Robert Zubrin - Mars and Future Wars
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- A conversation with Dr. Robert Zubrin - an engineer, inventor, and advocate of Mars colonization. We discuss the current phase of space exploration, potential scenarios for Mars exploration and colonization, the role of artificial intelligence in the new space race, and Zubrin's influence on Elon Musk. SpaceX draws inspiration from Zubrin’s vision, as both share a commitment to making humanity a multi-planetary species. While their efforts are independent, they both see Mars as a key to ensuring the survival and advancement of humanity.

Dr. Zubrin is a wise man. Listen to him.
Dr Zubrin predicted this war around a decade ago and the space assets that would be involved. Take his words seriously
Dr. Zubrin is a man of wisdom.
Mr. Zubrin was impressively patient with Marek playing devil's advocate. Trying to explain that wars aren’t inevitable to a war analyst is like teaching someone math by saying there are infinite numbers in just an inch!😊
Amazing interview!🎖🎖👌👌
Dr. Zubrin amazing person my favourite scientist, strongly recommend his videos about space and Mars. Wish him all the best 👍
Thank you Dr. for speaking out.
Dr Zubrin spent his career learning what we will need to colonise mars while the government abandoned that dream. Now that different politicos have decided that abandoning space was a mistake, he is too old to participate other than making commentary. What a waste. He could have gone for an MBA and made a billion on wall street instead. I wonder if he would recommend the Phd, or the MBA to kids starting college. I personally regret the years I wasted earning my Phd. Totally not worth it.
Individually you have right, I have no doubt. Zubrin is Don Quichotte of its kind. In bigger picture, exactly same thing may be the reason the whole West's three year support brought Ukraine the stalemate at the best. All the might of Wall Street with so many clever people with their advanced finances and derivatives... Shouldn't it be easy to defeat the country with GDP lesser than Italian one? Do you remeber?
very confusing arguments.
stay at mars Robert
Interesting perspective from Dr. Zubrin. Much of what he says makes sense logically, but he has the habit of putting words in people's mouths without references. He is right on everything outside of politics, however.
I'm a Zubrin fan. 99.9% of what he says totally aligns with my views. The only area where we diverge is the reason for war. Zubrin says wars are waged over resources. If you look at the data, this doesn't seem to make sense. Taking the U.S. as an example, nearly every generation went to war: French/Indian War, Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish/American War, WWI, WWII. European history is similar. In fact, when we see war skip a generation, it's usually when resources are scarce, famine, plague, etc. Now look at Russia's invasion of Ukraine: What resources does Russia want to take? My theory: Humans are apex predators. If you look at other species of apex predators, the males fight and kill each other. The surviving males reproduce. Watch The Lion King. This is how Darwinism works with apex predators. Its a basic instinct, especially in young males. But unlike other species, Humans are intensely social. We tend to operate within large groups. Combine these 2 instincts, and you end up with war.
2nd WW was essentially fighting over resources. Germany pushed for oil and Japan tried to break embargo on resources.
However the war for resources is not always with the goal to acquire resources.
Sometimes it's just for denying resources for your competition. This is one of the reasons for the current special operation. Even putting aside rumors about finding new natural gas fields in Donbass, all the territory Russia tries to occupy was a resource base for Ukraine.
No to jest gość 👍
No Marek teraz to dałeś czadu! Nie dość że Gość zacny, to i poprowadziłeś rozmowę po angielsku!🎖Wspaniały wywiad!
ps. "technology" (/tekˈnɑː.lə.dʒi/) wymawiamy z "k", w odróżnieniu od polskiego "ch"😊
Arthur C Clarke said that the only war we fight in Space will be the war of fighting the harsh elements of Space itself
In Clarke's second book/movie the US and the then USSR were competing in space but ended up cooperating for a rescue mission. (2010, the Year We Make Contact).
Wherever we go, we take e v i l with us.
He is the best !
While no one would emigrate to tyrannies. Tyrannies may forcibly export people to the colonies with carrots and sticks. I am thinking of examples: Australia and the Americas.
Every Australian thanks God his ancestors came here centuries ago.
@@trojanthedogI'm betting covid made em regret giving up their guns. They're on the socialist slide now....
Yes, he's wrong here, too. Tyrannies seldom start as tyrannies: take a look at North Korea (or Venezuela). It is usually a tyrant that takes over a healthy society.
Even on his precious Mars Society Convention, there were people postulating that the Mars colony political system should be (for all intents and purposes) communism in everything but the name.
@@trojanthedog Everyone on the globe likes Aussies and many on the globe are jealous of them also, but it is not the point. Point is Mars can start as penal colony too.
I find it concerning to propose that simply eliminating resource scarcity would be sufficient to ensure peace. This issue has been a fundamental part of human existence for as long as we can remember. Throughout our evolution, we have developed instincts that lead us to take this for granted, driving us to make choices and behave in ways that reflect the belief that, even if we are secure now, we may soon find ourselves in need. Furthermore, even if our competitors currently lack the strength to dominate us, circumstances can change rapidly, which compels us to act preemptively, possibly even involving kinetic conflicts.
