- Gary Moore - The Loner (guitar cover by Elmo Karjalainen)
Gary Moore is the reason I started playing guitar properly. I heard his solo on the live version of Shapes of Things, and it totally blew me away. I wanted to be able to play like that. So I started learning.
One of the first songs I ever tried transcribing was The Loner. It's one of my favourite songs ever, and my transcription probably totally butchered it. I can't remember anymore. Later on I learned it properly. I even used to play some kind of cover version of it live.
The Loner is Gary Moore at his best. Melodic, full of emotion, and even a few fast things. I hope I didn't butcher it as badly as I probably did when I first transcribed it. This cover is a tribute to the man who got me playing guitar in the first place. Actually I think it turned out rather well.
I hope you like it.

Out in the fields. ...midnight blues. ..the loner and walking by myself (because I can play that one) . I must try to learn the loner...I started before but forgot to continue on.
Great songs all of them.
Hi Elmo. The loner is def one of my favs, also Empty rooms (specially these 2 songs at Live in Stockholm 1987). Also parisienne walkways, I still got the blues for you, separate ways (amazing solo at live from London 1992) and crying in the shadows.
Not a Moore-buff. But I always enjoyed that metal-song (Over the Hills?). Still got the blues is obviously a great one. I did take a few moments to listen to this one song called Parisienne walkways. That one was real nice. I really should get into his music. I was saddened when he died, a real loss for the guitarcommunity.
Real purty playing as well. I've always found your playing the best when you go for melody and feel, Elmo Moore is more Karjalainen
@ I loved the whole Live in Stockholm thing.
Wow!!! I`m sure Gary would feel honoured that you covered it so magnificently Elmo 12/10 from me !!!
Thank you very much :)
You my friend are number one (1) all time greatest player, So much feeling on your playing. Thank you.
Thank you very much Anthony! That's some big praise. I feel humbled.
Check out Gary’s live in London album from a couple of years ago , amazing raw tone and playing
Didn't grow up exposed to much Gary Moore but this is the song I identify with him. I love the emotion expressed and you do feel it too.
Thank you Steve!
As usual Elmo greta playing . I met Garry a couple of times when he was very young and with Skid Row and he was some player even ay 17.
Thanks! Man, that must have been cool.
Beautiful!!!!!! This song is so emotional to me,and you nailed it!!!
Cheers Noa!
This is such a great song. Just epic the way you play it sir. Sharing.
This was great. Nice feedback at 1:35 😁 amazing tone and playing. Kiitos!
Kiitos 😊
Very cool man. Great song. Plus, he played in one of the best bands ever. Thin Lizzy. John Sykes was a huge influence on me as well as Ted Nugent, Aerosmiths guitarists, UFO, Scorpians Mattius Jabs, Yngwie, Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, all the cool 80s guys. Etc. Of course RANDY Fucking Rhodes was a god. !!! 😛👍So many great guitar players. I grew up in a great time.
Cheers :)
Wow , Elmo that was great , love your tone , one of my favourite songs , my favourite git-player is marty friedman ,
Thanks Joe :)
And yeah, Marty is a great player.
The stratocaster plus scalloped fingerboard and you my friend make amazing this song 🎸👏
Thank you :)
That was excellent. I still have my old LP of Cozy Powell's 'Over The Top' album which features Gary playing The Loner and I saw him a few times back in the day. Gary is buried not far from me here on the south coast of England, I visit his grave at least once a year to pay my respects.
Thank you :)
Where did you get that scalloped guitar/fretboard? (welho?) Is that made in Turku/Åbo?
Yep. Made by a friend of mine.
Thänks Elmo Welmo Mälmsteen Kärjäläinen for This 🤘❤️🤘WHAU WHAU WHAU🇫🇮💙
Man tackar :)
F'ng great playing, tone, and feel. Love it. Gary's one of my all-time faves, and you crushed it bro.
Thank you very much :)
Very like it, beautifully covered, good style man!))👍
Is that single coils? And what is it, tell pls
Stacked humbuckers. Seymour Duncan YJM Furys. And thanks 😊
Great work as usual Elmo.
Note for note during most of the track and then going in to your own style towards the end.
All awesome! :)
Fav G Moore track would be this one or Empty Rooms.
Fav guitarist John Petrucci
Thank you very much 😊
A masterful cover my friend, you did Gary proud with this one.🤘😎🎸
Thank you :)
Amazing cover, it just hits different. it exploits all the piled up loneliness .
Thank you 😊
Elmo what I love about you is you can play really fast and really slow and it always sounds great! I can't do the scalloped fretboard.. neanderthal left hand. Just curious what pickups are in that guitar ?? that one always sounds great .
Thanks :) Those are Seymour Duncan YJM Furys.
Great version of this beautiful piece.Great job, Elmo!
Thanks!
Brilliant mate, one of my all time favourite Gary tracks & sounds much better than the Doug Aldrich version on the Moore Blues for Gary tribute album, thanks for the video👍🤘
Thank you very much Martin! :)
Elmo Karjalainen my pleasure mate👍
Very nice cover Elmo. Did you use a backing track or rerecord the drums and bass yourself? Nice bends and vibrato.
Thanks Dave! Made the backing track myself.
9k views is alarming
Awesome! This is one of the few songs I actually learned to play, though put my own spin on it when I did a recording, some years ago.
Cheers!
Just watched this you did this song justice elmo gary is one of my favorites to again fantastic job Elmo
Thank you :)
If I had closed my eyes, I'd thought it the man himself...GREAT cover!!!
Thank you very much Ed :)
only the gods touch in that way there are no more words
Veeeery nice version!!!
