zabutom - bice3 (phandral - spiral) (2004)

Ages ago I found the song “Phandral - Spiral”, an OPL2 FM chiptune made in the format RAD, Reality Adlib Tracker. Can’t remember exactly how I found this track, but the melody and bassline were so addictive that I just had to make my own hommage to it, resulting in this Amiga .MOD with the typical immature work title.
OPL2 FM? RAD? MOD? What's all this you ask?
Well, you could explain it like a DJ, digging for vinyls and cassettes in dusty old crates in a flea market, or something. Except you don’t have any record covers to give you a hint of the content, just a list of files on a screen.
At the time in the early 00’s, it was as if the DOS era was already ancient history, and if you still had a computer even capable of running DOS, what the hell were you doing?
Growing up I was always one or two generations behind when it came to computer hardware, which is part of why I got so deep into chiptune. Going to a LAN party as a teenager just to make pixel art, geek out in Fast Tracker II and play emulators like NESticle and GeneCYST, while everyone else was playing Counter Strike.

hey zabutom, i really love your music especially the zeta force album, i dont know if you made zeta force on a tracker or whatnot, i actually dont know a lot about chiptune or tracker music i just really love that album in particular and i wanted to thank you for making it.
i wanted to ask you, how do you go about writing music? do you just go with the flow or consciously think about structure of the song? especially with trackers it seems like quite the task, your music just seems so well written

Thanks so much for your comment! Zeta Force was also made with trackers, Fast Tracker 2 specifically. Writing music is alot like writing a diary sometimes, you just start writing something every day and see what comes out. Or I have an idea already, sometimes not even musical - but some idea for a sound, trying something in a different software or something, and then music comes out of that. I try to think consciously about the form of the song but mostly through listening and trying to "feel" what's supposed to come next, or if I need to remove something.. It can be different, very fast sometimes and take a very long time other times. If you work enough with the same tool it becomes easier and you can focus more on your ideas than to make it work..
