I am working on optimisations in weight space for neural networks based on physics equations hunting for ones that work, so my work is empirical and applied but this one just happened to not be helpful to me yet. If you have the notion that things must be figured out immediately to be proven useful then you've probably not investigated the history of applied maths. It's very common things like this prove useful decades or centuries later.

My (amateur) assumption is that in a MWI multiverse, time reversal would create new universes in the same way as in a non-time-reversed multiverse. So that would mean that not only is the universe splitting all the time, it's also combining all the time, from numerous possible pasts. I have no idea whether this idea holds water, but it's intriguing, partly because it seems to imply that time travel would be... somewhat problematic. I've even gone so far as to draw diagrams for what would happen to a hapless time traveller attempting a very simple trip into the past to alter something (I'm a writer). Things quickly got WAY out of control and I ended up with all sorts of duplicated people and confused onlookers and imbalances. I've abandoned the idea for now as I couldn't see a way to force it to create a coherent storyline :)

On the connection between quantum mechanics and entropy: I'm with Sean Caroll on this one ... I think it's a simple matter of "many worlds" (and his justification for many worlds will make you scoff at any other interpretation). When an interaction happens, the quantum states split according to the equations (this we know) and of course YOU happen to be in a RANDOM one of those resulting wave functions (worlds). This NATURALLY brings entropy because it's more likely for you to end up in a world with higher entropy by definition.
I could be mistaken, but wouldn't that require that there be a wildly non-uniform distribution of entropy among these wavefunctions? Entropy being what it is, I find this hard to imagine.

Thank you for acknowledging that Feynman meant a literal reversal in time, this is something I have seen talked around from other enjoyers of physics as being a mathematical abstraction, e.g. the second version you give, but it's really not what Feynman meant, he meant it literally.
CPT symmetry implies antimatter is mater going backwards in time. This solves the existence of mater in our universe problem. At the big bang there was equal matter and antimatter but the antimatter went backwards in time so it couldn't interact with us and instead gave an antimatter antiuniverse expanding backwards. Of course, to us this is simply an unobservable big crunch.
Regarding string theory being science, Karl Popper is not the end all of the meaning of science, and falsifiability, while a strong and important feature in science, is far to narrow to describe what real scientists do. A large part of science, maybe the lion’s share, is really about just exploring, cataloguing, classifying. Even if String theory is eventually shown unprovable, or supplanted by something else, we still explored a promising passageway using principles of rational analysis rooted in empirical science. That sure sounds like science to me.

Well if you take the space time continuum numerical axes then broke it down over the vertical symmetric anatomical bio clock. That's what you actually see in a mirror. This is also understandable if you have a 2D thing and you go around it - it is a mirror of itself but it is actually not a single reflection - it is a reflection in both the 2D direction you travelled around and the 3D direction. So it's a double reflection (which has the same effect as a rotation).

A comment on your dispute regarding the string theory. In my opinion, as long as the string theory can't be used to make testable predictions about physics, it's a mathematical tool, not a theory of the universe. The claim that universe can be explained through string theory is on similar level as claim that universe can be explained through mathematics. We may have good reasons to believe it's true but we don't don't know how to do that. And it all honestly, it might be that even current mathematics as a whole is not the right tool to explain the universe.
What alternative do we have to maths though? Not being combative, genuinely curious. I see a lot of comments like these, but no one seems to have a workable (or even an unworkable) alternative.
We don't have such alternative, obviously. If there was a logically consistent construct where particles are the basic building stones as simple as 1+1=2, it would be considered part of mathematics anyway.
@@kasuha I agree with you there. Do you have any notion, however vague, of the form that the extensions we need to maths in order to tackle these issues properly, would have to take?
My only notion is that in such theory I'd expect the particles and their interactions to be the basic building blocks, not results of complex calculations. We have based our number theory on our macroscopic experience, we "know" that 1+1=2 because our experience tells us that there is such a thing as distinct objects that can be put together. But from the particles perspective, 1+1=2 almost doesn't make sense. I'd expect the "particle maths" to start there, at the actual beginning.

