  • Printing with the Epson P600 has changed how I feel about maintaining a printer in my studio. The ease of use and professional results are simply fantastic. For the money you get pigment class printing in a simple package. This is probably my favorite piece of photography equipment to come out in the last few years.

    Hi Ted,
    regarding your comment that the P600 could not do transparency film for digital negatives, according to some users in the Largeformatforum it works works at least with Pictorio Ultra Premium (btw, this was a direct respose to your comment in the video), also, the Piezo guys will come up with a special inkset for DN for the P600 as well.

    I wasn't even looking to get into printing, but I got a Canon Pixma Pro 100 this month and it's awesome!. It was only $49 shipped and I got 50 free sheets of 13x19 paper too. I'm thrilled now and really enjoy the process of printing. I used to be satisfied with the pro labs, but these inkjet prints meet or exceed the quality I was getting. Hands down better than a drugstore print...about equal to Adoramapix, which I use for 16x20's. It prints on canvas too and any type of paper. Ink's expensive, but it is for any printer and you can save if you shop around or want to go into 3rd party inks. I haven't gotten that far yet, but saw some other videos of those who got good results and save $ that way. Now I'm waiting on mats to mount them.

    Maybe a future episode talking about the various printing options today when it comes to digital, especially in terms of say, printing 13x19 for archiving images. Are all printing options equal when if comes to archiving? If you want to sell prints, which print method is not suited for that purpose? Which printing method is better for B&W and which for colour. Personally I'd have my images printed at the local Kodak shop, and I've been wondering about printing methods and longevity of inks when exposed to UV light when displayed in a room (direct sunlight obviously a no-no in any case I'm sure)
    Thanks for another cool episode Ted.

    Thanks. Based on your review, I bought the P600.
    I really appreciate the comments about Ben Long on Lynda.com. His work jerked me out of a funk I found myself in due to seeing endless iPhone photos turned into Photoshop fantasies at exhibitions, street shows, etc.
    I pushed my first shutter release on Nikon FGs shooting Kodachrome and tri-X. I was going to hang it up. I was so depressed by the utter crap I was seeing everywhere that my whole studio was going on the block.
    Ben's work on Lynda changed all that moping about and got me learning again. Lynda.com and Ben's attitude in general turned things around for me.
    I highly recommend your channel, Lynda.com and anything Ben puts out.

    Thank you for all the good information. I am currently deciding between the P600 or the P800. I don't think the extra $550.00 and the added cost for the ink is worth the 4". From the 13" to 17" width. Now the tanks are much larger in the 800. 80ml compared to 25.9ml so the cost per ml is actually 63% cheaper for the 800 to operate so that had me thinking about it. But after watching you and watching a 800 review I think I will go with the 600. I to do a lot of B&W so getting a printer that gives a good result is important to me. Thanks.

    Good morning Ted, this is a very interesting and helpful video. A lot of useful information about printing. I have a technical question though. I love metal prints And I normally get mine from Adorama. But do you think it's possible to print on an adhsive film and apply that yourself to a metal substrate.? That might sound strange maybe it's because I don't know exactly how metal prints are made. But do you think it's possible to print your photo & applied it to metal or even acrylic?. Thanks Ted

    Hi Ted,
    I'm interested to print photo at home since i'm not satisfied by classical solutions (website, or cheap printers). I ask this week if a photography laboratory can print one of my pics. Its job was okay by the price a bit high for the result.
    So I got several question after watching your video :
    - What are main criteria to choose a printer (dpi, number of color, paper format) ? I don't think size or speed are important ...
    - Do you know other good printers ?
    - Why not by a cheaper printer ? Not something like 100$ but around 400$ ?
    - How much do you estimate the price for a photo with this one ?
    - How do you manage the different size of paper in your printer ? Do you use a paper roll ?
    By the way, great videos, great pictures !

  • @KennethWuAU
    @KennethWuAU 8 років тому

    What's your opinion on using 3rd party inks and refills? According to some blogs 3rd party inks can prolong the life of your printer. Every time your printer inks get changed, your printer does a purge cycle. This uses inks, but also purges ink carts you didn't change. That's wasteful. The way around it is to use 3rd party inks.
    So every time you do a change, you change out all your inks to fresh ones. They get purged, and the old ones get topped up. The upshot from all this is the printer only does one purge cycle per single cart change vs. purging multiple times on the unchanged set of inks when you do single cart changes. A lot less purges = less inks used = longer life.
    What's your thoughts on using 3rd party inks? I would use good 3rd party inks for longevity alone if it's an inkjet you really like. Price is secondary for me.

  • @onionkeeper
    @onionkeeper 8 років тому +1

    Hello Ted! Love your channel. I use either pictorico or permajet transparencies with the p600. I've had no problem with either. I got the printer primarily to make negatives for contact printing (mainly cyanotyping). I have not read anywhere that there should be a problem, most alt printers seem to go with epson. Perhaps you are thinking of uncoated, plain transparencies? I've tried some cheaper inkjet transparency media but wouldn't recommend it, as they use a sticky surface to absorb the ink, which makes them attract dust and fingerprints.

    • @theartofphotography
      @theartofphotography  8 років тому

      +The Art of Photography Hi Ted another great topic in your show and I agree with onionkeeper, for uncoated transparency the Epson are not best but no problem to use pictorico and they give you absolutely the best results (on any printer). Coated transparencies are also usable but in most cases you need two prints stacked to get the correct density.
      Pictorico works with 3000/3880 and P600/P800 just great.

    What the cost per print come out to, especially compared to pro lab printing? When I last looked it up, a few years ago, it was 3 to 4x more costly to print at home on inkjet when compared to giving the work to a photo lab; and that was even before amortization of the printer itself.

This is actually a big deal and if it is really true that you are withholding this kind of crucial information, we as consumers can't really take your opinions about these kind of products seriously.
