The foundations of quantum theory rests on its symmetries. For example, it should be impossible to distinguish our universe from one that is that is the perfect mirror opposite in charge, handedness, and the direction of time. But one by one these symmetries were found to be broken, threatening to break all of physics along with them.

In his famous lectures on physics, Richard Feynman talks about what it means to expect the universe to be identical in the mirror. For it to be parity-symmetric. He invites us to imagine a clock in a mirror reflection - numbers are backwards, components are all flipped left to right, and it ticks counterclockwise. And then we imagine building that mirror clock in reality. Everything is constructed as though reflected. Numbers get painted backwards. Every screw with right-handed thread or right-spiraling coil is replaced with a left-handed version. Our intuition tells us that the mirror clock should tick in exactly the same way, except counter-clockwise. Our intuition would be wrong.

Do not fear the day you are mistaken for a medical doctor on a plane.
Fear the day when they ask for a doctor on a plane and mean an astrophysicist.
"I have a doctorate in quantum physics. I can tell you what's wrong with him, or his position, but not both."
If a plane needs an astrophysicist then the plane has gone way too high.

Well that doesn’t make a lot of sense cause astrophysics is nonsense and therefore completely useless. oh I get it, that’s the whole point. Astrophysics not only has both to do with us here on earth, it’s actually totally wrong about the stars as well. It’s impossible for stars to be made of nothing but a gasious plasma. Besides the visual evidence of seismic surface waves and solid body rotation, gravitational collapse wouldn’t happen to a gas alone. Furthermore, it violates thermodynamics. “No system can do work upon itself by therefore raising its own temperature. Also for the fusion reaction to occur the temperature would have to be extensive, those violate the 2nd and 0th laws. Unfortunately there are no words to prove this theory just topological evidence that is rare to come by. I would only trust one who utilizes faster than light particles. I’m not trusting the word of a human in this universe

@@alive2583 not my field of research so I'm not the one to ask. I am working on optimisations in weight space for neural networks based on physics equations hunting for ones that work, so my work is empirical and applied but this one just happened to not be helpful to me yet.
If you have the notion that things must be figured out immediately to be proven useful then you've probably not investigated the history of applied maths. It's very common things like this prove useful decades or centuries later.
Hah, your comment at the end... My mother was a paramedic, and she told me several times about people coming up to her and her coworker at an emergency scene and saying, "I'm a doctor, can I help?!" She learned very quickly to ask, "Doctor of what?" The best response she reported was "Theology!"
As far as your concern goes, and as far as I understand things, they generally ask over the PA for a _medical_ doctor, rather than looking for people with the title "Dr." and approaching them individually-for this very reason. And remember, in some cultures it's _normal_ to expect to be addressed by your seniormost _academic_ title.

@@daleowens7695I remember watching a show years ago about a woman who was an atheist but she got her degree in theology and was studying ancient texts because even though she wasn't a Christian she said she majored in it because Christianity has such a huge impact on our everyday lives regardless of religion or spiritual practice.

Came for the physics concepts that were well and truly over my head and stayed for the man's pleasant voice.
This series does a great job of making clear that getting even the faintest, foggiest notion of what is going on would require several orders of magnitude more effort than I'm prepared to give it. (And of course there's no reason to believe that such effort would be sufficient.)

It's not amazing. Diversity is good, but too much diversity of common knowledge about reality can't be good. It means we don't evolve fast enough because obscurantism and ignorance is too widespread for an interconnected world.

It seems to me that the best way to discover the fundamental design of the Universe is to study it's blue print which appears to be the Flower of Life. Check out the N. Pole of Saturn for a clue as to how to read it. Time ticks as the hexagon evolves smaller it's sides and angles carved out by vortices of energy like whirlpools in the ocean. Our cells pull electrons from protons to create a pressure gradient in an ocean that cavitates with the beat of the heart. It seems that this electron transfer chain looks a lot like the internal structure of the Great Pyramid where the free standing granite slabs above the king's chamber could create an attraction of electrons by resonating with the cavitation of the water filled pyramid perpetuated with the closing of a one way valve in the subterranean chamber like the cavatation created by the beat of our heart that creates a Sonic wave. Tesla invented a one way valve and built a tower that connected to the ground water on Long island that supposedly shot electricity through the air. I've only connected these analogies recently but I'm finding that this analogy is repeated in a great many places. My assertions can be easily checked out and I'm sure that any who do so with an open mind will quickly find their own assertions that few others have ever seen because they are backtracking from what is observed in the present instead of studying the basis for all that exists which is the Flower of Life. It's derivative dropped from Times Square. It's the water droplet and the ocean.

@@TheColemancreek - It does: you cannot hope for the atoms to move backwards in time at all, much less rebuild an unbroken egg if they'd ever did, you need a an actual chicken for that, and that's quite an inconvenience for theoretical physicists.

My (amateur) assumption is that in a MWI multiverse, time reversal would create new universes in the same way as in a non-time-reversed multiverse. So that would mean that not only is the universe splitting all the time, it's also combining all the time, from numerous possible pasts. I have no idea whether this idea holds water, but it's intriguing, partly because it seems to imply that time travel would be... somewhat problematic. I've even gone so far as to draw diagrams for what would happen to a hapless time traveller attempting a very simple trip into the past to alter something (I'm a writer). Things quickly got WAY out of control and I ended up with all sorts of duplicated people and confused onlookers and imbalances. I've abandoned the idea for now as I couldn't see a way to force it to create a coherent storyline :)

@@kaiceecrane3884 - It's debatable but one could argue that PBS Space-Time was not good enough to explain the issue in terms available for the average person. Some people will like because oh-well-they-tried, others will dislike because trying is not good enough. There must be diversity.