It doesn't, that's why he said the connection between entropy and quantum mechanics is still not well understood. A CPT-flipped universe should spontaneously decrease in entropy as it rewinds itself back to the big bang but that... feels wrong, so there's probably something we still don't understand here.
How many problems in theory are because of infinity problems? My question relates to the idea that some of these infinity problems could be nixed if we understood that there is a point of no more subdividability in time and matter. It appears there is a Planck length of time and a Planck length of matter. Why does this not make some of these infinity problems vaporize? Will someone please explain this to me? Thanks
@@coopergates9680 I would offer that there is a difference between an infinity that takes infinite time to express itself (e.g. reaching the edge of the universe), and an infinite that "should" appear in finite time, if the math is correct (e.g. forming a singularity).
@@secularmonk5176 In pure math, sure, it's easy to verify if something diverges at one and only one number (singularity, such as division by zero), but you can't measure something infinitely small any more than you can compute (finitely many) digits of Pi, or try to construct an angle of 20/3 degrees by starting with a 60 degree angle and bisecting portions of it using the infinite binary expansion of 1/9.
Planck isn't the smallest possible. It's the smallest we can measure with our current understanding of physics without a theory of quantum gravity. Once we have a theory of quantum gravity we can go beyond Planck measurements.

@@Dantheman1219 Treating it as a proper noun helps to distinguish our Universe from other theoretical universes, much the same way as we distinguish the Moon from other moons.
Entropy is an emergent property of the universe based on... the universe being composed of a lot of particles. It's a statistical phenomenon, not a fundamental requirement of the universe. Entropy basically just says that the universe trends to the statistically most likely state of the universe. But it's technically always possible (just really, really, REALLY unlikely) for entropy to be violated. EDIT: A law in science doesn't necessarily mean that the underlying physics REQUIRES that the thing be true. It's essentially a statement about OBSERVATION. A law means we always OBSERVE this property to hold. As such, we can call the 2nd law of thermodynamics a law, despite knowing that physics says it can, hypothetically (unlikely) be violated.
@Jeffrey Johnson Lol I get what you're saying, but in the long run, entropy always increases. Just like a few people in a casino might win some cash, but eventually, it's always the casino that wins. We're talking about the entire universe and its entire history. Allowing time to reverse would allow entropy to be reversed indefinitely throughout the universe. This certainly isn't possible as far as I know. But I guess I could be wrong.
As it sounded to me inversing T was just a reversal of Entropy. Atoms would grow instead of decay. Systems would become more ordered not less. The clock example would also be difficult to even detect as the cobalt would be absorbing particles not releasing them. I suppose the sensor would register when IT emitted the particle towards the cobalt.

Entropy could theoretically be reversed in an ALTERNATE universe, where the laws of physics are reversed such that entropy being reversed _does_ make sense, and in their universe a universe where entropy that _isn't_ reversed doesn't make sense. In this universe, photons and neutrinos collide to make particles, and stars are where heavy elements are decayed into lighter ones, where an evenly dispersed field of something that spreads out is infinitely less likely than a concentrated point of that something. Of course it doesn't make sense in our universe, it is a _different_ universe. Theoretical, sure, but then, it works just like ours but backwards.

This is a very interesting show and I do enjoy seeing how far we are advancing in our knowledge of the working of the Universe and remember if we ever do get to the point of knowing all how uninteresting would the Universe become. I think it is fine for us to have to continue to struggle to understand and learn about our place in Space Time and that is even if we never get the answer to everything. I do look forward to learning a bit more with each one of your shows and the wonderful explanations you give. BTW I use to be against the idea of string theory but I have continued to go back to previous shows and I can agree even if not provable right now it is still theoretical science. All excepted science now started as theoretical science until it was proven and some of that proof took years and even centuries. Thank you for the increase in my understanding and please continue to inform and educate me.

If you have the notion that things must be figured out immediately to be proven useful then you've probably not investigated the history of applied maths. It's very common things like this prove useful decades or centuries later.

My (amateur) assumption is that in a MWI multiverse, time reversal would create new universes in the same way as in a non-time-reversed multiverse. So that would mean that not only is the universe splitting all the time, it's also combining all the time, from numerous possible pasts. I have no idea whether this idea holds water, but it's intriguing, partly because it seems to imply that time travel would be... somewhat problematic. I've even gone so far as to draw diagrams for what would happen to a hapless time traveller attempting a very simple trip into the past to alter something (I'm a writer). Things quickly got WAY out of control and I ended up with all sorts of duplicated people and confused onlookers and imbalances. I've abandoned the idea for now as I couldn't see a way to force it to create a coherent storyline :)

On the connection between quantum mechanics and entropy:
I'm with Sean Caroll on this one ... I think it's a simple matter of "many worlds" (and his justification for many worlds will make you scoff at any other interpretation). When an interaction happens, the quantum states split according to the equations (this we know) and of course YOU happen to be in a RANDOM one of those resulting wave functions (worlds). This NATURALLY brings entropy because it's more likely for you to end up in a world with higher entropy by definition.
I could be mistaken, but wouldn't that require that there be a wildly non-uniform distribution of entropy among these wavefunctions? Entropy being what it is, I find this hard to imagine.

