    This Is America: Childish Gambino's Genius Absurdity
    • This Is America: Child...
    Donald Glover is one of the most influential artists of our generation. His work has extended from DerrickComedy at the very very beginning of UA-cam, to writing on 30 Rock, acting on Community by Dan Harmon (creator of Rick and Morty), to making some of the most brilliant lyrical rap and later producing and singing Grammy Award Winning R&B and Soul inspired music. His versatility as an artist and his refusal to be labeled or put into any sort of societal box sets him as a defining figure of the mentality of the current generation and how our access to information and communication on a variety of subjects is changing us faster than we could have ever imagined.

      nivikyesac I think he's also a successful writer from book to lyrics and also scripts.

    Without ever watching this video, i have to point out that guys like Jamie Foxx pretty much made Donald Glover possible. And he struggled in the pre social media age. But as soon as technology caught up with him, he became an in demand, all around entertainer.

    • @MediumDSpeaks
      @MediumDSpeaks  6 років тому +9

      popeye697 This is a really good point, and I do mention here that the internet is the reason for Glover's success. It's the final line in the essay and it quotes him saying that exact thing in an interview with charlemagne and the breakfast club

      I gues you're right, but I think Jamie Foxx would be a better comparison to Donald Glover, since JFxx is a more versatile actor, singer, rapper and comedian, just as Donald is today.

      I dont like how your leaving out the fact that donald glover does very much talk about race and is clearly very congnicent of race problems ...when eh called himself a white rapper it was a joke because some people considered his rap corny and like he wasnt black but if you watch Atalanta race is real important to donal glover ...also he just wants to express himself its that easy ...if more black people were famous youd see alot more childish gambinos...

    • @MediumDSpeaks
      @MediumDSpeaks  6 років тому

      phar0ahad3 a lot of black people are famous. Yes race matters in terms of Atlanta and possibly This is America to Gambino but in interviews including the Sway in the morning one following the release of Because the Internet he says he doesn't want to be defined by race and that society is more the reason he is cognizant of his race but that he is an equalist and sees himself as just a human, his identity doesn't come from his blackness

      Donald Glover is a virtuoso, any specific generation is not. You can not appropriate the genius and accomplishments of one man as a whole generations accomplishments and shared experience. Access to social media and online resources, like UA-cam, doesn't make a generation any more apt to deal with life than the previous generations. This video comes off as highly self righteous in your own opinion that a generation is enlightened and able to prosper more, "because the internet". As you get older you will learn to see the truth of true empathy and humility. It will show you a better path to enlightenment.
      Wisdom understands it's own ignorance and thereby is wise.

    In esoteric terminology I've learned that he actually has a connection to the number 20. And 20 is connected to a spirit named Harpokrates who is known as the spirit who Defies All Odds and Removes All Obstacles. Harpokrates is the crowned and conquering man-child king. And that's exactly who this Childish Gambino guy is.. this is what he's shown us.

    I'm unable to put into words the feelings and emotions I have toward this video. But I can say, they are all positive! This video sums up everything I've been feeling for the past decade about the current situation our we've found ourselves in. You explained it so perfectly, our parents had no idea what they were instilling in us when they said we could be anything we want to be. That shit stuck like the bond between atoms! It's a curse, in that we're forever plagued with the anxiety and stress of wanting to figure out what to do with our lives, but even more so a gift, that we're graced with the opportunity to do it all and not be labeled. Glover is the perfect example of that. Thank you for making this piece!

    the second I heard from make stuff that there will be more where that came from, I instantly came here and I am happy to say that I am not disappointed at all. I never considered this point of view before in any kind of art. people always say see the emotional part of the art and so on but I never really understood what they meant by "the emotion" an art can draw from. I finally understand why.

    Great video, I love the points about versatility and modernity being reflected by an artist's entire body of work, its the kind of thing that brings an artists, and their work, to the next level. I would say however that the UA-cam trend of doing these analyses alongside so much praise makes the video longer, and in the end, less interesting to the viewer. I would say allow me the viewer to have my opinion of Glover improved by your thorough analysis of his work, and you can spend more time on giving more information, important points, etc. I can be reminded of how much I love redbone when you mention it and play it in the background, but if you keep calling it genius it reads more like an advertisement or using opinion and flattery to prove your point. I really like this video and the points it makes, I look forward to seeing more. Subbed.

    I believe you will most definitely accomplish your goal of being a full fledged youtuber. As far as I'm concerned the amount of quality in your videos is almost on par with cinema sins/wins. The time and effort you put it reflects well; I'm definitely subbed. If for no other reason than, this and the Lil Dicky video hurt my feelings...well one feeling...actually it's more of a sense really...blah! You hurt my pride. Not only was the video great, it made me feel, and the main points couldn't be clearer. And also being someone who wants to be a full fledged youtuber and comedian the likes of Swoozie and Bill Burr I had to admit to myself, I'm not trying nearly as hard as you, either of them, and no where near as hard as I could be.
    So thanks. And keep up the good work and great videos.
    Sidenote: I wasn't sure which video I wanted to leave this comment on, this one or the Lil Dicky, but this one brought me to your channel which then lead to me watching the rest, so...yup.

    I think this video is brilliant and really captures this man I look up to so much. I think its one problem is acting like old Glover and new Glover are the same entity. That Camp/Community era and everything before was someone who was more or less ok with just being whatever as long as he got to create. It's when he had that epiphany going into Community Season 5 with endings and mortality and all that, that he became what he is now. It's not like he wasn't deep and didn't share a personality with the man we see now. It's just that he's changed. It's like comparing the Chapelle Show Dave Chapelle to the Post-Iceberg Slim Chapelle we have now. But still... amazing video.
    P.S. Also it almost makes it seem like #DonaldForSpiderman was made because of the creation of Miles Morales. Instead vice-versa.

    Ok so I have said this before in these exact words, "Donald Glover is a jack of all trades and a master of... All of them." So either I subconsciously stole that from somewhere and thought I came up with it on my own, or you stole that from me.

    I liked the video. :3 Not alistener of Donald Glover's music, but I loved him in "Community"! Maybe I should give his albums a listen!

    There's a Gambino song called That Power which is so underated cuz it's literally my favourite of his but it looks like it isn't really popular even for fans. So the last line of the last verse actually conclude the message of this whole video which is " I am what i am, everything i wanna be"
