How much maggots do you get from 1kg of rotting meat? How long would that take? Can you use animal poop to generate emergency protein in a long term survival situation?
Thanks for the video, you can also try broccoli well cooked... and crushed, they smell really bad!!! If you only want fruit fly larvae, which are smaller for small fish, place a net so that normal flies cannot get in! only fruit flies.
Hi, thanks for the video. I made one the same about 3 weeks ago and I could see the flies going in but now there's a lot of ants in there, is that a problem? Will the ants eat the maggots?
Great vid! I've made a smaller version strongly based on this. The flies love it, the maggots arrive, but they prefer to climb the walls of the bucket rather than climbing up the outlet pipe! Is there something in particular about your irrigation pipe? This is soooo close to working for me! Thanks!
Good ? I have the same problem they clime the walls never the ramp I thought about just drilling holes at top so they can fall out it is under a overhang so chickens could walk around it
Awesome, Matt.. there is problem with the landfil in my town and I'm thinking of making this. You said you use animal carcasses, including rat. My question is how could we surpress the smell of rotting carcasses?
Hi Matty, Is there any modification I can make to also catch the flies? My Chickens love them as an additional source of protein. I also would like to reduce the fly population, not let them go elsewhere and keep procreating.
I love this, I make maggots for my Silkie farm (which is probably why I'm still single lol) but I read that allowing maggots to eat dead mice or rats can cause botulism, have u heard of this?
Brilliant system.I found your channel from Rob Bob Aquaponic channel . I have one question Do you have any odours emanating from the system? I don't want to get complaints from neighbours lol.
Hi Ange, Rob Bob’s Channel has been a huge inspiration for me. Thanks for coming and checking out my channel also. There isn’t an odour while the lid is on however you do get a good hit with the smell when you open it up. My neighbours haven’t complained so far so I’m taking that as a good sign. No, generally speaking the smell is contained inside the bucket.
Hi Matty, thankyou for the reply. I shall endeavour to make your system. Been thinking of different ways to harvest maggots but I am very impressed with the system that you have made. Neighbours kitchen windows are close to chookpen. I like them and didn't want upset them with a feeder. The way you present your videos is very informative and fun to watch. I think you will do well on you tube.
Hey Matty, Great easy to understand video. What's your thoughts on using a 44gallon plastic container? I want something big enough to take some large road kill. Will the maggots have trouble climbing the extra distance on the ramp?
Hi, I've made one of these but it's not worked for me yet, is it normal to have dead flies inside the bucket? I would have thought they would fly out once they laid their eggs? I didn't see any maggots when I opened the lid? Thanks
@mattysbackyard9244 Hi, I've had it baited for about 2 weeks but it's cold outside in the UK so only starting to get flies as it warms up other than the odd one. I've changed the pipe inside for the maggots to climb up, I originally used a flexi pipe inside and maybe the maggots couldn't climb up it? Thanks for taking the time to reply.
@@mattysbackyard9244 So I’ve made my first system. I’ve got tons of maggots on the meat, but I’m concerned they won’t make their way up the tube I have set up. Have you had any trouble with this?
@@thehalfacrepasture great to hear you have plenty of maggots. No, I haven’t had any issues with them getting up the tube. Give it time, if you have made it similar to my design then I doubt you’ll have any issues. Cheers
@@addyruss4903 how long have they been in the bucket? They may not be ready to exit yet. They only seek to exit the food source when they are ready to pupate.
From personal experience I’ve found BSF larvae’s favorite foods to also include avocado (along with carcasses). There have been plenty of times when I didn’t have any carcasses or meat scraps to feed them, but their numbers exponentially grew while I had access to a ton of overripe avocados that I let them feast on.
My grandma had a maggot farm a bit like that, she used the remains of mice and rats that her traps caught, it stank like you would imagine it would, but damm if the chickens didn't love her for it.
Going to use this method. Thanks mate!
No problem 👍
5:38. That cycle of usage you describe is worth the thumbs up.
Thank you 😊
Cheers Mat. Love the simplicity of your video. Chockfull of info and no fillers 🙏
Great explanation and video examples. This is the design I will be using.
Thank you Matt.
Awesome!
Sir,your method is very simple and easy to understand and make it possible as well as practicable.
Matty, very good
Farmer here in Florida USA
U have wise words
I very much like your maggot setup
Best from the sunshine ☀️ State
Wicked set up dude
Cheers for sharing
I clicked on this video because "WTF!!"...I left wanting to grow maggots. Thanks Matty. 🙄
Same
😂
Do the flys get trapped inside? Doubling as a fly trap? Or do they come out after laying their eggs?
I always hit like for maggots
This is a very good video well done
Circle of life
Hey mate, are you producing any more videos? Really enjoy them but can’t see any from you more recent then 7 months ago 😭
We had soldier fly larvae in our composter at one point. They were great! Processed the compost in days and the quails loved them!