It will end up both opened and closed and the opened one will have a lot higher entropy. What is there in the physics that could prevent this uneven entropy distribution?

ΩThere are parallel world. There are so many perhaps an infinite number of them. They are set up in a grid manor. If you were to map them. There are alpha worlds such as earth and omega such as to be the end time where everything is far more technologically advanced and much farther along of development has been made on the planet where the parallel world is. Jesus called them the alpha and omega beginning and end. Omega by definition means the final development. These are heaven like worlds where they archived eternal life though advances and medical advances to stop dying. They are very much a paradise compared to our earth as it is now. The worlds stay parallel though a process I call 2015 witch is where one world merges many in from a main world. Then they all become the same. The master world as I call it or main world makes every other world parallel to it. So our world becomes there's, the master world. It is probably ran by machine and spies from a more advanced omega planet. I call it 2015 because I believe this process took place in 2015 in October or November of that year. As I remember seeing visions of this other person who was myself in another world at least 5 times while I was in jail in 2015. from October some time to January 5th 2016. Witch was the last time I seen one of the visions. This person shares all my same markings and looks and is like a twin of myself. Your parallel person is like a twin of yourself. And all of the items from the master world and when 2015 happens then becomes the items in this world, your items. They duplicate and transfer to here as I have seen this happen and take place right in front of my eyes. His belongings became mine. You can also be born by 2015 as I became him. I believe spies from another omega more developed planet initiate this to happen to our worlds. I herd them speak before inside my mind at multiple times in my life. I believe they use a life controlling machine to do this. Maybe all of life is controlled by machines. We are being recorded by these machine through our thoughts eyes deeds and ideas. We are all hooked to something in the mind and possibly in the body. Everything we do is being recorded though our eyes and thought. That's sorta how 2015 works because you are hooked to something and are also hooked to your parallel self. We are all being watched and recorded. I call this thing the machine. It filters things we do and think in life. As it is in control of life on earth and keeps things parallel and I believe this machine can allow certain events to take place on Earth. Basically we have something hooked to our brains and it control's all of life. It is a very evil machine. If you needed to meet someone or get a job ect. It can do such things but also is evil. It is also is as if mind control but is self automated and possibly controlled by spy people of these heavenly omega planets as well. Who can potentially alter it. But it is attached to the mind. I believe there could be other versions of earth where they have machines to view worlds and maybe even take action with these machines to even teleport travel to other worlds to go to new and different worlds. There are even earths without humans on them. Just like vegetation earths without human life. And the time is similar to ours. Time I believe is important because it is a factor to a parallel world. 2015 doesn't leave this galaxy. I believe 2015 could happen every so often just as solar eclipses do. Omega worlds may have no water. I believe the future of earth will have no water as to make room for as many humans to live here as possible. Water takes up a lot of space and if removed we will have a lot more room for a larger population witch is why I believe they remove the water. They use medications to live forever. They do not die by nature as we do today. The medical advances are so great they cannot die. So population as you can imagine becomes very very large! I believe they will have to do something to stop breeding. As some kind of mandated birth control. They are probably larger in size to us. Weight and height. I believe there body's to have more muscle definition. And are probably stronger. I believe they will not eat or drink but for pleasure they don't require food and water as we do. I believe they attach things to there body's. Devices such as our cellphones and apple watches they have devices hooked to them all the time as we do. They talk telepathically. You know how we have the iphone? There's is the mind phone. They can read minds of peoples of other worlds. As that is a desired way for them to communicate. They do not need sleep as there is no night there they are awake all the time. They have no need for the sun. They can rest but don't require it. and they can read minds they are so technologically advanced. even people from other planets. They also control the climate and temperature. Climate and temperature will be different then our current planet and life. They are so technologically advanced they can spy and see the parallel other worlds as well as different worlds past and present. They in omega earth will speak a similar and same languages. There is also parallel planets down a “eternal chain”. And when you die you travel down this eternal chain of planets. Witch are HIGHLY similar to our current earth time is also important and perhaps down this eternal chain they are similar to us in time. They can also travel to other worlds as well. Many people come to alpha earth because there are so many parallel earths that you are likely to come here with an infinite number of them. But probably majority will go to a omega planet as there population could be in the high to low trillions for a planet similar to this one and planets like it. And what if they increased the planets size? They can meet there parallel self's and there family and friends. Even study other worlds down this parallel chain witch will all be advancing at similar times and rates. They can even see and meet there past family members or friends. They can even see where they will live in the future like if they come to alpha or omega earth or other places like it. The worlds I believe will be wiped out so god can start a new and that's potentially how some get to alpha earth. But they can see themselves here as to look into there lives into the future. So I could be watching myself write this right now. Or where I will even be in the next life who my family will be where I will live what I will do for a living and such. This ability to see into someone’s life is there Facebook. Spying is there Facebook. They want to know what there family members and friends are up to. They have no paper money. Money will be attached to the persons hand at some point. They have no crime or jail. No or few wars with physical combat. Its a more perfect place. With no disease or suffering. There will be no wild animals. They no longer use electricity but new power sources. I have dreams and visions of this place. I know its real. Parallel worlds advance futuristic heaven like worlds eternal life.

