- Herbalife CEO Michael O. Johnson responds for the first time to Pershing Square hedge fund's Bill Ackman's pyramid scheme allegations in this interview with Giselle Fernandez for LA Magazine's video series "Big Shots.
Until now the war of words on Wall Street on the Herbalife story has been mostly one sided with Pershing Square Hedge Fund Manager Bill Ackman hurling vitriolic accusations against the company in an endless barrage for nearly twenty months. I wanted to understand more about this epic battle that has billionaires brawling on live television and the main accuser concerned over exploitation of poor Latinos as his motivation. We have 36 percent of our kids living in poverty, limited access to collateral to grow Latino businesses, high drop out rates, high unemployment rates and I can't remember any billionaires diving into these inequities causing salacious headlines of concern.
As far as I knew, Herbalife was one of those businesses that granted under-served communities a chance to be entrepreneurs and have access to nutrition products hard to come by in their communities. I have blogged about the disparity of wealth issues in this nation and the great divide of opportunity that is available for so many to access the dream. Herbalife always seemed like one of those companies that offered a shot and health products while at it. For that I was a fan.
When Bill Ackman bet a billion dollars against the company, vowed to take it down and has spent $50 million trying to do so, I was stunned by his doggedness. When Carl Ichan jumped in to defend the company and entered into a tirade against Ackman, it turned surreal. I was glued as if watching a tele-novela or an episode of J.R. Ewing's scandalous, Dallas. To counter all the noise, I wanted to hear what the man himself at the helm of Herbalife, had to say. When he agreed to an exclusive interview, it turned out Michael Johnson had a lot to say about the company he runs and champions. It will be up to the FTC to decide the company's fate. In the meantime, we finally hear from Johnson. It's clear in this interview he's not just the face of the company, this man's heart is in it and he defends Herbalife with the same ferocity we've come to know from his accusers.

It's about the product. I have been in several companies with similar models. They are basically franchising. So if the product is good, pay attention to that. Just don't speak with someone who pushes recruiting. If someone chooses a membership for a discount on the product great, but nobody wants to have the opportunity forced down their throats. So that is how I look at things. The Herbalife products have lasted, it is the representatives that you have to be aware of. We are human beings.

I think the distributors who lost their money are they who are money oriented themselves. I started using herbalife when I was in high school and I didn't have much money. I took the 25% discount just for my benefit that I can buy them cheaper. My distributor suggested me to upgrade it to 35% and 50% but I knew I couldn't do that with the money I had, not to mention the price that gets higher day by day and that you have to sell all the products before they are expired. My main purpose is to be healthy and not to be rich. If someone wants to buy from me after seeing the result is just a bonus. Most ppl who can buy hotels or travel the world are those who were rich before they joined herbalife or who started it at the old days when there were just a few ppl used some kind of products.

Like the OP said, if you are all about money then you wont go far. Ask a real distributor what they would do if they won the lottery tomorrow. If they are doing the business to help people, they will tell you that they plan on working at their establishment. People are just misinformed or cant interpret the correct ideas. Like when you hear a success story, you arent suppose to be like, that's me. It may take you years to get to a position that someone got in 12 months. The point is, each and every single person must be taught the same thing but in different ways so that they undertand it correctly. Me as a kid I grew up looking up to a president that got to that position in 1 year. I said I was going to be the youngest president in that company. Guess what that didnt happen, and before my hopes crashed down my mother told me when I was 14 that if I made it congrats but dont be discouraged if you dont.

Herbalife has helped a lot ppl to loose and or maintain healthy weight ppl that say they bounced or got worst was because they went back to eating larger or bigger portions and stopped working out. Court filings found that over 86% of HL distributors lose money. This doesnt include people who buy product for personal use with distributor discount. Look it up, you deserve to know the truth.
That 86% loss is just looking at cash, and doesn't account for the hours of unpaid labor people in selling their product. Your time is worth more than this.
here's what happens to some people, they but a distributorship as a close friend of mine did 6 yrs ago and it was all of her savings, well, the upline didn't do anything to help her and she needed help, the upline got what she wanted out of it and dropped my friend, and that was the end of it, she used the products up and was out about 900 bucks, I think this happens quite often to naive people, and this man has no idea that his company is set up so that a person can just dump another one after they get someone to sign up, it's not a good plan and because of it, it doesn't matter if this works, the compensation is not set up well, and they make a ton of money with those who sign up and never do anything else with the company, because it's pennies to make these products to begin with

Today ive received my first herbal life product of aloe vera drink concentrate mango flavor. Reason why i bought their product? I have made so .any researches in the internet and consumer reviews that this item helped them with digestive problems, like acid reflux. Which i am suffering from since friday. I belive that this can help this symptoms and can give relief. I didnt join to be a member but only as a consumer. I wanna try this aloe vera drink and im hoping this can help me with this reflux. When someone buys a product, they spend money. Distributors buy the products for their own use, to sell or consume. Some people buy products from GNC and others buy products from Herbalife. I have been doing the business for four years and get to be a present parent as an entrepreneur you do have to put in the work to help people I have not lost no money being a part of herbalife. I use to be an optician making my eye care company making them 50k a month and getting paid 3k a month and with herbalife I can make the 3k basically selling 15k of product I can give my self a raise at any time of day I decide to clock in from my phone
& the only way you’ll fail in any business is if you don’t put in the work but yet put in the work for corporate America making your bosses rich

When I joined Amway in 1990 my mother did everything she could to get me out and even threatened to call the police. I am so glad that she did what she did to escape this brainwashing pyramid.
