He offered to leave his great shield to protect Sif from the abyss. Sif is best boy. Even though he lost to Manus, he was able to keep the abyss from spreading past Oolacile, so the story was half right. The player just finished the job with Sif's help. Artorias was inspired by the Berserk manga. He was originally right handed, but because of an oopsie with the cover art, he became left handed.