The Time-Reversed Universe according to Janus model
The theory describes two sheets or parallel universes in CPT-symmetry interacting through gravity, both originating from the same initial singularity. In Janus model, four species of matter coexist:
1- positive mass matter (baryonic matter). Baryonic matter refers to all matter composed of elementary particles called baryons. C-symmetry reverses not only the sign of the electrical charge but also the other quantum charges qi including the baryonic number, but not the spin. ζ-symmetry is the translation into symplectic geometry of this C-symmetry between matter and Dirac's antimatter. ζ-symmetry, in the 5-dimensional evolution space used in the Janus model, causes symmetry C (called q-symmetry in Janus model) in the space of the moment.
Together with positive energy photons, these first two species are the components of the universe known until now: it is the first sheet of the universe (a.k.a. the positive sector).

3- the negative mass material (CPT-symmetry with respect to the first specie, with an anti-linear and anti-unit operator T ), which is not very abundant with respect to the fourth specie. CPT-symmetry simultaneously reverses quantum charges, parity (the spatial image seen in a mirror) and time.
4- Negative mass antimatter (PT-symmetry with respect to the first specie, with a linear and unitary operator T ). Using symplectic geometry, the Janus model demonstrates that this PT-symmetry is also a ζ-symmetry and a q-symmetry which automatically go together, so the quantum charges are also reversed.

Thank you for acknowledging that Feynman meant a literal reversal in time, this is something I have seen talked around from other enjoyers of physics as being a mathematical abstraction, e.g. the second version you give, but it's really not what Feynman meant, he meant it literally.
CPT symmetry implies antimatter is mater going backwards in time. This solves the existence of mater in our universe problem. At the big bang there was equal matter and antimatter but the antimatter went backwards in time so it couldn't interact with us and instead gave an antimatter antiuniverse expanding backwards. Of course, to us this is simply an unobservable big crunch.

Regarding string theory being science, Karl Popper is not the end all of the meaning of science, and falsifiability, while a strong and important feature in science, is far to narrow to describe what real scientists do. A large part of science, maybe the lion’s share, is really about just exploring, cataloguing, classifying. Even if String theory is eventually shown unprovable, or supplanted by something else, we still explored a promising passageway using principles of rational analysis rooted in empirical science. That sure sounds like science to me.

That's what you actually see in a mirror. This is also understandable if you have a 2D thing and you go around it - it is a mirror of itself but it is actually not a single reflection - it is a reflection in both the 2D direction you travelled around and the 3D direction. So it's a double reflection (which has the same effect as a rotation).

A comment on your dispute regarding the string theory. In my opinion, as long as the string theory can't be used to make testable predictions about physics, it's a mathematical tool, not a theory of the universe. The claim that universe can be explained through string theory is on similar level as claim that universe can be explained through mathematics. We may have good reasons to believe it's true but we don't don't know how to do that.
And it all honestly, it might be that even current mathematics as a whole is not the right tool to explain the universe.
What alternative do we have to maths though? Not being combative, genuinely curious. I see a lot of comments like these, but no one seems to have a workable (or even an unworkable) alternative.
We don't have such alternative, obviously. If there was a logically consistent construct where particles are the basic building stones as simple as 1+1=2, it would be considered part of mathematics anyway.

