Great tour! My wife says my middle name is "upsell!" I did close to the same thing at Woodcrafters. Had planned for months to buy the contractor saw with cast iron upgrades. They explained with all the upgrades, not much more to buy the pcs. So that's what I did and with the mobile base. I bought the dust collection blade guard, but made my own piping for the dust control. There is an advantage without the motor hanging off the back.
I saved money on the dewalt planer like you have. Wife found one at a garage sale for $125 last summer. Needed a new belt and blades. Works great!

Thanks for the shop tour, I enjoyed it and watched the whole thing. It's always interesting to see how different people lay out their shops, and I usually come away with something I can use for mine. I like your home made router table with all the storage it has, and your miter saw bench with the drawers. I'm lacking storage space also, and really need to build some into my shop. Best dust collection for a compound miter saw is its own little box with a strong vacuum. Mine just erupts dust everywhere. I have to clean up after it every time I use it. Nice jointer btw.

"...this is my lawnmower, it's a Husqvarna, it's awesome, I hate that it's in here, moving on..." - Love this video tour. I have limited space as well. All my tools (just getting started) are at my step son's house (new trim and doors through entire house). This inspires me to expand my tool list for projects my wife wants while trying to work in a confined garage space... I'm finding out you have to plan ahead or be in a constant state of mobility. Thanks for sharing your space!

Nice shop! Great job on explaining the good, bad and ugly with your tools. When I was contemplating the SawStop Contractor Saw at one point, I almost went with it. I had an old Rigid Contractor saw that did the trick but hated the motor in the back. My wife ended up surprising me with the Professional Cabinet Saw instead of the Contractor saw. Its a fantastic saw!

Good video! It's always nice to see how others managed their space. I'm downsizing from a 36x36 shop to 20x21 so lots of doing without and compromises.
When going from 110VAC to 220VAC on the saw I wouldn't expect to see any difference at the saw. You'll consume the same WATTS whether 110 or 220. The amperage draw is cut in half at 220V because the voltage is doubled from 110V. The real difference is how many tools can be run at the same time on a single (pick your amperage) circuit. A saw and 2 hp dust collector can be run at the same time on a single 20A 220VAC circuit where they would trip the breaker if run at the same time on a single 110V 20A circuit. I intend to run as many tools as possible on 220VAC in my new shop because the wire gauge can be smaller and less expensive compared to using 110V.

Regarding insulation, as a general rule, approximately 90% of winter heat loss is through the ceiling. Attic insulation in Kansas City area should make an enormous difference. It will also help keep the garage from getting as hot in summer.
Really like your scrap wood cart, and am planning to build something along those lines.

Good shop tour. I love your honesty when talking about the tools and what you like and what you don't. That is so Jay Bates - since you mentioned him a couple times. He has been looking for shops to share on his channel - did he share yours - I don't recall seeing it. Maybe you can get more views and a double hit of your shop video if you contact Jay and ask him to feature your shop also. One thought, several UA-camr include their camera and audio equipment in their links, as well as their tools. One more way to help people know how to get the equipment you use for your videos (if they want) and possible one more way to monetize. Never have enough small coin coming into to upgrade to even more and better tools. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the tour. You always learn something whenever you get a tour of another guy's shop. That said, maybe you should list your SawStop on Craigslist and go get the cabinet saw. There's a quantum leap in owner satisfaction there. They say a lot of nice things about Harbor Freight these days. Well, Harbor Freight says a lot of nice things about themselves these days. 40 years ago I spent a day's pay on a bunch of on-sale HF 1/2' pipe clamps. They failed in ways I could not have imagined were possible. Within a couple years I sent the remaining three (of a couple dozen) along with a bunch of other disappointing stuff to the weekly auction. All those years gone by and I last fall I bought a big generator from them. The first two wouldn't run long enough to empty the gas tank. The third, a second free replacement, is sitting in its unopened box awaiting a Craigslist thrifty optimist.
Yeah, Harbor Freight is a mixed bag. I generally avoid it these days. Thanks for watching!

Really enjoyed your shop tour. For what it's worth, we have very similar tools, etc. My shop is 30' x 50' which sounds large (and it is pretty nice - much larger than I ever had before and ever expected to have). While it is very workable, I feel a little cramped at times. Just goes to show that no one has a shop that is truly big enough!

I agree with you 100%. I have the same wen tools you do and they have worked great and the price is cheap. I agree also on the clamps stay away from harbor freight. Just subscribed and thumbs up.

I like the HF F style clamps because they are lifetime warranty and so easy to swap out when they break
To each their own. Like I said in the video, the smaller f style clamps are okay but other than that I have not had good luck with HF clamps. Thanks for watching!

