Lucy is the scapegoat for major medical malpractice.. what’s even more annoying is if that dr owned up he wouldn’t even lose his medical license it would have been an out of court settlement.. but he was happy enough to blame the nurse and watch as she was burnt at the stake like a witch hunt and locked up for life .. this girl worked most days of the week overtime to cover shifts they were short staffed for … of course she was going to be on duty for a lot of deaths.
It’s very interesting to get a perspective from a medic who is in a position to evaluate the medical evidence. What do you think about the babies that had high insulin levels but an absence of C-peptide, suggesting they were exogenously administered with insulin? That always looked a bit suspicious to me from what I (a non-medical) read about it. (Doesn’t necessarily mean Lucy administered it).
I don't think the truth lies somewhere in the middle, either you've a killer or not. Lucy Letby didn't need to be actually caring for the baby, and in one case wasn't there. Often many people around, but no one saw anything, not even the doctor that reckoned many months later he saw her do nothing. What was hidden from the jury was medical incompetence, the unit only had consultants do ward rounds twice a week, most care given by junior doctors leading to circumstances like them trying 5 times to put in lines or a needle being left in a baby leading to a punctured lung, 3 chest drains (one of which was put in wrongly by the same doctor who said they didn't see her do anything) and much more. They were taking babies too sick for the unit, or couldn't transfer out promptly very sick babies. There was poor infection control and plumbing issues, pseudomonas isolated in the taps. That alone is a huge risk, premature babies have poor immune systems. None of that apparently affected care, but it should have been front and centre at the trial rather than the not very novel multiple claims of air embolism, which seem to chop and change. The insulin claim is extremely dodgy too, they left out the baby with a condition which causes high insulin who was transferred out and failed to highlight both babies had risk factors, one had a mother with gestational diabetes. They both recovered too. Never proved any insulin was given.
