Most Powerful Downswing Move You Are Probably Not Doing - Unlocks Easy Rotation

  • I recently had the opportunity to help John with his golf game, specifically his irons. We made some simple adjustments to the start of his downswing and unlocked some key movements that he had been working on for a while.
    John was not striking his irons as well as he would have liked and expressed that he always felt like he was tipping back through the shot rather than rotating, at the end of the lesson he was striking it more solid, hitting it farther and rotating through the golf ball with ease, and to achieve all that we made one fairly simple adjustment to the start of his downswing.
    I honestly believe that this will be such a valuable lesson for so many of you watching as this is such a key part of the golf swing and if done correctly it really can unlock so many of the really important movements through impact.
    I've seen so many golfers put all their attention on impact, when in fact the solution to their issues could be found much earlier on the swing, and that was certainly the case for John.
    This move is really one of the most powerful that you can work on in your golf swing.
    Hope you enjoy and any questions at all just let me know

    This was pretty amazing to watch as Chris "de-constructed" what the student was doing, then helped him "re-construct" his swing to something better. And, all done in a straight-forward and easy to understand way

    Brilliant video Chris, this is exactly what I’m doing, trouble is after 4 hours of trackman lessons, neither of the pros have I’ve used have realised this. 🤬🤬

    Chris, I’m always amazed at how straightforward and easy to understand your explanations of the how and why, on ways to improve your swing. I’ve used a few of your tips and added at least 20 yards to each iron. Thank you!

    Excellent lesson … great job student and teacher … how does this change the swing concept from your video wide narrow wide… it seems he has to bypass the narrow stage to cure the shallow issue …. Thanks for sharing 😅

    Excellent lesson. You got the guy hitting the ball well and that's the goal. I don't know what the guy was talking about below at all saying this wasn't a good golf lesson. I also like your manner, how you encourage the guy and are patient and emphasize the things he does well.

    Chris, the explanation of this lesson really put things into perspective for me. I struggle with a steep transition, and often try to "pull the chains down" to shallow out. Your explanation of using the arms to assist the club in rotating out really clicked. Was hitting them solid after watching this. My one caveat is that i was pushing the ball a little to the right. Any tips on using this method but also squaring up a bit? Thanks again for the great content!

      Really glad it helped, a push after making that change is really encouraging, so definitely suggests you are on the right path. The face would need to be a touch closed to get the ball to come back, initially I wouldn’t change anything. If you continue to receive, with that swing and an awareness of target you may well naturally begin to create the ideal face position, it may just take a few sessions. If not then I’d first check grip, then face at the top of the swing to see if you can make any changes there

      Use of a swing plate when practising will stop over the top swings, set the alignment stick at the same angle as the club you are using, and swing under the stick both ways, you can’t go over the top, and ensures you hit down on the ball. Tad disconcerting at first, you feel that at speed you will hit the cane, you don’t and muscle memory is drilled very quickly

    A good thing to tell someone that is steep, is to swing the club flat, and OUT at the ball. They will naturally figure out how to make that happen(sometimes).

    Does this create less lag because we’re unhinging the wrist earlier? By the way love your content Chris.

      It shouldn’t, the move I have his certainly looked like he was throwing the club away, but the reality is he would still retain the angles into delivery

    In my opinion this is anything but a good golf lesson, because it doesn't adress the main issues of the swing in question and offers the wrong solution to the wrong problems. A poor setup and a noticeable inside takeway are the root causes of his "over the top" move in the downswing. As long as a golfer doesn't learn how to load his right side of the body and right arm properly in the backswing first, he just keeps adding manipulation and compensations to his (down)swing.

    • @ChrisRyanGolf
      @ChrisRyanGolf  2 місяці тому +2

      Why does an inside takeaway lead to an over the top swing? He came to me struggling with strike, he left with a better club delivery, better strike and more distance, personally I’d class that as a decent golf lesson

      I appreciate your response and let me say that I didn't mean to be impolite. Anyway, it's just how physics works: even though his position at the top of the backswing looks good, the real problem is how the clubhead gets there, which your brain and body is always trying to unconsciously manage in space. Firstly, if the club gets too level or horizontal it has to steepen just to hit the ball, hence the over the top and angle changes in the downswing; secondly, the excessive wrist action in the takeway is moving the clubhead way too far behind the body without proper connection and rotation throughout the swing, and it's bad for timing. As a passionate golfer who is alwasy trying to improve, I know this for a fact because I used to do the same move and it took me servel months to change.

      @@edoardobonelli7338 there is some truth to that, however it’s not 100% accurate. An inside takeaway may lead to an over the top steepening move but only if after that takeaway the COM is moving excessively towards the hand path, that was not the case with John, so the physics of his swing were not causing the over the top. I’d also argue that he isn’t really inside, I would not change his takeaway at all. We changed his transition, delivery, strike and ball flight without adjusting the takeaway, so that surely shows us that wasn’t the issue.
      My belief is that had I started with the takeaway move that would occupy the majority of hit focus and make it difficult to actually focus on the stuff that would make him better, my goal in any lesson is to change as little as I can to get the best results
      Golf swing is subjective though so happy for you to have a different opinion to me on this

    • @brandonbrown5154
      @brandonbrown5154 2 місяці тому

      It’s not that simple, or deep(depending how you look at it). Inside takeaway can still play great golf, even tour golf has seen pros with inside takeaways.
      All he’s getting John to do is shallow the club, which is one of the biggest keys, to playing good golf for a steep swinger or slicer.

      @@brandonbrown5154 Nancy Lopez or John Daly (just to name a few) can play incredibly well because they have been playing golf and hitting balls their entire lives developing insane skills and body mechanics. But unfortunately that doesn't work very well with the majority of average golfers. The inside takeway is one of the biggest swing killers. It's a dynamic move, so as long as a mass (the clubhead) is being pulled behind without proper hands-arms-body movement, you will always need to push it forward the incorrect way in order to hit the ball. And this leads to all sort of various compensations, becasue the body and the right arm are not loaded properly and you simply just can't rotate through the ball. You can clearly see in his rehersals even at the end of video how his backswing starts and what his body is forced to do becasue of that. That shallowing is move is just further manipulation for decent contact which you might no be able to do quite often swinging that way and it doesn't solve much