My only notion is that in such theory I'd expect the particles and their interactions to be the basic building blocks, not results of complex calculations. We have based our number theory on our macroscopic experience, we "know" that 1+1=2 because our experience tells us that there is such a thing as distinct objects that can be put together. But from the particles perspective, 1+1=2 almost doesn't make sense. I'd expect the "particle maths" to start there, at the actual beginning.

It doesn't, that's why he said the connection between entropy and quantum mechanics is still not well understood. A CPT-flipped universe should spontaneously decrease in entropy as it rewinds itself back to the big bang but that... feels wrong, so there's probably something we still don't understand here.

How many problems in theory are because of infinity problems? My question relates to the idea that some of these infinity problems could be nixed if we understood that there is a point of no more subdividability in time and matter. It appears there is a Planck length of time and a Planck length of matter. Why does this not make some of these infinity problems vaporize? Will someone please explain this to me? Thanks
What about the opposite end? Is there a maximum length or age? If not, infinities remain.
@@coopergates9680 I would offer that there is a difference between an infinity that takes infinite time to express itself (e.g. reaching the edge of the universe), and an infinite that "should" appear in finite time, if the math is correct (e.g. forming a singularity).
@@secularmonk5176 In pure math, sure, it's easy to verify if something diverges at one and only one number (singularity, such as division by zero), but you can't measure something infinitely small any more than you can compute (finitely many) digits of Pi, or try to construct an angle of 20/3 degrees by starting with a 60 degree angle and bisecting portions of it using the infinite binary expansion of 1/9.
Planck isn't the smallest possible. It's the smallest we can measure with our current understanding of physics without a theory of quantum gravity. Once we have a theory of quantum gravity we can go beyond Planck measurements.

Entropy is an emergent property of the universe based on... the universe being composed of a lot of particles. It's a statistical phenomenon, not a fundamental requirement of the universe. Entropy basically just says that the universe trends to the statistically most likely state of the universe. But it's technically always possible (just really, really, REALLY unlikely) for entropy to be violated.
EDIT: A law in science doesn't necessarily mean that the underlying physics REQUIRES that the thing be true. It's essentially a statement about OBSERVATION. A law means we always OBSERVE this property to hold. As such, we can call the 2nd law of thermodynamics a law, despite knowing that physics says it can, hypothetically (unlikely) be violated.
@Jeffrey Johnson Lol I get what you're saying, but in the long run, entropy always increases. Just like a few people in a casino might win some cash, but eventually, it's always the casino that wins. We're talking about the entire universe and its entire history. Allowing time to reverse would allow entropy to be reversed indefinitely throughout the universe. This certainly isn't possible as far as I know. But I guess I could be wrong.
As it sounded to me inversing T was just a reversal of Entropy. Atoms would grow instead of decay. Systems would become more ordered not less.
The clock example would also be difficult to even detect as the cobalt would be absorbing particles not releasing them. I suppose the sensor would register when IT emitted the particle towards the cobalt.

Entropy could theoretically be reversed in an ALTERNATE universe, where the laws of physics are reversed such that entropy being reversed _does_ make sense, and in their universe a universe where entropy that _isn't_ reversed doesn't make sense. In this universe, photons and neutrinos collide to make particles, and stars are where heavy elements are decayed into lighter ones, where an evenly dispersed field of something that spreads out is infinitely less likely than a concentrated point of that something. Of course it doesn't make sense in our universe, it is a _different_ universe. Theoretical, sure, but then, it works just like ours but backwards.

This is a very interesting show and I do enjoy seeing how far we are advancing in our knowledge of the working of the Universe and remember if we ever do get to the point of knowing all how uninteresting would the Universe become. I think it is fine for us to have to continue to struggle to understand and learn about our place in Space Time and that is even if we never get the answer to everything. I do look forward to learning a bit more with each one of your shows and the wonderful explanations you give. BTW I use to be against the idea of string theory but I have continued to go back to previous shows and I can agree even if not provable right now it is still theoretical science. All excepted science now started as theoretical science until it was proven and some of that proof took years and even centuries. Thank you for the increase in my understanding and please continue to inform and educate me.
