Attract Mode: enjoy menus EmulationStation: enjoy games Attract Mode: you need a lot space on hdd EmulationStation: you dont need that much space as dont load videos and videos Attract Mode: flashy EmulationStation: minimalism
Nice vid Drew. Agree with your comments- have Hyperpie on boot for my cabinet and Emulationstation on boot in the family room. Props to all the artists, developers & reviewers like you, MLP, ETA Prime who contribute to this amazing community! My childhood dreams are a freakin reality!
Tbh I find the classic ES UI really, REALLY good. It's minimalistic, it fits what in my opinion should be the looks of a retro, multi-system console, and for me, when you use it with the pixel theme, it just works.
I agree that attract is best for cabs and bartops. Emulation station is super pimp now with all the beautiful themes by these great artists. Makes it hard to pick just one theme and leave it alone! Cool video by the way
so i bought my kiddo this about a year ago and am just finding out about these upgrades. I think it will help them so much when it comes to finding the games they want, since they dont know how to read yet. Which one do you think would be easiest to navigate for a toddler? One of these two or Adam image? i can only find recent vids of adam image so i am assuming that one is more up to date.
Thanks as always Drew. Very informative and easy to follow. I think that hand drawn ES theme is the way to go. It may just be me, but I hate that wheel look of attractive mode.
Emulationstation! one cool thing that i like ES is that the coders are updating it a lot and always implementing different features. I don't know if attract mode is receiving updates, but i hope that they make it perform well on PI. The videos on the system select screen is awesome!
What are the features that make it stand out from Attract Mode? To me that Reys 128GB image at the start looked amazing and I didn't see it lag. Maybe it does, I just didn't notice it.
I love Attract Mode. I'm using it in 4:3 config in my Star Wars themed cabinet and finishing up my vertical screened cabinet which will use Raspberry Pi 3 (my Star Wars cab uses a PC). Does Attract Mode feature a vertical theme? Emulation Station is appealing! I have no intention of incorporating console games in my build, strictly old school arcade vertical configs.
I love Attrace Mode, but I don't use a Pi anylonger, I'm installing reptropie on Lubuntu with attrace Mode, and now I"m importing all the scripts an nice stuff of an HyperPie image to my installation, then I''ll finish to bootup directly into AM. This is for a full blown Arcade build ;-) I wouldn't use AM on a pi at all, its meant for greater hardware and video support with all the animation going on.
Lags come from large sized assets from your folders. Example: marquees with a Resolution over 4k pixels wide (only needet if you build a real cabinet and print some) and HD shortplay snaps videos and so on. I reduced my Marquee Assets to 20-30KB png's (no joke) because its just a scaled down preview artwork inside the menus.... Also lags can be in ANY frontend because of low system performance ( using large assets on a PI and then switching through games) . People dont think nowadays^^
Emulation station 100% because of all the choice of themes and the navigation to access systems and roms is a lot easier and quicker to. Definitely emaulation station.
Attract mode boots a lot faster and gets back from game to menu super fast. ES has this little information box for every game that shows some text of each game. I missed that in AM but overall I would always choose Attract Mode.
I built an arcade cabinet a few years ago, with Windows XP and the GamEx front end. I'm now thinking about converting the cab to a Pi3 . What I like about GamEx is its attract mode, if you let it idle it randomly loads roms into MAME , which will change after a minute to another . I love watching it in the background of my pool room when its not getting played. Is there any of the Pi front ends that will do this ?
Are there any vertical themes for any of these menu systems? I made a small bartop machine out of an old iCade, with a vertical 12" screen on it. Stock ES looks crappy in vertical mode...
Great video dood can u please tell me how big the download files are for these modes? As want to install it to my stock rasberry pi 3 b I'll probably need to use a larger SD card but that's cool thanks.
It's like Apple iPhone (would be Attract mode) vs Samsung Galaxy (would be Emulation Station). Similiar, but different, but doing same job. There is no winner in general, just preferences. I use Emulation Station and I am done with 1 month of setting up everything. My chosen theme is Cygnus and its great. But looking at those videos, Attract mode looks beautiful too. So I would end up voting for Emulation Station, but only because I am using it, which is coming as a default on my Retropie and have no experience with Attract mode. I think, that would be the reason why Emulation Station will win in future.
^Quick question : I do have that Rey's image, Is there a way to get all the games from attract mode into the Emulationstation (PSP,Hacked Games, ect ... ) ?
Emulation Station ... while I can appreciate the flashiness of Attract Mode, it doesn't make up for how gosh darn slow it is. Also, I hate the controls.
Hi Drew, great video as usual man. Question.. which version of attract mode (with the pacman neons at the start of the vid) is that? New or old version? Last Pi i built was back in May. Seems like things are moving along quickly! 😉
Francisco Oteiza attract mode sucks and runs like ass, plus attract mode is just an emulation station mode In which is not polished code wise and runs like ass.
Attract Mode: enjoy menus