As for the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence, I am saddened by the apparent lack of imagination displayed by many respected intellectuals. A successful AI revolution will likely lead to the diminishing role of human contributions in the production of goods and services. This shift may even raise ethical questions about the value of human involvement, particularly considering the potential for mistakes that could arise in comparison to machines. If we are to envision a future where humans inhabit other planets-assuming the success of this revolution-it’s possible that we may find ourselves in circumstances akin to animals in a reserve, albeit one hopes for more compassionate treatment.
Okay well the Julian Simon view of how resources work is correct *whether or not* it leads to less war, so it should still be proselytised. Probably a difficult thing to do in a society where most people don't even know the subjective theory of value though.
Well, yes, he's a bit naive in this respect. Right now there's enough food to feed everyone on the planet, yet the hunger hasn't vanished, just because there are still people that are denying food to others.
Similarly, the Nazi's Reich has collapsed because they lacked resources: steel and oil. They reached out to grab them by force, but it was denied by allies.
Similarly again, the current "special operation" (besides being someone's wet dream about restoring the Russian Empire) is all about denying resources from your neighbor, so they can't outgrow you. It's not that Russia doesn't have enough coal mines, the Russian goal is for the Ukraine to not have it.
Societies have things they are allowed to reaserch and subjected they arnt. Therefore it is incorrect that more people means more innovation and invention. In addition the way to you invent the tools you investigate the world with determines what they'll miss. For example, math, its rules and conventions have multiple versions and so the version we have all agreed upon is limited.
Luck runs out = Nuke exchange!
Ведущему надо почаще слушать мудрых людей вроде Зубрина,а не всяких шарлатанов геополитологов
The problem seems to be limited resources and potentially unlimited population. I go with the Kardechev scale. Once we become a class 1 or class 2 civilization these problems will solve themselves. Isaac Arthur has the right idea with his post scarcity society. As we evolve as a civilization problems should solve themselves.
If the Universe is infinite, there’s plenty of room and resources! We already have 2-3 Earths per person-who’s gonna fill them up?
Every life is priceless, especially if the Universe ends up 10^5436 times bigger than we think. Talk about overbooking!😉
Platforms like Noah’s ark are also coming barron.
I agree with Dr Zubrin's comments, enthusiastically....except for one. Space would be the secret for world peace if everyone, and every nation, had equal access to space resources (the solar system has it all: fuel (water), living space (Moon, Mars Lagrange points, Europa (unless there's life). For the rest of the planet, (who aren't space-faring nations and company), it will be scarcity as usual.
Star Trek's Gene Rodenberry based his Utopian Federation on post-capitalist notions of abundance for all, with infinite resources available for all. He referred to the egalitarian and refined morality present in the UFP as the 'New Human' movement. Nobody hoards because everyone can have what they want, and nothing is withheld. Nations and companies on Earth will continue to artificially ensure scarcity because scarcity is an essential cog in Capitalism's wheels.
We should be wary of Elon Musk's Mars City. That's NOT to say SpaceX should be restrained in any way. However, a large off-earth human settlement will always screw towards authoritarianism simply because off-Earth settlements will exist in finite environments that are glaringly supplied from Earth. Everything will be commodified, and necessarily 'rationed' until such time that infinite non-Terrestrial become available. But, without the 'profit motive', businesses and governments will try to enforce scarcity to maintain the capitalist economic system. Musk's alignment with Donald Trump should raise red flags in the Mars community. Efficiency is not intrinsic to humanity's behaviour. Aquisitivness and individualistic chaos is usually the way h. sapiens sapiens 'organises' itself. Personally, I hope Dr Zubrin is 100% right. I fear he is naive concerning humanity's rapacious consumption and it's propensity for hoarding at all societal levels.
Well thought out commentary.
Poland and Virgin Orbit promised missions to Mars and Phobos years ago... any day now, right?🤔
There's only space raw materials, it takes human ingenuity and effort to convert those into something useful for people, in fact scarcity will be higher for a significant period in space because the capital and people to make the millions of products we have on earth will not be present in space
Poland needs Big $$$$$ to do that, so forget it!
How new zealand did it ?
@@rafysancheztilogica8587 NZ has lots of sheeps 😁
I bet Poland could have a Rocketlab-class rocket for Sasin or two ($18-35M).
Here's the problem with Dr. Zubrin's dream. If "the powers that be" are foolish enough to send a manned mission to Mars, it will end up being a suicide mission. The risks are enormous and it's just a matter of time till something goes wrong. Unfortunately, it will be something that will cause the fatality of one or more of the crew. Fact of the matter is, humans were made to live on Earth and NOT on another planet. It sounds wonderful but not realistic in any sense whatsoever.
Apart from the political attitudes of Mr. Zubrin (trying to sell space exploration to Poland, he resembles Robert Fulton somehow 😀), I agree with the rest. With the right justification and management, the Mars trip would boost the science, industry and especially the military might of a country which dare to do so. Second, it would be the most watched reality show ever. Money is comparable to hosting one or two Olympic games, which are already a commercial circus (IMHO). So why not.
After all the Mars development y space X and Elon Musk ,I would have thought Dr Zubrin would have been excited to take about that ,instead he has indulged this war taking fool.I expect that’s why you never go the call from Elon Musk
