    We had soldier fly larvae in our composter at one point. They were great! Processed the compost in days and the quails loved them!

    Thanks for the video, you can also try broccoli well cooked... and crushed, they smell really bad!!! If you only want fruit fly larvae, which are smaller for small fish, place a net so that normal flies cannot get in! only fruit flies.

    Hi, thanks for the video. I made one the same about 3 weeks ago and I could see the flies going in but now there's a lot of ants in there, is that a problem? Will the ants eat the maggots?

    Great vid! I've made a smaller version strongly based on this. The flies love it, the maggots arrive, but they prefer to climb the walls of the bucket rather than climbing up the outlet pipe! Is there something in particular about your irrigation pipe? This is soooo close to working for me! Thanks!

      Good ? I have the same problem they clime the walls never the ramp I thought about just drilling holes at top so they can fall out it is under a overhang so chickens could walk around it

    Awesome, Matt.. there is problem with the landfil in my town and I'm thinking of making this. You said you use animal carcasses, including rat. My question is how could we surpress the smell of rotting carcasses?

      Hello, with this design there isn’t any smell coming from the harvester at all. Only when you open the lid.

    Hi Matty, Is there any modification I can make to also catch the flies? My Chickens love them as an additional source of protein. I also would like to reduce the fly population, not let them go elsewhere and keep procreating.

    I love this, I make maggots for my Silkie farm (which is probably why I'm still single lol) but I read that allowing maggots to eat dead mice or rats can cause botulism, have u heard of this?

    Brilliant system.I found your channel from Rob Bob Aquaponic channel . I have one question Do you have any odours emanating from the system? I don't want to get complaints from neighbours lol.

      Hi Ange, Rob Bob’s Channel has been a huge inspiration for me. Thanks for coming and checking out my channel also.
      There isn’t an odour while the lid is on however you do get a good hit with the smell when you open it up. My neighbours haven’t complained so far so I’m taking that as a good sign.
      No, generally speaking the smell is contained inside the bucket.

      Hi Matty, thankyou for the reply. I shall endeavour to make your system. Been thinking of different ways to harvest maggots but I am very impressed with the system that you have made. Neighbours kitchen windows are close to chookpen. I like them and didn't want upset them with a feeder. The way you present your videos is very informative and fun to watch. I think you will do well on you tube.

    Great easy to understand video.
    What's your thoughts on using a 44gallon plastic container? I want something big enough to take some large road kill. Will the maggots have trouble climbing the extra distance on the ramp?

    Is it necessary to perforate(make small holes on the sides of the bucket) to allow in air for the maggots?

      You already have a hole for flies to enter on top of the bucket. It's not required to have a good air circulation.

    Hi, I've made one of these but it's not worked for me yet, is it normal to have dead flies inside the bucket? I would have thought they would fly out once they laid their eggs? I didn't see any maggots when I opened the lid? Thanks

      @mattysbackyard9244 Hi, I've had it baited for about 2 weeks but it's cold outside in the UK so only starting to get flies as it warms up other than the odd one. I've changed the pipe inside for the maggots to climb up, I originally used a flexi pipe inside and maybe the maggots couldn't climb up it? Thanks for taking the time to reply.

      They can’t climb upside down on the inside of the bucket lid with falling back down to the bottom.

      Hi Yaya, it takes around 5-7 days depending on the species of fly.

      A few of them probably try to. However there is no exit from the outside of the tube.

      I’d recommend multiple systems. However it is winter here this time of year so I’m yet to test it’s productivity in the summer.

      @@thehalfacrepasture great to hear you have plenty of maggots. No, I haven’t had any issues with them getting up the tube. Give it time, if you have made it similar to my design then I doubt you’ll have any issues. Cheers

      They only seek to exit the food source when they are ready to pupate.

    From personal experience I’ve found BSF larvae’s favorite foods to also include avocado (along with carcasses). There have been plenty of times when I didn’t have any carcasses or meat scraps to feed them, but their numbers exponentially grew while I had access to a ton of overripe avocados that I let them feast on.

    My grandma had a maggot farm a bit like that, she used the remains of mice and rats that her traps caught, it stank like you would imagine it would, but damm if the chickens didn't love her for it.