I'm definitely going to try your set up!
Love it! Thanks heaps mate!!
Making one in Arizona!! Thank you!!
Top idea Matty, I’m at Tamborine Village with 150 Jade Perch and chooks, good to see a local doing the same stuff, one day we should catch up
Hey mate! Sounds great. I’d love to catch up!
Great concept. Though I don’t like flies or maggots. 😅
Excellent video! Would fish work as a bait?
what happens to all the meat and waste and other things in the container?
Very good
Good 😊
Awesome, Matt.. there is problem with the landfil in my town and I'm thinking of making this. You said you use animal carcasses, including rat. My question is how could we surpress the smell of rotting carcasses?
Hello, with this design there isn’t any smell coming from the harvester at all. Only when you open the lid.
Great idea.!
I've heard of bran or pollard to clean the filth off the maggots, not necessary?
Nice👍,,thank you, really the information I need
Hi Matty, Is there any modification I can make to also catch the flies? My Chickens love them as an additional source of protein. I also would like to reduce the fly population, not let them go elsewhere and keep procreating.
Try Black Soldier Flies
In ordor issue...does this concern me

Nicely done
Sir...I think the liquid produced by the maggot can be used as fertilizer for plants...
Is it healthy to feed boilers chicks with maggots made from backyard flies
I love this bucket, I'm going to try it. I'm concerned though won't I have a problem of flies?
This is absolutely awesome
I'm doing this very soon

@@angerainbow9200 Ok great. Thank you for your positive feedback. I really appreciate it.

Yes, I actually have a Mealworm Farm and am currently working on a How To Video for them also. 😀👍🏼
I plan on creating one for my chickens
Hey Matty,
Great easy to understand video.

Perfect. I think a 44 gallon container will be fine. I don’t think the maggots will have any trouble making their way out. Cheers
Is it necessary to perforate(make small holes on the sides of the bucket) to allow in air for the maggots?
You already have a hole for flies to enter on top of the bucket. It's not required to have a good air circulation.
Thankyou so much! Very helpful video. I will do one today ❤️👍
Awesome. All the best!

Looking at this for my European perch.

Thanks for idea....how to reduce fish waste smell ????
great idea
Be a good use for the fish frames from fish harvested from the aquaponics 🤔
Absolutely mate!
Good on ya mate 👏
But what about the bones?
great video.what stops the maggots from crawling out the inlet?
Thanks Andre.
They can’t climb upside down on the inside of the bucket lid with falling back down to the bottom.
@@mattysbackyard9244 thanks mate
Hi Nice idea
Can you tell me how long it takes for the production of maggots from laying eggs to the harvest???
Hi Yaya, it takes around 5-7 days depending on the species of fly.
Do they not climb up the outside of the tube
A few of them probably try to. However there is no exit from the outside of the tube.
I think you should use Black soldier fly instead of housefly.
This is blow fly...
Why@@Svjvc-qp2zl
Why not housefly
Nice cages
Hand full of maize meal in the jar and those maggots will be top quality.
Do you think this system would reduce your local fly population? They're horrible in Florida! Great video!
Try black soldier flies
Free fish bait👍
Brilliant design
I was looking for a cheap way to supplement my chicken feed. I was not disappointed 😂
Also, you should be washing those maggots
i’m so entertained rn
Is the one system enough for you or are you using multiple?
I’d recommend multiple systems. However it is winter here this time of year so I’m yet to test it’s productivity in the summer.

@@mattysbackyard9244 yeah they are not traveling up the pipe to the jar on the outside.

Can't u just modify a housebin to catch them all
Take note sugar glider owners !! YUMMY YUMMY, good by to the akubra corks ey

I can't eat my chicks...we have bonded.
Sad seeing quail in cages like that. They thrive in a run bring able to dust bathe and forage .