An up-sale from Kobalt to SawStop is quite an up-sale. Sort of on the lines of used car to Mercedes! This is how sales reps put kids through college!
The Kobalt to SawStop was all me and happened before I went into Woodcraft. The jobsite to contractor saw was the salesman and I am glad he did. I would have traded in the jobsite after a few months. Thanks for watching.

Enjoyed the video and the comments on your various tools and decisions. I have the Wen drill press. Also, I have the Wen oscillating belt and spindle sander. It's cheaper than Ridgid and had better ratings on the Home Depot website. Works great and I bought extra belts on Amazon.

Good looking shop! Your shop and mine are very similar actually. I am also a big Jay Bates fan. I even went in on the Clear Vue cv1800 after watching his installation video of it. I'll just mention, since it seems like you might consider upgrading your dust collection one day, and you watch the Bates content, the Clear Vue is super loud. It sounds like a tornado siren. I ended up framing a closet around the whole thing with 3" of Rockwool insulation and 5/8" sheet rock. That did the trick. It seems to pull dust really well so far. Also, I have 12 sheets of 3/4" plywood sitting in my garage right now for his Miter Saw station! So get on it man! =)
Bryan, the CV1800 is on my list. Hopefully in the next year.
I hope to start my miter saw station in the next couple of months. It's an expensive project so I have to do some budgeting and I have a few more projects in line ahead of it. I really want to get it done though. Stay tuned!

I'm watching this about 2 1/2 years after you recorded it so you may have already done something about insulating your ceiling but if not, just an idea...you might have an insulation company come over and shoot some insulation into the attic area. You mentioned how it was a mess up there so that would eliminate you having to get up there...just have them shoot the insulation in and call it good. Just an idea. Nice video!

HI Tim, nice shop. I found your channel while searching for shop ideas, the best place to find them is in other guys shops. I'm currently rehabbing my shop to make it better for video work. I started my channel very much as you did, I was looking for a video to solve a problem and ended up making one of my own with very good response, after a couple of those I was hooked.

The woodslicer's from Highland are the best bandsaw blades I've ever use outside of the Laguna carbide tipped blades
Yep, good blades at a good price. I've recently gotten a Laguna 18bx bandsaw and a Resaw King to go along with it. For the money, I'd say Woodslicer was probably the way to go.
Loved the video. I hope to upgrade to that sawstop someday. I did a video about my bench and I don’t think it will fit though. Also got the Wen spindle sander with 4” belt and it’s just......ok.
Yeah, the WEN stuff isn't junk like some people think but it's also not top of the line. It's really good for small shop hobbyists. Every WEN tool I've bought I've ended up wanting something bigger. Thanks for watching!

I was hooked watching your video about your shop. I just ran across your page today & it was exactly what I have been thinking about doing to my garage. We just moved in a different house about 6 months and I've been doing woodworking for about 2 years (when I'm not at my regular job) I have made many big & small items but want to get my shop set up much better & increase my tool supply which hopefully will make more efficient & better making all types of projects. My question is how long did it take you to accumulate your power tools and get your shop to what it looked like in the video? Also, I need lighting bad, so I will watch your video on the your junction box & extra power outlets & maybe lighting. Thank you and I definitely be watch more of your stuff!
Thanks for watching, David! In December of 2016 I had a Craftsman 11 piece cordless kit and a Craftsman 10 inch miter saw. I don't even use those anymore so everything you see in my shop I acquired since December 2016.

If you didn't upgrade your SawStop wings yet maybe the cast iron router table wing from sawstop might be a good choice and will save you some space to.
That would only cover the extension table. I'd still be left with steel wings. Plus, I dont want a router table in my table saw. Thanks for watching!
I’ve been happy with my WEN tools. I’ve reviewed the lunchbox planer and drill press on my channel
Me too, Brad. The bandsaw is on its way out though. A couple of nights ago I had to resaw some 8/4 walnut and it took about 20 minutes for one 72x5 board. It works well for small stuff but that's not really what I do so time for an upgrade!

What do you use to record audio in your shop videos? sounds great, looks like there should be terrible reverb or sound distant but, sounds as if youre wearing a wireless mic or something. thanks. great video. ---- Sloppy Joe, Overland Park, KS
Hey Joe, I use an Azden wireless lav mic. I have had a lot of trouble with audio but I think I dialed it in with these last two videos. The key was turning down the recording level on the camera. Before I was getting a lot of echo and pretty bad audio overall. I reached out to Jay Bates, another UA-camr, and he gave me that tip. Worked like a charm.

All of these tools for only $700, in Costa Rica that's like 370.000 colones , and that's what just a table saw and band saw cost...and i found it on Facebook Marketplace.

