    It's so weird to see how these doctors approach the problem. She hasn't eaten anything but fries for 26 years, so let's try raw mushrooms and asparagus- foods that 90% of people don't like, and then watch her gag with a judgy face. Empty toast, empty pasta, mashed potatoes, baked potatoes maybe as a first not too scary step...

    • @NLR759

      I know, either those doctors are idiots or they just wanted to create drama for the show. So many people hate mushrooms and asparagus! I would have started her on plain oven baked fries (no oil), and maybe other foods that can be baked to be crispy, or are naturally crispy. The cucumber was a good idea.

    I’m sorry.. I am not diminishing the fact that this is a very realistic disorder.. HOWEVER, I call BS on anyone thinking that this will be ‘fixed’ in ONE WEEK. 26 years of a repetitive diet - that doesn’t go away in days.

      Her doctors probably have already advised her parents to let her get hungry enough to eat what's put in front of her without realising how severe her food phobia is, very few young kids will starve themselves but Amber was a rare exception. I've seen another documentary about a girl who had never eaten anything in her life as she was raised on a feeding tube. When she starved herself for five days & lost 10 per cent of her body weight, there was nothing to be done but put her back on the tube.

    • @sianowen1536
      @sianowen1536 3 роки тому +67

      @lavender I'm still fussier but also more adventurous than most, but Amber's reaction to all foods except certain kinds of French fries is how we'd feel if we were asked to taste live insects (dead ones I'd probably give a go in a restaurant where they'd have been safely farmed & prepared) or even foods we usually like if they were presented to look more like cat puke.

    I had a food avoidance disorder over 40 years ago when it was pretty much unheard of. Most foods were virtually inedible to me. It was as if someone had offered me a plate of assorted insects to dine on. I was literally terrified of most foods and would sit in front of my plate for hours, refusing to eat. I didn’t care that I would starve, I could not force myself to eat it. If someone did force feed me, I would promptly throw up. It’s a real condition- a food phobia. Rare, but definitely real.

    My brother went through a picky stage when he was like 5. My mom kept giving in letting him only eat cereal. My dad eventually had enough and made him eat beans. He sat at the table crying for so long with like 3 beans on his tongue. Finally he swallowed it. As an adult beans are now some of his favorite foods and he eats fine. Haha

But my elder sister was so kind and every time when I came from school and told them I don't eat this or that, She would feed me with her hands and would say if it didn't taste good spit it in my hands. I would be so hungry and whenever I tried I would love the food and wondered why I hated it in the first place. Then I would tell her because you're feeding me that's why I like it. :D

    However, the mother should have taken her to a better psychologist. There’s no way no doctor or psych would “not understand”. My ex’s mom took him to a psychiatric learning center when he was younger and he was able to eat other foods while there. While he’s still a picky eater, he’s able to eat enough variety of food to get the nutrients he needs. Her mom should have done that for the well-being of her daughter, kind of ridiculous she did nothing to help her.

      Emetophobia is one of the strings of ARFID. ARFID is categorised as a fear of foods stemming from a past experience or Fear of vomiting. Interoception issues whereby you don’t feel the cues for hunger and so don’t eat. This also means that volume is an issue, imagine trying to push food you don’t like into yourself when you feel full already, you think you’ll vomit. The the last strand is the sensory issues. People can have a mix of these types and they all feed each other to an extent. My daughter has all three but her root cause is sensory and interoception based, she also fears vomiting because of the gagging and the fullness she feels, plus the sensation of vomiting is heightened for her so she has a fear. It’s very likely you also have ARFID but a lesser extreme. Well done for the advances you’ve made

      ARFID didn't make it into the DSM-V until 2013. You're right that "no one had heard of it until then" in the sense that people suffering from it had no name to put to their issues. As evidenced by this very video -- this woman very clearly suffers from it but never received a diagnosis.
      Other reasons you may not of heard if it before include the fact that it's pretty uncommon, and often gets conflated with picky eating because that's the closest thing most people do know. Additionally, those suffering from it tend to isolate themselves out of shame, particularly before it was recognized as a medical diagnosis. Again, as evidenced by this video.

      @Macy didn’t see her father in the video but I would think the same thing applies to him as well. Like i said above it could be a sensory issue but I’ve only seen that in children. Plus if a kid wants McDonald’s(just an example) all the time and you can’t cave in every time they throw a tantrum thats enabling the issue. If the mom and dad left the option open for ONLY French fries to be a choice then that’s on them. Not only that they aren’t caring about the nutritional value in what’s she’s eating. How is she getting fiber and vitamins, nutrients?

    She has selective eating disorder, otherwise known as ARFID. The cause is thought to be from a childhood experience that made them connect food to discomfort or to be genetic. This disorder can be treated by therapy which has been proven to most often help people with this disorder become willing to try new foods.

      Honestly, I also wonder if she should see a re-feeding specialist of sorts because her body may actually need re-training on the actual foods. They may be weird to her body as her body isn't use to having them. Also, these "therapists" simply cannot, and SHOULD NOT, expect her to suddenly be so much better in a day or two. She's got 20+ years of habits to break, which is not going to happen in that short amount of time.

      I think it's unfair to assume the parents didn't try to get her to change. Her genetics test showed her dna is extremely rare. Most kids will eat when they're hungry enough but not all kids. There are some who truly will not eat. I think this mom had to make a choice between letting her kid starve herself to death and giving her the only food she'd eat. I'm sure this mom has been judged so much by other people already...
