushed with them fitted. Thanks again for watching and the great information.
      Take care.

    Good video Oscar it looks very nice in that green livery which is a rare thing for me to say because I always think that blue looks better on a diesel instead of green.
    Those ferry vans looked really good I really liked the opening door feature wish that sort of thing was still done today because that would engage more people.
    From looking online I found that ferry vans carried all sorts of different things and they were used n many different freight trains very regularly also interfrigo and transfesa were real companies and those ferry vans could be seen mainly at locations such as temple mills and Goodmayes yards

    Nice video, I didn't know those ferry vans had articulated axles or opening doors so learnt something new. I use to have a Class 31 many years ago but think it must have got discarded in a shed clear out as I've not found it since. I do have an Airfix version now which is a lovely runner with a five pole motor.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 роки тому

      Hi Rob, glad you enjoyed the video. I've since got the right size elastic bands to fit the Ferry Vans this improves their performance when pushing them backwards stopping unnecessary pivoting of the Axel/coupling as they push together. The Airfix version of Class 31 sounds like it may have a much-improved mechanism compared to the Tri-ang motor bogie.

    Hello Oscar, two excellent long trains to watch today. I really liked the freight, a very impressive performance. I can hardly believe that Bo-Bo could pull six of those illuminated coaches, the friction is so high on them. Superb to watch them both running together on your layout. All the best to you

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 роки тому

      Good morning Mr Snooze, great to hear you enjoyed seeing these trains in action I think both models put in a pretty good show those Ferry Vans are not that free-running themselves with each wheelset on a pivot I've since tracked down some elastic bands that fit and this defiantly improves there performance being pushed backwards. I was surprised when I tried the electric with the six coaches make a lovely noise. The catalogues interestingly but the coaches at 120mA each in 1970 and in the 71 catalogue at 140mA also the Bo-Bo electric in 1970 shown as 340mA and 71 at 460mA so having them split across may be a good thing.

      @@oscarpaisley That’s interesting. Are you using an original pad material or a modern replacement? You’ll know better than I, but I’m sure that cleaning car was made at the time those points were and beyond. I know I’ve come across those cars with the original pad in them, and washing and reversing the pad has got it working like new but that was on 70s Fleischmann points. • @28YorkshireRose12
    @28YorkshireRose12 3 роки тому

    Hi Oscar,
    I'm told that A-I-A means "Active-Inert-Actice" in relation to the drive axles. Apparently, only the first and third axle on each bogey was powered (in real life that is) and the middle axle was there to carry the weight of the loco. I don't know just how true that is, but it's what I was told some years, even decades ago.
    With regard to those worm wheels on the axles - That's not wear! we had one from brand new, and the worm wheels are made that way, apparently to maximise transfer of power across the entire gear rather than just on the gear tips. In point of fact, quite the opposite of wear, and there to minimise wear.
    What would Ford need with those wagons? - Easy, to deliver car parts, tools, consumable items, oils, fluids, batteries, domestic requisites like cleaning chemicals, soap, towels, hand cleanser, light bulbs, cleaning cloths and equipment. - All the small, and dare we say "nickable" requisites that any industry might use, either in the manufacturing processes, or in the maintenance of their staff and estate. So even with a bit of 'licence' on the part of Hornby, still a very plausible wagon, and probably correct to some degree, or other.
    At 18:54 My dad's first Class 31 carried the head code 4C0I. We have a later model like yours which has a different code. Also, there are spigots behind the head codes to locate the roof, and they are different at both ends, so the roof only fits one way round.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 роки тому

      Good morning Yorkshire Rose, thanks again for watching and taking the time to share this great information. It very interesting what you say about the gears and the transfer of power and the spigots on the roof section. I've bought these in the past with the roof fitted the wrong way around with spigots missing and the filler cap on the wrong side not with the grab Handels/foot holes, a very nice bit of moulding the whole model.
      Take care.

    I owned two Triang Class 31s. Both really powerful locos. Could pull huge loads. Great runners at low speeds. I could slow them down to a stop in the station very realistically. The Airfix version was also very good. It had the same motor I think.

      The Airfix version had a five pole motor that was much smoother in operation but the overall build quality of the model not as good as the Triang version.

    A1A means that there is one driven set to two spinning wheels. That is how a six wheeled bogie runs. The real Class 31 has exactly the same drive arrangements.

      @oscarpaisley  3 роки тому

      Good morning Mel great to hear you have one, your right they can be rather noisy models. I don't think they ever did this model with the ringfeild motor back then I'm sure I've read that any the late 70s tho production mould had become very worn and the decision was made to invest in completely new models for the range.
      Thanks again take care.

    Another great vid Oscar R357s are the "Ford Cortinas" of Triang ! Basically theres millions of them.. Ive got two RS51s freightmaster sets (one currently for sale on f/b triang 4 sale!) And about 6 boxed ones in various liveries.. Ive been planning to do one of my EM2s with the multi collection bogie ... Great shots on the AL1s wheelspin too ...Just like the real thing! Have you got a vid on converting the coach lighting to LED like you did on the station lamps? Cheers ever Ian

      Good morning Ian they must have made a few over the years, that conversion of the EM2 sound like a very interesting project. I've still not got around to converting a coach to LED's yet but it's on the list of things to do.
      Thanks again take care.

    Hi Oscar, You keep showing all these catalogues. I can remember them if it was yesterday. Where has the time flown to. Another great video. Do you have any of the 6 wheeled LMS box vans. They make a great looking rake. I used several of them to build 6 wheeled coaches many years ago.

    Dear Sir,
    I wonder if the deteriorated rubber band has released sulphur compounds that may have contributed to the oxidisation of the metal plate. I would not store rubbers with the vans.
    The plate can be easily be restored with a weak acid (just by leaving the plate immersed in vinegar for the night would do).
    Cheers from Brazil!

    Hi Oscar ,, so you had the lighting in the carriages operating ,, how is this possible unless you have the track as the power and running the engine from the overhead catenary or is there something im missing as in is this a dcc set ,, thanks for the awesome videos you put on youtube again.
    Cheers from John in Australia.

    • @oscarpaisley

      Good afternoon John thanks again for watching, the coaches are taking their power for the lights from the rails (pick up from one rail, return on the other rail). The Bo Bo electric he is collecting power from the overhead wire and returning to only one of the rails. This enables the power to go the coaches for the lights whilst not affecting the locomotive and power to the locomotive will not affect the lights on the coaches. This could also be used to have a steam locomotive running from the rails and electric locomotive running from the overhead on the same line. It takes advantage of the common return. Both controllers used must have independent windings.
      Thanks again for watching take care.

    In 1970, the Class 31 could be had with two different head codes, one for Southern/ Western and one for Northern and Eastern.

    How did you collect two of each of those wagons? Another great video. I remember the Fyftes wagons, but not the others. I would love to get a pair of the Ford Vans. Martin. (Thailand)

      Good morning Martin, I had been on the lookout for those wagons for some time. When I had finally got one of each! almost immediately after a second Ford one showed up so it seemed daft not to get it! obversely then you need another one of each of the others...
      All good fun, take care.

    Hi Oscar. I have done some research. The Freightmaster, (1973 only) has the Fyffes wagon. It says that 14,900 sets were produced, however it also says that 15,000 Fyffes wagons were produced so does that mean 100 seperate Fyffes wagons? Making them rare? I'm just curious

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 роки тому

      Good morning Joshua I think you’re right the Fyffes and the Ford wagon were only produced for sets from what I’ve read and available that year making them slightly harder to get hold of than the others. Thanks for the information take care.
