as soon as i saw this in my recommended i had flashbacks to when game grumps played this *"What the heck is up with this game? Are those paintings? Or windows? Jeez game designers, make up your minds."*
I clicked on this video not realizing I had played this game before. U,mmmm I was probably 6 maybe 7 and I’m almost 40 now. After watching I could remember the music. I remember the mops. I remember that window. I also remember getting bored and putting in techmo bowl or Tyson punch out soon after. But dude this brings back memories I would have never been able to recall. Thank you! After watching further I did beat this game I remember all of this. Thanks again I would have never ever remembered this without this video. What a great memory.
Y'know, I could reference the beginning of that legendary Game Grumps episode... But, literally EVERYTHING ARIN SAYS in that episode cracks me up. So I'll quote a couple favorites: *_"The only this game reminds me of is a massive shit I took earlier."_* *_"If useless a#^ Minnie dies, you die. What is this? A marriage?"_* *_"What is this bullshit? You play through the game and get a 'Game Over.' What do I just bring the game back? Come on! Let me try again!"_*
Minnie was meant to be played with a 2nd player. So if you have 2P controlling Minnie, you could theoretically have her run around, invincible, shooting at enemies, while 1P advances through the level. This game was so dope!
Absolutely loved this game. My dad bought it for me when I was 7, and I played it for years. I remember one time the game glitched on the pirate ship level. I jumped overboard but instead of killing me, I was running around on the bottom of the screen under the water. I had to eventually reset the game but it was fun to play around outside of the ship. I was never able to replicate that glitch.
This was my first Capcom game. To me, Magical Quest and Castle of Illusion are all time classics. Maybe it's just me, but I've always felt that Mickey games, while charming, also had an eerie/strange vibe to them.
That's an interesting observation to think about. I wonder if the eerie/strange vibe is partly because the games' soundtracks have this... almost indescribably melancholy sense to them. IMO the songs in those games don't exactly have bright, punchy percussion and super happy melodies. They are pleasant to listen to, but the overall tone of them feels kind of pensive, or mysterious.
Great comment and good theory about the music. I think that's a big part of it, especially in Magical Quest. I think it also has to do with the game settings (creepy castles, dark forests, caves etc.), weird enemies (e.g. Pete's head on almost all the bosses in Magical Quest) and the stories behind the games (e.g. Pluto goes missing in Magical Quest). I just find the overall atmosphere of these games is somewhat "dark"...and this is coming from an oldschool Doom and Quake player. A lot of old Disney movies can be really weird, like Fantasia. I see a Fantasia-esque type quality atmosphere in these Mickey games. On the other hand, Mousecapade was basically Adventure Island "Master Higgins" Mickey, with a somewhat weird Disney vibe (especially "The Woods" level). Thanks for the reply and have a great day.
Even seeing someone else make those jumps in the Ocean level always stresses me out. All I remember about that stage was how if your jump was even slightly off, Minnie falls in the water, and that kills you!
In the Japanese version, there was a lot more of an "Alice in Wonderland" theme, with a little "Peter Pan" thrown in. Both Disney animated features featured the talents of Kathryn Beaumont as Alice and Wendy respectively.
Had fun with this one growing up. My cousin had it and I would always borrow it. I hated when they took Minnie though. The stage skip cheat was neat. I forgot where I learned it though
This game may have been a hit for Capcom in North America, and what prompted them to begin their relationship with Disney, in producing games for them.
There were a few Capcom Disney games from towards the end of the cycle of NES that were farmed out to Make Software. When this game came out in North America in 1988, Hudson's sound engine was significantly revamped by that time.
I liked the Master System, GB and SNES Mickey Mouse games more personally, but this one's still playable. Just somewhat rough around the edges, mainly due to its age, but fairly short, with nothing too difficult. Even the maze in this one isn't hard to figure out on your own. Also, well played - no death and all!
I like to consider that this was Kingdom Hearts Zero. Back when the Mice traveled across the Disneyverse and fought the villains themselves to rescue just of the Heart Princesses
Ahhh so Simple... Until you had to die 1000 times, learn the patterns and the music burned a hole through your skull...... Still great times with friends 😁. Learned to throw a controller with this one.
Oh, this reminds me of "Milon's Secret Castle" (no surprise, since Hudson also did that game)! And the music has a clever motif of the Mickey Mouse Club theme. It's cool that Minnie basically tags along as a permanent, invincible doubling power-up, something I can't say I've seen much in a game before. Is she always controlled with limited A.I., or can you switch between the characters with the press of a button and control her a bit, like seems possible when you went to fight the first boss?
I haven't played this in 30+ years, but I'm sure you can't switch to fully controlling her. I guess the best way describe it is that you "passively" control her movements/shots. The AI tries to mirror Mickey's movements.
I've only ever played Castle of Illusion, Land of Illusion and World of Illusion, plus Fantasia on the Mega Drive and Master System. The Mega Drive version of Castle of Illusion is my favourite Mickey Mouse game.😂🙃
i loved this game as a kid, but i remember the boss were different, in the first stage was the cat, the second a duck i guess, the third one was the caterpillar that smoke, then captain hook and finally the heart queen
yes thats in diffrend part of the world she have changes for things like to not be more like scary or evil for kids to be more good for that she is change little my game was the same like from the video but is still cool hehe
That's because you must have played the Japanese version, which is apparently Alice in Wonderland themed from the start, and Hudson Soft wanted to make this point so apparent, that they straight up named the game "Mickey Mouse: Big Adventure in Wonderland" in Japan. When it came time for Capcom to release it overseas however, they decided to change up the bosses and enemy characters to make the fact that you were saving Alice and that the game was Alice in Wonderland themed a little less obvious.
Here is an interesting fact... The reason why Alice is in the end is because all of the bosses in the JP version were Alice in Wonderland villains. Dont know why the US version edited the bosses like that.

I don't have any game requests for him per se, but I wonder if he could do "Mega Man 2", early CPS1 style? Basically, how it would have sounded like in the style of early CPS1 games, such "Willow" and "U.N. Squadron". Hudson Soft developed the game in Japan, however, they could not release it overseas due to Capcom having the rights to create and publish Disney related games on console outside of Japan, so Capcom published it for them. A similar yet slightly different situation happened with Kemco's Donald Duck game. Kemco wanted to publish it overseas as "Donald Duck", but since Capcom held the license, rather than go through Capcom to release the game in the US, they decided to get the license to Snoopy from United Featured Syndicates, and retooled the game as "Snoopy's Silly Sports Spectacular" rather than "Donald Duck.
