I just purchased and started to use my first rag quilt die. The packaging recommends one layer only of any fabric. I may try 2 layers of cotton in the future. The cleaning information is so helpful. Thank you!!
I always recommend using Accuquilts instructions. I’m a bit of a rebel though and like to see how many layers I can cut at once. Ha! Happy quilting Frances 😊
I use a piece of paper to cover my die first and then layer my fabric on my die and run it through the cutter. I have little or no threads on my rag quilt dies. Yes, I waste a lot of paper but I would rather do that than pick the threads out of the die. lol. I'm lazy. I used a Studio die on my Sizzix Big Shot Pro.
I cut out 120 squares of flannel today with my brand new 8.5 rag die, I had to stop and clean out the blades every time I run a cut of fabric thru and sometimes I had to finish cutting my fabric with my scissors because the blades didn’t cut thru, is this normal?
Claudette- I used the 8.5” Rag Quilt die. I have a whole Playlist for rag quilting. You can view that here: ua-cam.com/play/PLC26UuejwRboCrBpNlidfu-0gV5943nB1.html
I purchased it on Saturday and the denim is not the thick denim, it is a little thicker than cotton but not true denim. So it must be faulty, thank you for your help
Lesa- Then I would definitely reach out to AccuQuilt about that. It is possible that the blades aren't as sharp as they should be. Let me know what they say.
We were doing a flannel rag quilt and it was almost like the blades were dull, we didn't even get 25 squares before we had to stop to clean. And a lightweight denim we had to stop every 2 squares to get it to cut. And there is no way we can cut more than one layer at a time. Are doing something wrong?
Lesa- I’m not sure how to answer your question. How old is your die? Also, if the blades seemed dull, you would need to reach out to AccuQuilt for that. I think it is recommended that you cut 2 layers of flannel at a time. I can usually cut 4, but it isn’t recommended by AccuQuilt. Denim is really thick, so it makes sense that it you would cut only 2 at a time. I don’t think you are doing anything wrong, I just think the fabrics are a bit thick. Like I said above, if your blades are dull, contact AccuQuilt depending on the age of your die. They stand behind their products. 😊
I got mine 3 days ago and after quite a few cuts it didn't cut the top layers of cotton all the way through on one side...but that was after I cut all the flannel. Now I'll clean it and see if it'll work better
Thank you this was very helpful!
Thank you . Now I understand how to clean the dud.

That is a great idea! Thank you for sharing. 😊 I may give that a try.
Great video
Interesting thank you.

How long does the die and mat last?
I’ve had mine for a about 3 years and it still works great! It just depends on how much you use them and care for them. 😊
Good job!! I am curious to know what dies you used plus the rag quilt? I am a newbie!
