Some facts about this song:
1. The lyrics seem to talk about a romantic relationship but they are not, they talk about the feelings bts had when they thought about disbandment, so they are real lyrics from their true feelings at that time.
2. When all bts members listened to this song they all cried together.
3. In the chorus, RM interprets tear as the ones we cry, then suga says tear as something braking and J-hope interprets the fear of losing someone.
4. This is such an emotional song and is very close to army's heart.

Outro: Tear is a very important song. It is the climax of the entire Love Yourself series and serves as a cliffhanger for Love Yourself: Answer.
In Episode 6 of their docu-series Break The Silence, Suga revealed that “Outro: Tear” was written when the band was considering a breakup. “When I played the song for the members we all cried together.”
“The lyrics for ‘Tear’ were written for the members,” he explained. “When I was writing the melody, at the time, we were deeply contemplating whether we should quit or not. When I played the song for the members we all cried together.”
“Outro: Tear” is a darker reflection of what it means to love and the significance of goodbyes when loving someone. With the knowledge that the song is actually about possible disbandment, many of its lyrics can now be interpreted under a different light, such as the opening lines of the second and fifth verses:
“We walked towards the same place
But this place becomes our last”
RM (who raps in sadness), Suga (who raps with rage), and j-hope (who raps with disbelief) repeat these lyrics on the track. Evidently, when BTS first started out, the members all shared a similar dream of being successful. However, with the group’s newfound fame and launch into the international market, the shared dream became a topic of conflict rather than one of hope. The following lines address this topic:
“Although we used to talk about forever
Now we break each other without mercy”
In 2018, BTS was discussing the possible renewal of its contract with the group’s label, BigHit. While the members were uncertain about quitting, it is clear that the decision to disband would have been made with great difficulty.
“Outro: Tear” reads like a breakup song, and its overall angst reveals how hard each member would have taken a split through lyrics like:
“Although we thought that we dreamed the same dream
That dream has finally become a dream”
In the same episode, RM shares further sentiments on why it was such a daunting decision. He explained how BTS is more than just the group’s seven members:
“It doesn’t belong to anyone. It’s like an imaginary, momentary rainbow that’s been created by ourselves and the people who help us. It is going to disappear someday, so we have to stay humble and reflect on ourselves. I think it’s important for us to spend more time reflecting on these things.”
Outro: Tear can also be seen as the exact opposite of Outro: Her (from the same album series, Love Yourself, which has an antithesis structure) as the chorus of Outro: Tear, mirrors and echos the chorus for Outro: Her:

When the songs ends, it builds intensely as any good climax would. Each rapper lets out all their pain and frustration ending with J-Hope’s furious rap until all we’re left with is his heavy breathing at the very end. It’s somehow satisfying and unsatisfying all at once.
But there is a reason for that.
The reason for that is that it’s not the end. It’s the end of the song. But it’s not the end of the story. Remember this is the climax of the story that is told throughout the Love Yourself album series. It is the conflict reaching its peak. It’s everything the story has building up to before it reaches its resolution.
And it hasn’t just been building up to the end of this relationship. But to the very destruction of the self. Everything they had become, everything they believed, everything they were. Completely and utterly destroyed. They had risked so much and played a dangerous game. And they lost.
Now they have to pay the price.
But this is not how the story ends. If you analyse the Love Yourself series, LY: Her serves as the idealisation of love and LY: Tear shows the crushing realisation that said love was fake and unhealthy. LY: Answer would then be a story of self discovery and growing into the person you want to be. Well the reason that Outro: Tear is the climax is because it is the metaphorical death before the rebirth. That is the real meaning behind Love Yourself: Tear…
Sometimes you need to destroy everything that once was in order to rebuild everything anew.
It is the “end”. But after every “end” there comes a new beginning. And this Outro: Tear is the climax of this transformation when they must turn into ash.
This is BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN! I have Love Yourself tattooed on my arm. Starting with Her and ending with Answer. I colored in the heart for answer bc I am symbolizing that the beauty is in the answer which is to love myself.
What’s even more amazing with this analysis is that we are now in a similar position with BTS AND ARMY. This break can be seen as a death and a transition to a new birth. I can only imagine the music that will come from this experience of the members and of ARMY.

I don't think you caught it but in RM's verse, it's tear as in crying but in Yoongi's verse, it's tear as in ripping something. They use the word in both ways in the same song.
This performance was the first time I realized rap could be emotional. The amount of emotion Hobi closed with made me almost cry, becuase you feel their pain about that year they almost disbanded becuase of how difficult things were but they were going to push through as seven.
RM- Tear pronounced as is Crying tears
Suga- Tear pronounced as in tear apart
Jhope- Fear the underlying feeling for both
This is one of my favourite BTS rap song. the emotion coming through them rapping is so raw and real, this is their story.