It's always so difficult to play this without being a copy of Gary. Well done, i especially like the right use of the wah. Thanks
Thank you Roberto 😊
My song ( on romantic mode )
amazing great plaing
Thanks!
Nicely played Elmo - Gary Moore would have approved of this version.
Thanks :)
Love your playing.....beautifully covered!! X
Thanks Jill!
Great playing man. Reminds me of what a great loss Gary is to all of us guitar players. A full on player who also could play with immense feeling and soul. Keeping his legacy alive is important and you are doing a fine job of it .
Thanks John! And yeah, he is sorely missed.
Great cover of a song I always loved from Gary Moore, and Elmo you are a top player, amazing guitar! Happy new year 2019!
Merci beaucoup Yves :)
And a happy 2019 to you too!
Moore, Schenker, Malmsteen and Takasaki are the only guitarists i only really listen to now...i used to have about 30 favourites but over time you realise who had the magic. This sir is a superb rendition of the loner....Plenty of pain is needed for this track and you really pushed it here. Excellent.
Thanks 😊👍
Great Job My Brother Scandinavian!
Thanks :)
Might be the best cover of this classic tune. 5/5.
Kiitos Lauri :)
Fantastic and beautiful job Elmo!!
Thank you John!
Nice version! I used a little wah in my cover of the song too.
Cheers!
It needs some backbone to play these legendary renditions and you nailed it in a true spirit.
Thank you Majid!
That was beautifully fantastic!! You are now officially better than Yngwie. Seriously you are rapidly becoming my favourite guitarist. Definitely my all time favourite Finnish (sp?) guitarist!
Thank you! That's some praise 😊
You deserve it. You play solely for the joy of sharing the music. That’s a point that’s almost lost here in the Snakes...... I mean States, oh dear...👹
Elmo Karjalainen eeeeeeehhhhhhh could be...(in Brooklyn rabbit voice there)
:D
I just saw Yngwie. Him and Vai played a bunch together. Yngwie's guitar was WAY too loud and I couldn't even hear Vai. He needed to turn his amp up big time. I thought I'd never say it but Vai was pitiful BUT Malmsteen burned it up. What a master of his guitar he is! He does a lot of theatrical tricks. (like Vai) but man, that dude is out of hand. One can't even compare Elmo and Yngwie as they're completely different. Elmo is not a showman like Yngwie nor as loud and hard. Elmo's touch blows Yngwie away but as far a a master who controls his space as a guitar player there are very few who can even be talked about in the same breath. To me, Elmo is better than him as far as his sensitivity and sense of humor but for HARD ROCK and control of the guitar with tricks and speed there are very few who can hang with the showman Yngwie Malmsteen. As Doyle Bramhall II taught me without coming out and saying it there is no best, only different. Every guitar player has their something that is different but to say someone is the best is a subjective thing. AND IF THERE IS A BEST IT'S HARD TO ARGUE AGAINST JIMI HENDRIX, THE INNOVATIVE PIONEER AND UNDERRATED SONGWRITER WHO PUT IT ALL OUT THERE. HENDRIX IS LOVE AND REBELLION ABOUT WHAT'S BAD AND EVIL THAT SURROUNDS HIM. There will never be another Jimi Hendrix
The way you play this melody is amazing.
Thanks!
Incredible version, amazed by the love Gary gets,as a Belfast native, possibly my favorite of his songs joint with shapes of things.
Formidabil The best Elmo Karjalainen
Thank you 😊
Is there a way we can pay for a transcription of your exact rendition?
Sorry, no.

@@lawrencealvarado3556 Cheers! I actually have an Empty Rooms solo somewhere on my channel. Gary Moore was the reason I started playing :)
Loistoveto! Ihmettelin miksi mulle tuli heti Ritchie Blackmore alussa mieleen, ajattelin että ehkä sun soundissa on jotain yhteistä. Sitten tajusin, että tällä biisillähän on aika paljon yhtäläisyyksiä Blackmoren huomattavasti tätä Mooren biisiä uudempaan _Carry on Jon_-kappaleeseen, joka on Jon Lordin muistolle. Jännä etten ole tätä aiemmin huomannut. Joka tapauksessa, Gary olisi varmasti ylpeä.
Kiitos paljon! Täytyykin tsekata tuo biisi.
:D
You really love Gay Moore's playing? Excellent!
I do indeed. Thanks :)
Bravo friend,very nice🙃🙃🙃🙃
Thank you very much :)
One of my favourite songs, Elmo. You played the heck out of that. Stunning playing my friend.
Thanks Darren :)
I love the tone of your guitar on this song (Welmo?)
Welmo :)
Magistral du grand merci elmo .. à bientôt 🤘
Merci beaucoup!
Just an incredible song. Any advice on settings to get this lovely tone. I know I don’t have you fingers, and ability, but ...
Cheers! Use a proper valve amp and a cab with good speakers. I use a Marshall Plexi and a cab with Celestion Greenbacks. Add in a nice overdrive pedal, and some delay and you're set. A good guitar also helps :D
Ok. Was wondering about buying the new studio Marshall combo (v-type speaker), or the Silver jubilee mini (greenback speaker) combos. Hope they will fit the bill. Little apartment with lots of neighbors limits my rig. Was thinking the dd3 delay from Boss and have no idea for the overdrive pedal. Any suggestions?
@@renetvedtpedersen5048 Neigbours are a pain :D
How much is the DD-3? It should be good. I haven't tried it, but Boss makes some good pedals. A Mini Flashback could also do the trick. I think you should get the amp, and try to match the pedal to that. Difficult to say. If you're on a budget, then the Mosky D250 is absolutely brilliant. I have a video on that pedal, if you feel like having a look.
This was marvelous! I'll share!
Merci :)
I love the song and I love your cover of it!