Sounds like the audio was clipping, they probably had to 'rescue' some bad audio with a filter in post.
Main mic probably didn't work and they used camera's internal mic as a backup.
At first, I thought it was a joke to illustrate different energy scales.

On the connection between quantum mechanics and entropy:
I'm with Sean Caroll on this one ... I think it's a simple matter of "many worlds" (and his justification for many worlds will make you scoff at any other interpretation). When an interaction happens, the quantum states split according to the equations (this we know) and of course YOU happen to be in a RANDOM one of those resulting wave functions (worlds). This NATURALLY brings entropy because it's more likely for you to end up in a world with higher entropy by definition.
I could be mistaken, but wouldn't that require that there be a wildly non-uniform distribution of entropy among these wavefunctions? Entropy being what it is, I find this hard to imagine.
@@marcushendriksen8415 I think it would but I don't see how it can be avoided. Take Schrödingers cat in a box but replace the cat by a valve that sits between a vacuum and a chamber full of gas. It will end up both opened and closed and the opened one will have a lot higher entropy. What is there in the physics that could prevent this uneven entropy distribution?

Pseudo vectors do not get flipped under parity transformation, like regular vectors.

Regarding string theory being science, Karl Popper is not the end all of the meaning of science, and falsifiability, while a strong and important feature in science, is far to narrow to describe what real scientists do. A large part of science, maybe the lion’s share, is really about just exploring, cataloguing, classifying. Even if String theory is eventually shown unprovable, or supplanted by something else, we still explored a promising passageway using principles of rational analysis rooted in empirical science. That sure sounds like science to me.

A comment on your dispute regarding the string theory. In my opinion, as long as the string theory can't be used to make testable predictions about physics, it's a mathematical tool, not a theory of the universe. The claim that universe can be explained through string theory is on similar level as claim that universe can be explained through mathematics. We may have good reasons to believe it's true but we don't don't know how to do that.
And it all honestly, it might be that even current mathematics as a whole is not the right tool to explain the universe.
What alternative do we have to maths though? Not being combative, genuinely curious. I see a lot of comments like these, but no one seems to have a workable (or even an unworkable) alternative.
We don't have such alternative, obviously. If there was a logically consistent construct where particles are the basic building stones as simple as 1+1=2, it would be considered part of mathematics anyway.

My only notion is that in such theory I'd expect the particles and their interactions to be the basic building blocks, not results of complex calculations. We have based our number theory on our macroscopic experience, we "know" that 1+1=2 because our experience tells us that there is such a thing as distinct objects that can be put together. But from the particles perspective, 1+1=2 almost doesn't make sense. I'd expect the "particle maths" to start there, at the actual beginning.

Thank you for acknowledging that Feynman meant a literal reversal in time, this is something I have seen talked around from other enjoyers of physics as being a mathematical abstraction, e.g. the second version you give, but it's really not what Feynman meant, he meant it literally.

This is a very interesting show and I do enjoy seeing how far we are advancing in our knowledge of the working of the Universe and remember if we ever do get to the point of knowing all how uninteresting would the Universe become. I think it is fine for us to have to continue to struggle to understand and learn about our place in Space Time and that is even if we never get the answer to everything. I do look forward to learning a bit more with each one of your shows and the wonderful explanations you give. BTW I use to be against the idea of string theory but I have continued to go back to previous shows and I can agree even if not provable right now it is still theoretical science. All excepted science now started as theoretical science until it was proven and some of that proof took years and even centuries. Thank you for the increase in my understanding and please continue to inform and educate me.

It doesn't, that's why he said the connection between entropy and quantum mechanics is still not well understood. A CPT-flipped universe should spontaneously decrease in entropy as it rewinds itself back to the big bang but that... feels wrong, so there's probably something we still don't understand here.

How many problems in theory are because of infinity problems? My question relates to the idea that some of these infinity problems could be nixed if we understood that there is a point of no more subdividability in time and matter. It appears there is a Planck length of time and a Planck length of matter. Why does this not make some of these infinity problems vaporize? Will someone please explain this to me? Thanks
What about the opposite end? Is there a maximum length or age? If not, infinities remain.
@@coopergates9680 I would offer that there is a difference between an infinity that takes infinite time to express itself (e.g. reaching the edge of the universe), and an infinite that "should" appear in finite time, if the math is correct (e.g. forming a singularity).
@@secularmonk5176 In pure math, sure, it's easy to verify if something diverges at one and only one number (singularity, such as division by zero), but you can't measure something infinitely small any more than you can compute (finitely many) digits of Pi, or try to construct an angle of 20/3 degrees by starting with a 60 degree angle and bisecting portions of it using the infinite binary expansion of 1/9.
Planck isn't the smallest possible. It's the smallest we can measure with our current understanding of physics without a theory of quantum gravity. Once we have a theory of quantum gravity we can go beyond Planck measurements.