BTS gives 1000 percent in every performance. This song is heartbreaking and raw because it’s about when they were thinking about disbanding so it’s a very personal and emotional performance. I would love to see you react again knowing this and looking at the lyrics in a different light.
What I always find stunning is that J-Hope (who came in 2nd and last) was not a rapper when he started with BTS, he was a street dancer and is an amazing dancer. He learned to rap from RM and Suga, the first 2 members of the group. To listen to him now, you would never know this. The rap line just crushes every time. Thanks for doing this amazing song. 💜🇨🇦
I think to me this song is one of the reasons BTs is still together. When they had a break away to talk about breaking up Suga wrote and played this song for the others and brought them all to tears. They made it through that time and I feel this song embodies how hard it was and RMs verse and JHopes wrote lyrics that fit so well. It’s such a powerful song. And Army didn’t know for many years what the true background of the song was and that makes the live so much more impactful.
One of my favorite rapline songs.
Seeing this live has been one of the highlights of my life. You could feel the base through your whole body and watching them getting so intensely into was a religious experience.

BTS was only 6 years out of debut when they booked out TWO nights at Wembley Stadium, a feat that only 10 artists have done because it's incredibly hard to fill, not to mention must generate enough revenue via high ticket prices. It's incredible because only the best of the best English-speaking Western artists manage to do so, yet BTS manage this feat all from organic growth to global popularity.
Looooooove this song. Their live performances of this are fire!! This is the best one. Thanks to BTS many of us can appreciate rap like never before.

Hi, thanks for the reaction !! This song has a deep meaning ... the song is not repetitive because there are the same words but with different meanings. So, if you know the meaning behind the words, when you listen to the song again it will sound VERY different.
The song was composed when they were thinking of breaking up and when all 7 members listened to the songs they cried together because this song means a lot to them.

Has anyone mentioned that they are rapping to each other about each other? The members were on the edge of breaking up at that time. The pressure was really intense. The emotions culminated in this song. Pretty unusual for a group to be this honest about this kind of stuff while they're going through it. Respect.
1st RM's Tear is crying tear. 2nd Suga's Tear is tearing a part type of tear, then 3rd JHope's fear. So tear chorus is not as repetitivevas as you think.
I LOOOOOOVE Outro: Tear even though the subject and the meaning behind it is devastating. But I guess that's what makes it so powerful, that they were right there on the edge, but somehow found their way (maybe not even back, but created a new path together) and came back stronger because of it. I respect them a lot and also showing this vulnerablle side of themselves. To me, it's a masterpiece. Like you said, the contrast of music and the hard rapping. The brilliant use of autotune on SUGA's part where he raps about tearing (apart) which the heavy autotune sounds like it does to the vocal and thereby emphasizing what he's rapping about. I just love this song so much, despite all the hurt. One of my absolute favorites. and the writing is just sublime. Love the hidden "T.E.A.R" (which is also a gried model). This psychologist applauds them.

The use of the heteronyms “tear” and well… “tear” (lol) followed by the abstract noun “fear” is so smart:
1- RM’s “tear”- in simple terminology; refers to crying. Hence, “you’re my tear” suggesting that getting separated from the group would project nothing but pain and sadness in his life.
2: Suga’s “You’re my tear”- as heard in his pronunciation (as well as Jhope’s two diff pronunciations at the end) refers to something being torn apart therefore, alluding to him confessing that being seperated from the group would shatter or as such “tear” him apart.
3: j hope’s “you’re my fear” indicates that he values and cherishes the group so much so to a point where he “fears” losing them would also completely destroy him as a person.

This song and performance is meant to be raw because it is very personal to the members and army. Suga wrote this for the members during a very difficult time for them as a band. They were debating whether or not to disband at the time so that is why you see such raw emotion in this performance. No matter how many times I see it, I always am left in tears.
Praise be! Yes this performance is outstanding and yes on stage they give it everything. It’s the whole point I think for them, to connect with an audience. All seven seem pretty gentle spirits but put a microphone in their hands and a spotlight on them and something gets unleashed!

One of my favs from rap line ever! It's about the fear of separation of BTS members. There was one time they wre so unmotivated and in a kind of crossroads, specially JHope, that they thought about leaving. 💜

Thank you for reacting to this! At first hand you'd think this is about a heartbreak caused by the end of an romantic relationship, but it's not. This song means so much for army and BTS 'cause it's actually talking about all the feelings the guys had as they were thinking about disbanding. This is from 2018 which was really hard year because of all the haters.

I’d also recommend DKDKTV explanations in general when they’re available for BTS songs because they offer cultural context and explain Korean sayings that I would have missed otherwise because I don’t know the language.

Every raper has a different interpretation just like you said you felt different emotions.
RM is tear of crying, which is why you felt sadness he expresses that
Suga expressed anger because his tear meant breaking like tearing apart.. he’s the one that said burn it
And the last one is J hope he was more dramatic because he represented the fear.. so you can see the different phases of losing someone sadness, anger, fear… and it’s not only lossing a lover but could be a friend, family member, etc.

...and the really sad part is this was written by them for and about them when they were considering disbandment in 2018. That said, yes, you can relate it to any breakup really.