Great video. I'm just getting into woodworking myself and am pretty excited except for my space. My current 2 car garage is about 27x25 but plan to make it a bedroom so i will be building a new garage. Thinking of doing 24x36 giving her a parking space which leaves me with 23x23 space for a shop. I was wondering what the overall dimensions are for your shop? I plan on doing some woodworking and metalworking in mine. Also would be interested in seeing more on your subpanel. Will be subscribed. Love your way of doing your video.
Hey Brandon, thanks for watching. My garage is about 475 square feet but it's an odd shape. For you, it really depends on what kind of tools you'll be going with. If you want bigger machines then you'll obviously want more space. Also, doing metal work in a wood shop can have issues so you might want more space for that. If 23x23 is all you got though, it'll work. You just have to be creative.

why is your miter saw to the far right of bench
Wade, I put it there based on wanting 8 feet of capacity to the left of the saw. However, that only really works well when you have a stop block on the other side as well which I don't have yet. I probably would have been better off doing 6' and 2' with this setup. This is only temporary. Well, temporary going on over a year now. I will be building a miter saw station on the opposite wall in the coming months and it will have 8' to the left of the blade and 4' to the right.

It's cheaper but quite a bit heavier so the folding/unfolding and assembly can be a bit more cumbersome. The tongue assembly on the steel version is also different so it's a little taller when folded up.
Harbor Freight also offers a steel version (www.harborfreight.com/1195-lbs-capacity-48-in-x-96-in-heavy-duty-folding-trailer-62648.html) which has a similar design to the aluminium Northern Tool trailer. I've had all three and really like the aluminium.

everyone wants a SawStop I purchase my Sears contractor saw when I was around 24 now 62 it's a wonderful saw it did everything I ask it to do dado set, molding 3 cutter head rip a full plywood sheet and I build some wonderful indoor and outdoor furniture kitchen/bathroom cabinets and it's still running and true my favorite tool in my 2 & 1/2 car garage and I still have all my 10 fingers

I have the same Mitre saw... and all mitre saws dust collection is crap... we have the Mikata at work... dust collection is crap... My last two mitre saws before my current one, dust collection was crap...

@@TheAverageCraftsman I meant, did you run that from your main house panel? to a 50 amp breaker? Since my main panel was already filled, i had to install a subpanel to allow for 220 breakers and connected a 50 amp breaker to power the sub panel.
I have a sub panel in my shop. I connected the mini split to a 30 amp breaker on exterior of the house which then connects to my sub panel.
The "temporary" miter saw station.....where did you get the plywood that you used for that? Very nice
Thanks for watching, Don. Most of the plywood I use for shop projects is Purebond birch plywood that you can get from Home Depot. It's pricier than others but I really like it.

I would not do cabinets you will regret it. Unless your building cabinets specifically for large tool storage. Drawers is the only way to go

@@TheAverageCraftsman hey man that router table came out just as good as the best woodworkers and 1000% better than a store bought one... congrats there .... as for WEN as you said it's just branded generic chinese machines like harbor freight.... I'm not putting down any of it because I a huge supporter of tools for cheap, not just cheap tools.... my shop if populated with all used brand names and harbor freight stuff... the brand names were all bought for at least half the price but more for way less than that.... I know you love your incra 5000 but that new even with the discount is so overpriced it makes my head spin... but I do own an incra 1000 that i picked up for $20...lol and a brand new incra 6" t-ruler for $9.... I make posts like this in hopes that it pushes someone that might think the hobby is out of there reach financially, to rethink it that they dont need the best of the best or new tools to have a shop and build quality "stuff".... keep up the great content

"Overpriced" is relative. I am more than happy to pay what I did for that Miter 5000.
I scope Craigslist and Facebook marketplace daily for tools and there is just not that much available in my area. I've bought used where I could find value but they are just few and far between where I live.
You're absolutely right about the financials of the hobby. I started my channel to try and talk the beginner and I think I do a good job at that but I also know that I have spent more on tools these past two years than most are able so it's a bit of a tightrope I have to walk. Every single project I've made can be made with minimal tools so I hope I haven't scared anyone off. I know a lot of beginners can be put off by UA-camrs with nice tool collections.

I picked up a Jet contractor table, 14" band saw, 6" jointer, outfeed roller table, and a craftsman raidialarm saw for $500 6yrs ago...
then last week I grabbed a Hitachi 12" miter saw, bosch trim router, ridgid 6.5hp vac for $120 (these replaced cheaper versions I already had) ..... and a few weeks ago a like new 734 planer for about half price... so my buying for a while is halted

Mike, I just have the stock dust collection on the SawStop. You can buy a port from SawStop which I did but it's just a place to hook hose in the back. It's not even in use right now. I just have a hose running up to the dust port below the blade.
