    I feel that Byzantine history, like War of the Roses or the Thirty Years War are for people with a better memory for names than what I posses. Still interesting.

      I’ve read Dan Jones’s book on the Wars of the Roses and watched a few dummies guides and I still barely understand the various Plantagenet family issues. I’ve got a quarter the way through Peter Wilson’s book on 30 years war and couldn’t see how it all fits together. I’ve listened to most of the 200 part history of Byzantium podcasts and it all blurs into one. But they appeal to me as an empire that we have forgotten about that was so central.

    I had a delightful visit to Entoyment gaming centre in Poole. One Byzantine Army purchased. I did not bother with the Koursors (lancers), or the horse archers, but I did get one box each of:
    Cataphracts, auxiliaries (Archers), Spearmen, Turcopoles, and the resin Emperor command figure. I also got the resin infantry command resin blister but I don’t really need them in Saga. I don’t recall seeing the Varangian guard but I plan a relatively vanilla army (Saga:Age of Crusades).
    6 points
    1 Warlord (0 points)
    3 points Hearthguard (Cataphracti) (2 units of 6)
    3 points of Levy (36 models broken down into four units of 9. Two units armed with bows and two with spears. 49 figures, nice models, and an interesting battleboard. I would love to field the Turcopoles, and the Gripping Beast Nafatan but that would take me to eight points.
    Nice comment about which shields to use for the spearmen. Looking at the photo on the auxiliary box, the archers are modelled with (thankfully separate) buckler shields strapped to their left arm. Was that practical?

      I did not know Poole had such a specialist miniatures store. Just a day out from Bournemouth for me. Yeah. All about the Klibanaphoroi. Hope you get them painted and find a way of letting us see what you did. Post here if you’re allowed to include links.I wasn’t sure about Saga. It’s an interesting game. But it is basically an unrealistic board game in miniature.

      @@stompie51 they paint rather nice. The faces are janky and you need to paint before glueing on the shields but the detail on the armor is deep and paint and shades settle well

      It’s kind of like being told actually dinosaurs never died out. Just the non avian dinosaurs and birds are fully signed up dinosaurs. Then being told Rome never fell in 400AD or whatever but only half and the eastern bit continued till kind of Columbus landed in the Americas. They’re great models BTW. Still to see a game though as the person who was going to play Saga historicals with me moved!

    They have a great design these spearmen from Fireforge . A nice project . I have a question , as they need to be assemblated , is possible to build them in a fighting position ? I would be interesting creating some dioramas with some wargame brands but Im am always afraid that the figures are only in standing position before battle .

    • @stompie51
      @stompie51  2 роки тому +1

      I think 28mm would bring even more character to your projects. But I don’t think these are right for you. The spear arms are all in a capital “L” shape for standing in formation. I don’t think they will work if you point the spear straight. But they do also come with swords. I think what would be better for you are the Victrix ancient and dark ages plastics as they are properly screaming and bashing each other :)

      I'm using these as the basis of some Gondorian soldiers for skirmish games. As Stompie51 said this kit isn't the most dynamic. You might want to look at Fireforge's Rus and Byzantine Auxiliaries. They are not 100% different in style and are more dynamic. You could use the helmets and shields from the Spearmen.