This is one of those videos that took a little longer to make, so share it on the forums, friends, and family! Hope you enjoy.

Good work again, Drew!
Good boy.

Straight to the point and informative. Thanks a bunch man, helped a new comer for sure.
super work dude

I am very happy with the current ES. Attract Mode is still very cool and beautiful, but I no longer have any desire to use it.
Great video I just bought a bartop with ES can’t wait to get it.. love your videos
Nice!
comic book theme is brilliant. it kind of gives you the whole 70s 80s era experience
EmulationStation all the way!!!
No
Damn. I need that comic theme. That's slick.
Emulation station 100% because of all the choice of themes and the navigation to access systems and roms is a lot easier and quicker to. Definitely emaulation station.

jackomo Joi this can be hidden or replaced with a loading picture

Very cool and useful video, thank you! Quick question, how do you record your screen on retropie?
video preview snaps is all i want
Hello no link for the medias ??? Where to find the themes the wheels the marquees ???? Greetings :)
ES still uses those xml gamelist files? last time i used that it takes forever to load my mame list, which was about 32,000 long

Why when I switch to attract mode my buttons get messed up, how can I fix it ?
How can play a hyperspin portable at home on the TV I really want one
how to enable all console in emulation station ? its only showing nes games . my games are in zip format
Emulationstation with Showbox and Sterling theme best of both world
ES for speed and ease of use! Attract mode is pretty but feels too klunky
Great video thank you
thanks joe
^Quick question : I do have that Rey's image, Is there a way to get all the games from attract mode into the Emulationstation (PSP,Hacked Games, ect ... ) ?
They are already there... You don't need to do anything except reboot in emulationstation
I don't see any PSP Menu in EmulationStation, I'll look closer tonight at home . BTW Awesome channel man !
ahhh yeah you have to manually add that one, I dont have a video on it but I beleive there is others on youtube
ps thanks for the compliments!
I'll take a look. Feel free to make one because you are the reference for Retropie "How to video""
Emulation Station !
Easily the best
Why?
hey uhhh do you know how to setup emulation station?
Where do i find that nice reys 128 attract image or that last comic book 128gb image for emu
theG33KbRU check out arcade punks - all the links are there
Attract mode looks very nice but the slight lag is a downfall, I much prefer something that doesn't look as good but runs smooth without any jitters
Yes exactly
Great video, but I'm kinda torn between the 2...I like the speed of ES but I like the visual appeal of AM too...sigh....
Emulation Station ... while I can appreciate the flashiness of Attract Mode, it doesn't make up for how gosh darn slow it is. Also, I hate the controls.
DrewTalks,
In HyperPie, Can I add Other programs Besides Kodi? I'm looking at a Streaming APK to put their and did not know if it was possible.
Whats carton theam calld
If emulation station had that attract mode wheel then hands down it would be top for me.
recalbox does...
@@drewtalks ive never play with recall box
how do you get all the images, meta data and video snaps?
For which one?
I just overclock my pi3 and now attract mode works better.

Hyperspin sucks as bad as emulation stations attract mode which is an add on via updating your main cores.
It is sad i can't use retrorama phil has taken it down
What do beziles do n haw chang
Attract mode os too busy, emulation station ftw
